School suspends 13 y.o. for 3 days for IM'ing "Hey!", they call it hacking

Hmm...yeah I think the principal overreacted big-time, and it's sad that he even admitted he's just trying to make an example out of the kid. At the same time, if I were the kid's parent I wouldn't be fighting it-that was a pretty dumbass thing for him to do.

meh it's all the same, computer teachers are teh noobs. that is except for my programming teacher who taught some of the kids in my class how to install CS on the school computers 😀

Did any of you actually read the article? You do realize he had no prior authorization to use the school's computers/network in such a manner, right? Therefore, he deserves exactly what he got. It may be a "harmless little prank" but the point is that he broke the rules and now he has to pay the price. Good lesson for a kid his age to learn, if you ask me...

edited for spelling

Some kid I know in my school sent a NET SEND message out in the beginning of the year that was much more vulgar than "Hey!", and he was only suspended for one day, and he is in 11th grade. I think suspending a 13 year old for 3 days for sending "Hey!" is way overkill. My school also called it "hacking".

My freshman year of HS I got my computer privileges suspended for that class the whole year and any class I took of her's later I would get an alternate assignment instead of being able to use a computer. Yes, for the same reason, net sending someone... teachers are asshats.

Computer teachers are definatly stupid as a group. Some tidbits about my comptuer teacher:

She told the class that an ethernet cable can trasmit data over any distance, as long as the cable dosent go "up and down" more than 10 times. She literally meant this!

She said that in addtion to being differnt protocols, the interent and email were on two seperate networks.

She refers to a command prompt as "DOS Land". If you enter "DOS Land", you get a detention, no questions asked. She said there is "no reason for you to be in 'DOS land' when I ping'd the fileserver from my station once, because I couldn't connect. I got a detention.

Also, she says things such as: Eliptical Mice (Optical) Labtop (laptop) and Flustrated (frustrated). Among others I cant recall right now.

If you read article then you would know there were NO written rules for using the computers. There was no warning, no rules, no nothing to say this kid did anything wrong.

if you aren't making this up, then baby jesus (the technology baby jesus) is crying, don't make baby jesus cry

i am going to be sick

If you were teaching a class in which the average student knew more about the subject than you did, you'd be scared and handing out ridiculous dicipline at every little thing too. Sad, but a fact of life in most K12 schools.

My God, at least they didn't throw the kid in jail and threaten to keep him there for 120 years and want $815,000 for that message.

Well...they *should*!!! :|

HEY!

hahaha, a hacked joo g000d! 🙂

Seriously though, I'm not surprised that the Principle made a wrong decision in this case. Just because he is an educator doesn't mean he's very adept with computers or OS commands and with the hype surrounding Hacking his decision(albeit totally wrong) makes a lot of sense(of the "common" variety). He should have investigated the situation more thoroughly though, getting the advice of those more in tune with computers/OSes/Hacking. That was his biggest mistake.

Coincidentally, last night on CNN(it may have been CNBC) the issue of Schools, Students, and misbehaviour was being discussed on some show. Much to my shock(doesn't sound right, but ah well) there was some guy advocating calling the Police and arrest of any student that so much as violated the Dress Code(if one existed)!! WTF? Ready for the Police State?

"I am speaking about one incident in the Birdville School District in which a student was expelled for tampering with the district's computers. Having been a computer teacher in the real world of public education for many years, let me say that suspension of students who are guilty of such tampering sends a message to all students that is beneficial and necessary.

So it's okay for her to send an equally meaningless "message" to everyone admitting she's stupid? She should execute net send domain "I'm a retarded ass who thinks I know what I'm talking about when I really don't so fire me, please"

It's been my experience also that most Systems Administrators in the public school systems are lacking in skills to properly prevent things like this from happening in the first place.
