i can't believe no one has mentioned this point again. The customs folks, not just US, ask questions in a threatening way to increase stress on you. so perhaps if you're lying you say something wrong, get nervous, etc. this has been a law enforcement tactic for a long long time.

and when you, get frustrated, you look suspicious. you;re angry, and feel mistreated, and which means you would probably like to hurt them. that fits the profile of a terrorist, someone who would like to take down authority.

you have to go in with the feeling they're just doing their job and do what they say, rather than go in with a chip on your shoulder.

also, your brother easily got in and you didn't mention any harrassment to him...

Because his little brother knew the requirements and planned ahead. Getting through customs is easy if you just follow the rules and bring what is required.

I am honestly pissed off they let you in at all.

In my mind, if you don't have the required documents then no admittance.

Working US Customs is Frustrating
Border crossers are total dicks

So I was working a station at the pacific border crossing just south of Vancouver when some kid comes through the line with every form of identification EXCEPT any of the ones we specifically require. We need a birth certificate or a passport, but this guy presents his driver's license, health insurance card, student ID, fishing license, and library card.

I explain that we need one of the two aforementioned forms of identification, and he goes into some rage about how he's being profiled because he's brown. His brother actually had the proper identification so, naturally, he was allowed through. I tried to reason that if I was racially profiling, his brother would be having a difficult time, too. Instead of keying in to this valid point, he instead demands that he be allowed to use his brother's ID since they have the same address.

Are you kidding me, Mohammad?

I try to explain to the kid that EVERYONE needs THEIR OWN identification, but he just gets more and more pissed off (I think he had real temper issues).

In a last-ditch effort, he starts rambling about how his mom is white and is in a mixed marriage and he's not a xenophobic something-or-other like I am.

I don't know what that last bit was all about, but I told him to get back in his Volkswagon with the other 11 illegal Mexicans he tried to border-hop with and go back to Canada.

YOU ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE PHOTO ID AND A PASSPORT OR A BIRTH CERTIFICATE.

How is this a surprise? Get over it you moron. He did his job (actually, he didn't since he let you in anyway.)

I don't think this is true. It's going to be true real soon but as of right now that law hasn't gone into effect has it? I always have my passport but I thought you could still get across with a driver's license.

You can get across with a driver's license, but you also need a birth certificate as well.

Having your brother's photo ID does not count.

My wife is from the Philippines. Before she became a naturalized US Citizen, she crossed the border (at the airports) three times using her green card and Filipino passport. She didn't have any issues.

My guess? The OP didn't follow the rules, and got upset when he got told "no".

I've little sympathy for the OP given his attitude.

The rest of us who are US Citizens (or legal immigrants) shouldn't think of him too harshly, though. We Americans can be a pretty selfish lot too, sometimes.

Apparently, claiming to have a white mother isn't enough either.

Getting through customs is so hard these days.
