The image they have among the people who buy them does include the word sporty, no doubt about that. Think about it, from the Scion brand, you have 3 cars to pick from, the tC is the most sporty of them all. From a choice of 3 cars, they picked the "sporty" one. The salesman probably made sure they remembered that too.

Just based on specs, there is a difference of almost 600 pounds, not counting the extra things you had on your car, difference of just under 100HP, etc. (Torque difference is same #'s as well) If you have an automatic and he has a manual, he might get you on the launch if he knows how to use it properly, but once second gear comes in, it won't be a question. If he had the supercharger option on it or something, that would put him much closer and he'd have a chance. His car is much lighter, probably has shorter gearing meant for city driving, etc.

I thought you had an STi?

I'm not saying that he's got a fast car, but just that neither of these two cars is really anything crazy in terms of power and at this level, it can be hard to determine the winner. Your car's gearing is going to be a lot taller most likely and his will be shorter. If he's got the automatic, then he has no chance at all, but at least with a 5 speed manual, he can launch it decently and pray that his gearing is short enough to not lose by 50 car lengths.

Edit: Just for the record... I'm not even saying it's a close race, however that if he had the supercharger option, then he's got a real good shot thanks to the weight difference. Anyway, yes Jules, you'd have won :p

I used to. Got rid of it a while back...needed something my wife could drive occasionally.

And yes, the Maxima is an automatic. It's pretty quick but I've definitely owned faster cars and ones that handle and stop much better. It's basically a family hauler and I use it to drive to and from work when I'm not riding my bicycle.
Gotcha, it does have a good bit of power, I was just looking into it a little deeper. I've seen some of these "ricer" cars beat a lot of cars... especially the V6 Mustangs, slap an automatic on them and you're sure to lose with the V6 Stang. Issue is that the ricer car probably has shorter gearing, weigh's a ton less, is FWD, etc. and those things are enough to make it win.

He specifically stated he went a bit over the speed limit. You're just assuming that he was being unsafe.

often the safest way to drive on a public street is by flooring the gas pedal the moment a light turns green, right?

as to him not having his kid in the car with him, the point was that he's got other responsibilities in his life that, for an adult, usually mean you're not concerned with flexing your testosterone in front of a teenager who wants to drag race.
He was at a stop light, had a clear road, pressed the pedal. This isn't any more dangerous than it is to jump in a pool where you don't know the water chemistry, how much chlorine was added, etc.

You have a point that racing on public roads is dangerous, but I don't think it applies in this case. Your point in general is valid though.

There's one that I usually see on my way to work in the morning. I've never ran with him from a stop but during the few times I've done quick sprints during an open section of the road he was able to keep up. He probably has the supercharger or something though.

Eh, not really. I think they look rather boring, and slow.

If you want no show, in the performance sense (it's luxurious), and all go, check out the Volvo S60R AWD. You'll see what I'm talking about. It's the ultimate sleeper car. ;)

:D

It's always nice to lay the smack down once in a while.

I had some dude in a Dodge Durango rev at me at a light the other day. My truck is a POS by looks, but it will haul some ass.

I beat him by 3/4 a truck length to the next light... There were cars infront of us at this point. He kept revving like he wanted a rematch...

When I hit my brakes, I looked down.. We were going 60 in a 35. Oops.

I really shouldn't do sh!t like that, but I'm not one to turn down a race. :D

Unless you had other reasons to expect it to be a race, it seems like you were the only racer (otherwise misspelled as "ricer" in this thread).

I heard him rev and then launch and watched him jump as soon as the light changed. I could hear that he was definitely trying to out accelerate me.

I rarely do stuff like this but every now and then I'll take that bait. Oh well, nobody is perfect right? :p

Why do some of you get your panties in a knot over someone accelerating quickly from a stoplight in a non-residential area with no traffic and no danger to anyone else? This is a 4 lane divided road with a 50mph speed limit, no side streets and there was no traffic in front or behind us.

Yet I got the same treatment for doing the same against a far more worthy car on a 70Mph open country road.

It?s just the hypocrisy we have here at ATOT.

It's a 2003 Maxima SE. Only option is the power moonroof and it is completely stock with the exception of the stereo which is basically just an in dash Pioneer, I upgraded the speakers in the doors and installed an amp and sub in the trunk but that's it. The stock stereo sucked ass, this one is a million times better but it's still pretty mild as far as aftermarket systems go.

Edit-The new Maxima has a curb weight of 3591 lbs according to Edmunds.com

The kids who own Celica are even worse. Other day, I was at a red light in my G35 and this kid pulls up in a red celica and starts to throttle on the light.

It is a 2 lane road but the road merges into one about 500ft after the red light. As the light turned green, I just gave a little bit of gas and off I went whereas the kid was just trying to catch up with me to the next light..lol

That's correct, except it was against an Audi S3 not A3. :)

He already explained, read the thread.

I did, the thread was moving too fast and I didn't update it before I posted. My bad. People with slow cars shouldn't try to race. Like me =).
