WARNING: Alan Wallace of Panda Security told me that Titanium has a better anti-virus engine than Platinum. And check it out, the latest updates of Platinum miss two viruses..whereas Titanium got them all. Is that anyone else's experience?

ya know... I was thinking that this is most likely the best "free" AVS (granted for IT pro's) and if it missed 2, thats better than only finding two like that POS eTrust AV. blah!

I have a new archive you can download that has one extra virus (BAT.Delete). It's really stupid, nothing but a script that does del \windows\*.* or something like that. Bitdefender caught it, Panda didn't...but that's not really a huge deal.

Any way you can make seperate links to the file? Because Panda just takes the whole zip file and wipes it upon finding one of the virii, so I don't even know if it's effective at taking out 1 or all 7 (or 8)...

turn off auto scanning then unzip it?

I received clarification from Alan. He says that the Platinum engine doesn't check itself for problems like the Titanium one does, and Platinum won't check for operating system patches like Titanium.. that's about it. They should both detect the same viruses, so I don't understand why Platinum is not catching the same ones Titanium is.

I'm running Panda Titanium (2.05.05, defs updated 2-19-04) and it missed Backdoor.ServU.B and Virtool.Hiddenrun.B. Why did mine fail and others' didn't?

Panda Platnium Internet Security (8.01.00) with defs 2.19.04 caught everything. But it's a trial version and it'll stop working in a few days... I don't need the extra features like anti spam etc (plus I have zonealarm pro as the firewall), so I would stick with the AV just for now.

But now the question is - Platnium or Titanium?

Make sure your Titanium software is upgraded. I'm running 3.00.00.

Man, I'm pretty disappointed with Panda's support. I paid for their product and I haven't received responses to my tech support emails yet.

Okay, I'm switching to Titanium now. Good thing I was just using the trial version of Platinum. Thanks for the info.

Hehe, yeah.. NOD32 is a joke. Sure it only protects against viruses (not trojans), but so what?? Most of the threats out there these days are trojans and worms!

I disagree, respectfully. Eset recommends using NOD32 in conjunction with anti-Trojan software. NOD32 happens to be an excellent AV utility, especially for use on systems with limited power that would be bogged down by something like NAV.

I do recommend Panda Titanium for folks whose systems will run it, but try running that software (or worse yet, NAV) on a Transmeta Crusoe powered subnotebook some time! ;)

NOD32 is anti-virus only, however nowadays you need software that catches everything from viruses to worms,if you look at VB(Virus Bulletin) here you see NOD32 does very well, has one of the highest passes of any AV software, now if you look at Panda here it shows 1 out of 3 so not so good.

I sometimes wonder if these sorts of test are actually any good when it comes to choosing anti-virus software, who`s to say what AV software is the best?

I wouldn't rely on VB's ratings. It's like MCSE: just because you get your MCSE doesn't really mean you're awesome or know what you're doing. Panda has chosen for some reason to not submit to the VB tests lately..not sure why. But I don't need VB100% approval ratings to prove to me which software is the most solid. The whole purpose of this test I did was to cut through all the BS and VB100% crap and biased magazine reviews (which usually say that Norton is so great). Toss a bunch of viruses/trojans at the application and see how it handles it.

NOD32 might be fine for anti-virus, but it's a reality that most of the attacks we see these days are from trojans and worms. When's the last time a virus spread and caused a ruckus??

I was actually talking about VB results being pointless not yours ;).

I just used McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 7.0.0
Virus Def: 4326
Scan Engine: 4.3.20

On the one that had 7 viruses it only caught 5. Missing the 2 Backdoor ServU ones.
When I tried running them It automatically caught them and moved them into quarentine.

On the 8 virus file this time it caught 7 including the 2Serv U and the others except for the New exe that was added.
I wasn't about to double click on that one.

I still haven't received an email from Panda and I can download the updates....so..........

No you need to wait for Panda to issue you a user name and password. Usually it takes a day before you receive it. I just got a sales email from Panda offering Titanium 2004 for 29.99 with a full year of updates.

That shows as the most current version for me. I might still be running 2003 though? Damn I don't want to spend $$ to upgrade right now.
