man that letter from the ex-wife/kids is a dagger.
Can't say I blame her. He chose drugs over his wife and family... that's fucked up.

Mental illness and addiction can be a bitch that way... you make it sound like it was as simple of a decision as whether you want to have steak or chicken for lunch. Can't say I blame her. He chose drugs over his wife and family... that's fucked up.
I find it interesting how intertwined drug use/abuse and artistry are tied together. It isn't something new by a long shot.
How many great artists fought the demons of addiction? Is it that the personality that attracts artistic expression also attracts drug use or is it that drugs lay bare the raw nerves that allow for such great expression.
I think of bands that I like where members have come through out of drug addiction and in every case I can think of the music where drug use was highest is the best music they've put out.
To some extent it feels like mind altering drugs are the steroids of the art world. We shouldn't encourage it but we can't deny that it produces results that we enjoy. As someone who loves music it gives me a bit of a sick feeling to think of it in those terms.
