Screw US Customs

Background Info: I'm a half-East Indian half english citizen of Canada, and my East Indian side of my family has probably been in North America for longer than most of you guys. I'm 5th generation

Here's a slight rant:

Post 9/11 I've been subjected to some pretty ludicris ******, though given what happened to you guys I can't really blame the precautions, I'll even take the blatant 'random testing' of brown people, hell all except for two of the Islamic people I know are religious crazies.

But I'm getting pretty sick of this ******. I don't wear a turban, I have no Koran, I go to temple maybe once or twice a year for weddings or funerals, my dad is a non-practicing Sikh and I'm nothing (my mom is Anglican).

My first encounter with US Customs was 3 years ago in High School, I was crossing the border with my school for a Model United Nations trip, when I went through customs in Montreal. I gave the guy my customs declaration form, but it was upside down, the customs officer told me to turn it over. I quickly grap it with my hand and flop it over with my palm. The customs officer looks me straight in the eye and says 'Why did you do that?', with a puzzled look on my face I say 'Do what?'.. he says 'Flip over the form like that?'.. followed by more comments by me like 'I have no idea what your talking about..'

In a thick drawl the guy goes 'I don't give a damn who the hell you are, it's my job to keep people like you (by that he meant brown people) out of my country'. At which point I shut up because my teacher told me to just let it go (I have a very explosive temper).

That was my first encounter.

My second encounter (amongst other minor encounters) was today. I was crossing at the pacific border crossing just south of Vancouver to go to Roche Harbour for my grandpa's 70th birthday.

I'm visiting my caucasian side of my family. My passport is currently in a box being shipped back from college because I'm home for the summer, and my birth certificate is with it. As a result I bring my drivers license, federally issued Social Insurance Card, BC Health Card, and my photo student ID (Provincially Issued).. hoping that it will be okay.

My brother was coming with me and we have the same home address' and he brought his passport so I thought we would be okay.

After waiting for 40 minutes to cross we finally get up and some dumb FOB tells me that my 4 pieces of ID aren't good enough and he needs a birth certificate, at which point I tell him to look at my brothers passport, our home address and last names are the same and we look almost identical. We tell him our mom went down yesterday and give him her name (he brings her file up on the computer and sees a white woman)... at which point he looks at us funny because my mom is white.

Yes douchebag, my mom is white, my parents are in a mixed marraige, not all of us are backwards and xenophobic like you, you piece of ******. Of course I didn't say this to his face.

He starts getting all angry at me, and starts asking some personal questions, where I'm from, where I go to school, what I'm studying, what my summer job is, what year of university I'm in. Total bullshit stuff, at which point I tell him to slow down because I'm getting a bit nervous, the guy is trying to light a fire under my ass.

This of course is in front of my little brother.

Finally the prick lets me through. I get to Bellingham Airport and fly for half an hour to meet up with my caucasian family members who brought down their 3 boats.

When I arrive I hear about their terrible experience with US Customs.

The fat white lady wouldn't let my uncle in, because he, like me, couldn't get his passport and only had his DL, and SIN card. She treated him like ****** till he told her he was a pallative physician and to stop giving him ****** because is stressed out from dealing with people that have terminal cancer and that she should shut the ****** up and annoy someone else.

Of course, I've never seen my uncle lose his temper, after dealing with people in pallative care for so long he's become pretty somber.

My other uncle got the same ol bit too.

****** Customs.

Cliffnotes:

Read the ****** post.

P.S. My family has a place in Hawaii and we bring our title of ownership with us every trip ( we go down once or twice a year for the past 15 years and they give us garbage everytime )

Customs check for contraband and illegal items. I think it was INS? (even though yeah they're all rolled into one huge nasty Dept of Homeland Security

Sorry for what happened, but its a sad fact that many of the people from your culture will have to face. Look at how the japanese were ridiculed back in World War II. You can't have security and your freedom and not be stereotyped / prejudiced against and have your cake too.

****** you whitey/fobbie/blackie (insert stereotypical racist name) how'd you like to go to the middle east/asia/africa and be racially profiled?

4 pieces of ID should be enough to avoid interrogation.

I'm white, and although the Canadians let me cross the Pacific border with just my drivers license, when I came back I did have to go inside for a brief interview and explaination as to why I didn't have more docs with me, what I did, what I was doing, where I worked, where I got my degree, where I lived, etc etc and why I was in Canada for only 4 hours.

I think you're being over sensitive and are trying to pull the race card when you really don't need to.

Sounds to me like the op understood the precautions, but didn't appreciate the lack of professionalism.

I think I've been pretty patient with everyone, when I tell them I have a white mother they all kinda look at me and go 'really?'

We're not all backwards buffoons.

Not to mention my skin color was explicitly addressed in the first incident, otherwise I'd just be pissed off about how big of a pain in the ass crossing the border is.

There is a difference.

I'm not gonna turn this into a P&N thread.

what did you expect, the president isn't very professional himself!
no seriously, if you understand the precautions, you know you will face these types of thinking and attitude. you can't expect ALL of them to nicely greet you, ask you for your ID, takes a while to check your paperwork, while the whites and blacks are parading past the checkpoint. you'd be just as pissed too, and they you'd complain they're patronizing you when they talk too nicely.

my point is, things like this will always happen. learn to accept it, instead of getting way too worked up in it. anger doesn't solve problems.

If it makes you feel any better, I've been racially/nationally/ethnically profilled a few times. Serbia and Burma are prime examples.

You want to cross the border easily? Take their attitude for a few minutes and go on with your life. Smile and don't argue. If I got all wound up at every border crossing I'd go nuts. I've had problems getting into France before simply because I asked them to stamp my passport. I've had problems getting into the USA because my jackass of a drunk friend was yelling that he had hand grenades. A smile and not being argumentative will get you a long way.

Why? It makes things more efficient. Life isn't fair.

Fine, so I hope your ass gets racially profiled in the Middle East. The problem there is that they aren't as 'refined' as the rest of us 'over here'.

Over there racial profiling comes with a whip, a bullet, or a frag grenade unfortunately. As a person of eastern descent I do NOT condone terrorism at all.

But do unto others as they do unto you, and it's a vicious cycle.

The problem is not once have I nicely been greeted, and not once have I not had problems.

It does? 😕

yes it does. seriously why would you bother to check a 80 year old grandma for explosives when it's statistically impossible that they are terrorists? (i'm not going to say who you should check,. thats for a P&N thread) so okay, if one day a 80 year old white woman decides to blow herself up in front of some building, then you bet your ass that they will start being checked as well.

I understand that there is a reactive measure to it all, and I understand that no one can be go unchecked if they fit the broad stereotype of a terrorist. I understand that with my skin color comes a stigma.

It's just annoying when a dumbass FOB tells me I can't be here, or some inbred hick with a thick southern drawl.

My family has been here for ages, we've all worked hard, accumulated much, and I get yelled at by some stupid FOB thats been here for 10 years?

just a word of friendly advice, no matter how you are treated verbally, remember to be patient and do not raise your tone with them, they can really f you over by putting your name into the blacklist. my ex-boss had a very common name, once he came back for business and he was told that his name was flagged as a wanted drug criminal. procedure required them to check him regardless what he looked like, who he traveled with, where he went, etc. if you want a full body cavity search complemented with nasty attidudes, then yeah go ahead and yell at them. if i were you, i would just keep everything to myself, and vent on boards like these or myspace or blogs as you have been doing.

again its tragic what happens around the world, but its a known fact that life is not fair.

The worst part is that you're letting some "inbred hick with a thick southern drawl" get to you.

Let it go. There are a-holes everywhere.

This is no different than complaining about a bad waiter or bartender as far as I'm concerned. "Oh no, he served the white girl a drink first. He keeps ignorning me."

But each time you know they feel like shvt for being so mean to a non-terrorist. You get the last laugh.

That sucks dude. Racial profiling is just wrong, but to be expected in the land of the intolerant redneck.

Yeah because we all know the Canadian border in North of Seattle is full of rednecks.

Do any of you guys see the hypocracy here?

The "land of the intollerant redneck"? You complain about profiling and then make a statement like that?
