I need some serious dental work done and I'm considering sedation dentistry for it. My fear of the dentist is so irrational it's stoopid. So after years of neglect and wife nagging I realize I gotta do something or I'll be putting my teeth in a glass when I go to bed.

Any of you ever have sedation dentistry done? How did it go for you?

do whatever you need to to get into the dentist chair
i have had a lot of dental work , multiple crowns, one 4 tooth bridge, several root canals

it just gets worse putting it off, if you need to get knocked out , then do it

My uncle avoided the dentist for years, and only goes with sedation. Works for him I guess.

I was sedated for my 4 wisdom teeth. I enjoyed it much more then being awake when i had teeth pulled. Dentists suck.

Just make sure you remember if you had your shirt tucked in or not before they put you under.

I freaked out the nurse when they did a root canal on me without any pain reliever. She kept asking if I was okay, kept nodding.

I was going to get my wisdom teeth pulled while put under, but then I found out I had hypothyroidism and probably would have went into a coma if I did... Waiting for treatment to fully take effect so I can get it done.

I was knocked out when I had my wisdom teeth removed (~10 years ago). That was fine. I really need to get to the dentist again, I haven't for *cough* awhile. I know I will need a lot of work, if it's enough I would want to get knocked out again.

ugh

my jaw is apparently so insanely sensitive, that surface drilling with a full shot of Novocaine in my mouth makes me start trying to plot an escape plan that might or might not result in dental tools injuring everyone in the building, depending on the ease of escape and the number of teeth victimized by said tools.

I need to schedule a cleaning but don't want to put up with the news that I find out, for I know some work is going to need to be done, likely quite a bit. It doesn't help my teeth are cavity prone (it can be a genetic trait, just something in the structure and the saliva production/composition).

Main thing, need to find if any dentists in the region - that are covered by our insurance - can perform sedation dentistry. I know one in the region does, but have to find out about the insurance.

So I discovered that it appears a local dentist office offers sedation dentistry, and is covered by insurance (local to hometown).

Here is a quote about the sedation:

You are given a small pill to take an hour prior to your dental appointment. Your companion will accompany you to the office. By the time you arrive you will be very drowsy.

When you arrive in our office, you will be escorted into the comfort room, covered with a thick, warm blanket and placed on a monitor to watch your vital signs. After you are comfortable Dr. Huntzinger and the experienced clinical team at Dental Health Associates will take care of your dental needs.

When your treatment is completed your companion will return you home to finish your comfortable, relaxing day.

Anyone have any idea WHAT they give you? Something that doesn't knock you out unconscious but is a pill that will put you into a world where you feel and possibly experience nothing in the surrounding environment? This is intriguing. Or, do I not want to know and just go and sign up for this with complete positive excitement that I'll be oblivious but able to think up some crazy shit while they do stuff that would normally have me kicking and screaming my way home?

I played dental assistant for a few years. At our office we never did any type of sedation. Just topical and local anesthetics. I find it fascinating how scared people are of this.

I assisted with a guy who had EVERY tooth removed from his mouth with just local anesthetic. Didn't fuss or anything. The blood and gore in his mouth was interesting. Flabby skin floating around in blood. I never did understand where all of the kick marks on the door came from that where there since before I worked there.

I love the sound of a giant ~CRACK~ when a tooth shatters.

It's really not that bad OP. It never harmed me any. Except those patients getting root canals.. man.. hell on earth.

You should go in to get some x-rays first and a cleaning. They typically won't fill your cavity right then, so you'll have to go back in later. Also, they may not be able to do all the work in one visit depending on where the cavities are.

Man... I enjoy going to the dentist. I love the feeling of clean teeth. I've had one small decay spot and one slightly chipped tooth in the last ten years. My dentist is great, I trust him, and I know that he won't do anything to hurt me.

No, I had the x-rays and inspection today. They wanted to do a cleaning but I freaked out. My heart rate was like 1,000 beats/min and I almost threw up on the hygienist while she was simply poking around. My teeth are in bad shape, but oddly enough don't hurt. Even while she was poking around. But still, even now just thinking about it while I type my hands are starting to shake and I'm sweating. Some people fear spiders/heights/small spaces... I FEAR the dentist. It's an indescribable, completely irrational, totally baby-like FEAR of dental work.

I did sedation dentistry to have some teeth removed. It is really the best way for people that don't like the idea of seeing a dentist. Dentist was super cool about it. I went in the room sat in the chair, he came in carrying a radio playing some rock and he was wearing one of those surgical caps with pictures of weed on it, asked me if I was ready to get this party started , I told him ready when you are, he said alright lets get you on the jefferson airplane, see you soon. That was all I remember till the nurse was telling me to wake up that it was all over. The guy was in his 50's but one of the coolest dentist I ever met.

I think it was his whole attitude that helped. He wasn't all serious and quiet like many dentist I have met.

I had my 4 wisdom teeth pulled. It was the first real dental work beyond regular cleaning, and I got knocked the F* out. It was great.

IV in the top of the hand. The assistant was like "your genitals might itch here for a minute.." As I was thinking 'WTF?' I passed out. Woke up about 35 minutes later, all done!

I think I kinda woke up once or twice during the procedure, just enough to see shapes moving in front of me. But that was it.

Edit: haha, just read the link in the post before mine, how appropriate...
