From here:
Best of all, the medications create such a comfortable experience that most patients do not remember the visit; it is as if they slept through the treatment.
Hm, this sounds interesting...

I've gone awhile without a dentist visit, first mainly because college sapped away a lot of money, and, you know, because dentist visits typically go hand-in-hand with sharp objects jabbing my gums, pain, and the constant taste of blood.
Now I'm also concerned that they'd find expensive things that should get taken care of. Some of my teeth hurt from exposure to hot/cold, and oddly, some kinds of candy, though it doesn't seem to be sugar itself. I don't know if that's common, or what might be causing it.

But yeah, my dentist experiences haven't ever been much fun. Orthodontist visits weren't much good either, as brace adjustments meant a week or two of a constant, throbbing headache - and the braces themselves caused what was basically one large line of an ulcer. Those things hurt like hell when they're small.

I did sedation dentistry to have some teeth removed. It is really the best way for people that don't like the idea of seeing a dentist. Dentist was super cool about it. I went in the room sat in the chair, he came in carrying a radio playing some rock and he was wearing one of those surgical caps with pictures of weed on it, asked me if I was ready to get this party started , I told him ready when you are, he said alright lets get you on the jefferson airplane, see you soon. That was all I remember till the nurse was telling me to wake up that it was all over. The guy was in his 50's but one of the coolest dentist I ever met.

I think it was his whole attitude that helped. He wasn't all serious and quiet like many dentist I have met.

Wow, I like my dentist to be friendly...but that's a little extreme.

My wife has a terrible fear of the dentist...something about a horrible one when she was a kid.
About 15 years ago, the new dentist we ended up with after ours retired offered her "the blue pill" to sedate her. Halcyon was the trade name. Knocked her more or less out. (she came to a couple of times and cussed the dentist...then went back out.)
After she was done, she was still heavily sedated, so we couldn't leave for a couple of hours while they monitored her. She was funny as hell. Said some very funny things.

Me, I'm a pussy. I gotta have lots of novacaine (or whatever *caine they are using) Takes quite a bit for them to "numb me" but once I'm there, as long as the dentist has a large bottle of NO2, I'm good to go. He can take my entire mouth out to work on things...I don't care while I'm gassed.

I don't mean to scare you, but check if your butt hurts when you wake up.

Yup when I got my 4 wisdoms pulled. Nothing to it. Actually I think I was on Nitrous as it was a gas and not an injection. However because of my own anxiety about the issue they also have me 2 Valium to take a few hours before this. I really don't remember much about that day. If you are scared of the dentist then it's seriously probably the best and easiest thing you could do. You won't remember much and it will be over before you know it.

I think sedation dentistry would be ideal for you, OP. Go for it.

I used to have a tremdendous fear of denists and used nitrous for almost every visit, but over time, just got less & less worried about what the worst might be.

Had a root canal a couple years ago and thought I would freak. I worried myself so bad I was actually surprised at how much of a non-issue it really was. (Like a longer version of a cavity w/ a crown.) Mediocre throbbing later. Took a few motrin & went to bed. Next day was doing well & a day later was totally normal again.

Go for it! You'll feel so much better getting it done!!!

I've had a history of dental nightmares, so I've been to the dentist WAY more than the average person has (probably). I still don't hate it any less. I've been fully-sedated for two procedures, and partially-sedated for countless tooth-pullings.

General anesthesia is awesome. When I had my first procedure (cyst removal + tooth pull) the dentist stuck me with an IV, put the mask on, and told me to count backwards from 100. I made it to 95. The sensation was that I was asleep for no more than a few seconds, when in reality is more like an hour.

The second time I had general anesthesia was when I got my wisdom teeth out. Same deal as last time, except the anesthesia was delivered via the IV.

You might experience some sickness after the procedure, but it's only happened to me once (wisdom teeth procedure). The worst part of the whole ordeal is after the procedure when they're trying to bring you out of your drug-induced mini-coma. Remember that time you got so drunk that you had to hold on to the ceiling to keep from falling off the Earth? Sort of like that, but worse.

My dentist said last summer to get an oral surgeon to get my wisdom teeth out. He said just get knocked out, get all four out and be done with it. I think I'll just do that.

I don't want to sit there awake, even with localized anesthetic, as they rip out not just one or two but four freaking teeth. Almost hurts to think about it, and I've never had any problems going to the test for work like fillings.

Yeah I am probably going to do the same thing. Normal dental work doesn't fear me, but getting 4 teeth ripped out while I'm awake is a bit over the top.

I was knocked out when they pulled my wisdom teeth.....best 20 minutes of sleep in my life. If I could afford it that is the ONLY way I would have dental work done.

Ohh man the "Twilight Sleep" when I had my wisdom teeth taken out. I remember "Count back from ten" and I said "ten" the next thing I know my mouth hurts and I am 45 minutes into a 1.5hr drive home.

Awesome stuff.

I'm going to have to get this done. I have a fear of dentists (really bad experience as a kid) so it's been more time than I'd like to admit since I've been to the dentist. I know I need to go, so this sounds like the best option for me.

Yep, I made it to 9 however. Skip forward to waking up in the recovery room with a numb mouth.

I've had teeth extracted with just a local before, never again.

The worst part about having a tooth pulled is the needle that numbs you. But after that you will not feel a thing. And there is always some nitrous or you could ask the dentist for some lortabs before he starts.
