What are the other reasons?

Edit: After reading, that sounds like such a waste of material and money. Why would they do that?

I think this is more of a "Another reason to hate America". Not that I hate America or anything, but we are so freakin' wasteful in this country. We throw out everything!
 
I don't see anything wrong with it. If I can pick this up at my nearest rental store for couple dollars and not worry about returning it then its just awesome. Who wants to watch a movie they rented past 2 days anyway.

And if this catches on, can you imagine the number of coasters we'll have? It will dwarf all of those wasted AOL discs.
 
DIVX was junk because it required you to get online (or didn't it?).

I think this is a good idea if I can rent it for 2-3 dollars and throw it away 🙂.
Hell they can put them in wending machines in your apartment complex or at work.

Why can't they be recycled ?
Oh and did you the consider the amount of gas people waste for returning rental movies ? I would rather recycle than waste gas by driving down just to return the movies.
 
i bet if you took it out of the package and coated the disc with some sort of varnish or laquer or whatever, it'd stop the oxidation process and keep the disc fresh.

The original post was about the technology, not that Disney chose to use it. This Yahoo article is barely two hours old!

And I'm in the same boat as those who think this scheme is environmentally unsound. The novelty of the idea is great but I'd only use it if CD recycling was more widespread.

The rental industry is based on a low price for limited use - Now instead of renting the DVD/VHS & returning it 5 days later you buy a $3 disc that can be kept indefinitely until you feel like watching it. When you open it you have 48 hours, then it's useless.

I fail to see the problem.

My point exactly. Not all of us are trying to rip DVD's. I couldn't care less as long as they last 2-3 days and are cheap enough with no loss in quality.
 
well when you think about we live in a highly disposable ready society why not disposable disks-but the real reason may be cheaper price???
 
as a enviormental science major.. i wonder if disney is taking any things to recycle these discs...
cause theya re going to be useless after opening them... I mean ppl are going to throw them away and then it will end up in landfills.

Corporations should take some sort of enviromental responsiblity.. not just for pure profit.

If disney comes out with this.. or who ever comes out with this.. I will make sure I do not give my money to these planet robbing greedy companies.
