Scott Walker ‘punts’ on evolution question

The Republican governor, during a question-and-answer session after a speech in London, where he is on a four-day trade mission, was asked whether he believes in or accepts evolution. “For me, I’m going to punt on that one as well,” Walker said. “That’s a question a politician shouldn’t be involved in one way or another. So, I’m going to leave that up to you.

He later released this statement or should I say a staffer attempted to clean it up.
In a statement to POLITICO later Wednesday, Walker said: “Both science and my faith dictate my belief that we are created by God. I believe faith and science are compatible, and go hand in hand.”

Question: Is this how GOP candidates are going to deal with issues of science? Does this mean Republicans will punt on issues of science and leave it up to others? Maybe that's a good idea.

I feel like this is the Republican equivalent of Obama refusing to come out and support gay marriage in 2008.

While I think not accepting evolution is crazy, I don't really care what politicians say about it so long as they aren't trying to undermine the teaching of evolution in the classroom.

But yes, he's probably pandering for the primary.

Yay! We're back in the dark ages, where scientists were demonic beings and only the church had the true answer to all of life's great mysteries!
Hooray for societal devolution!

Always ask do you believe in human evolution from lower primates, because many people would say yes to evolution but in their minds they make an exception to mankind, and would appear to believe in evolution 100%.

I think it would be hard to be a politician in an area where some of your constituents could get in a tizzy over evolution, but you still need to maintain that you aren't a nut job at the state capital.

Maybe it's high time we stop pandering to nut jobs.

If those nut jobs put you in office, you need them for the next election. That's the "beauty" of the American political system. Land of the people for better or worse.

I can agree with him there.

While I can agree with you in the ideal, evolution has become a very contested idea in politics, with reality denying CBDs everywhere trying to get creationism of an equal footing, so it has become very important to know where a politician stands on that issue. Any politician who doesn't understand the factual nature of evolution is too motivationally blind to represent people objectively and should not acquire a political office. The future survival of the human race is going to require real knowledge, not the altered reality bull shit conservatives live in. Human survival is under assault from the right. It's a brain defect they don't want cured.

I feel like this is the republican equivalent of a logical comparison.

It's what the CBD does, immediately check ones cow for any sign of ones favorite outrage gores and create a false equivalency.

He answered it exactly the way he should answer it. Stupid question. I don't care what he personally believes in or doesn't believe in. As long as he doesn't try to push some religious crap as "science" in schools, I'm good.

You don't think it is important for our leaders to be able to think critically and/or not pander to people who can't?

If we had elected leaders who could "think critically", we wouldn't have half the mess we have today. Obviously that has not happened, the "leaders" we have are a reflection of our collective stupidity.

I don't care what his personal beliefs are, so long as he doesn't try and impose them onto everyone through the public school system.

I submit to you asking candidates questions about their religion is more stupid since they are running for a secular office which is not supposed to enact/enforce religious policies.

However polices involving science are part of the purview of the federal government.

Oh Jesus, if critical thinking is what this guy does we definitely need more nut jobs to vote.
