I've had problems getting into France before simply because I asked them to stamp my passport.
hahaha, the Canadian immigration guy at Niagra Falls looked at me like I was crazy when I asked him to stamp my gf's US passport, told me she didn't need one. I had to explain to him that she wanted a stamp in her passport since she didn't have any from other countries (depending on what country you land in in the EU, they really don't stamp anymore so the only one she had was from US and the Czech). He was kind of shaking his head while he stamped hers, probably thought we were a bunch of crazy stupid Americans
😀
I love the INS:beer: One time I got in an argument about my greencard while I was flying back into San Francisco, he asked why I hadn't gotten a new greencard since I was like 10 when I got it and obviously looked a lot different. Since I knew I wasn't required to get a new one for another 2years, I told him so and he actually sent me to the main office:Q Had to wait like 20min until a supervisor came out and told me that I was right but said next time don't argue with the INS official. Told her that if she didn't want her time wasted, maybe she should make sure that the people she was supervising actually knew what they were talking about. She just gave me a dirty look and said she would make sure of it. Lesson learned, even though I no that they are wrong I usually keep my mouth shut (yessir massa boss)
Then there was the time when I was about 12, flying into San Fransisco with my mom (greencard) and sister (citizen). The immigrations guy started asking all these questions about why we had greencards (dad's job had us living in the US for a bunch of years), who paid for my sister's birth (dad's insurance), blah blah blah. Then he started saying how it was illegal or something since we (my sister and I) didn't "talk" English (yes, he did actually did say talk English), etc etc. At which point I said informed him that we both "speak" English very well, it was just that we were brought up NOT to start yapping away at every oppurtunity, especially when adults we talking. He just shut up and quickly stamped us through. My mom was definately not happy about that one, I think I was grounded for a while.
What do you expect, the INS is like any other government beauracracy. Sure there are good knowledgable people but there are a lot of incompetant people too. Just don't let it get to you. Smile, nod, and say yes sir.
OP: you really didn't have anything to prove that you were a legally able to stay in the US so what did you expect? You don't have to be a citizen to legally get those documents that you had (though really to this day don't understand why a birth certificate is considered proof of citizenship, you could have just as well renounced it)
