So it's $549 now … what happened to $299?

Oh I get it, the price was really … $299 + TAX.

XFX GTX 680 2GB

Retail MSRP............ $299
Nvidia fanboy tax … $250
------------------------------------
Total ....................... $549 :sneaky::D

Haha. If only XFX still made Nvidia cards...

Of course - at only 195W TDP, it'd have to be black magic for it to beat HD 7970 by like 30%. I think NV has something else under the sleeve.

Yes. Ben Skywalker had a rather amusing comment about this entire Nvidia PR onslaught
Consisting of an entire single sentence. Or was it two whole sentences?
;)
If I find it, I'll link it. It was rather funny the way he said it.

Yup, a $299 card that beats a 580 is vaporware. I guess did anyone really expect to get better than 580 performance for $299? ;)

Only the kool-aid drinking true believers. Even many nVidia fans were pretty quick to dismiss that performance/price to be unreasonable. Just because someone is an nVidia/AMD fan doesn't mean that their brains stop functioning.

I'm not completely positive if the benches that BoFox posted are correct, but even Charlie said that nVidia's architecture was better this time around so I don't find the results surprising. I suppose that we'll know for a certainty in a few weeks.

Some of you guys take this [stuff] waaaay too seriously. It's just a piece of sand melted into shapes made by companies that only care about your money. Calm down everybody. Calm down.

Ties and beats with OCing isn't unreasonable for a node change. If/when 7870 hits $300 we will have just that. Do I expect NVIDIA to be aggressive on pricing even when they are launching several months behind? I am not expecting such behavior from a marketing driven company.

If these rumors are true, I am impressed with the leap in efficiency NVIDIA will be delivering. Very interested in a 7970/680 head to head. Did NVIDIA trim GPGPU? If so, I would expect the big die Kepler tailored for GPGPU.

Fake and [redacted].

In the future it's best if you keep your opinions on the sexual orientation of video cards to yourself.

LOL i am sorry,i was having a little laugh cause we get these nice pictures but not even any reviews previews or real time die shots....forgive me for being skeptical,i have used photoshop before, its a incredible tool.

Mid range performance for $550. I'll pass. Small die and 2gb? This was a mid range card from day 1. Anyone that says otherwise is a fool.
Like they say.. A fool and his money soon part.

I wonder if anyone would acknowledge that because of the gk104
name, that people thought this would be a mid range card with a mid range price?
Im pretty sure you all k.ow that is where the lower pricetag comes into play. And the lackluster performance of 7970 gave some the idea, or the hope that a lower priced mid ranged nvidia card could best it.
Alas, it all gets twisted in the end doesn't it.

It's funny how people try to discredit Charlie, when he was one of the first, if not the first, to say that GK104 would be released as 680. People were saying he would be wrong, or he was dead wrong.

Now it looks like it is the 680.

Second, he also wrote an article claiming that GK104 would beat Tahiti on "every measurable metric". This probably covers die size, power draw, performance per mm.

Now it looks like he was right.

Third, he said 680 this week. Maybe Nvidia pulled back on the paper launch by a week?

He was wrong on that.

Two out of three ain't bad. He's in the business of unofficial news. I would say that was not a bad run.

Looking at those benches which we can safely knock 5-10% off for nvidia pr exaggeration, the 680 is really lackluster using your logic. Less of an improvement over the 580 than the 7970 was over the 6970. And $550 as well? Go premiums!

Now just for the OVERCLOCKABILITY... 10% is whoopty doopty, but if it's already maxed out on the clocks then the 30% OC will make the 7970 a better choice. If it's not maxed out it'll be a toss up and can be considered for other features (eyefinity/3dvision etc.)

IN before the lock.

So $550 for a slower 7970 was great but now a faster 680 is lackluster?

If it overclocks just as good or better you'll say well it's only 10% faster stock.
These gpu "discussions" are really a waste of time because the metrics are always changing.

Based on the rumoured die size and 1000 core, 7970 probably has some more headroom as well as having equal to better IPC. Looks like it is going to be a 7970, nvidia edition :sneaky:

Benchmarks? These were both on chiphell a long time ago. I love how it starts at .8, LOL.

I demand you find this. I haven't seen a post by the Skywalker in some time, of course I probably just missed it :)

These gpu "discussions" are really a waste of time because the metrics are always changing.

They're also a waste of time when half of the discussion is dominated by people loyal to a brand, performance be damned. Can't argue logic with fanboys.
