I stopped reading the thread after a while since it's very negative which is very common for anandtech's forums.
Anyway, here's my input based on the OP:
The CONTINENT of Africa is plagued by molaria.
As Darwin would have it, another disease, sicle cell anemia is VERY common in african americans there. Think 90+%.
This is a disease which will kill you before 40.
Why does most everyone there have a genetic disease which should not normally be selected for?
Because sicle cell anemia causes blood cells to be shaped like a scicle. This reduces mobility of and prevents the uptake of molaria, making the SCA victim very resistant.
So evolution has selected for a disease which lets you live up to 40 (read: to reproduce) over a disease which will probably kill you before puberty.
Incidentally, blacks in America STILL are several dozen times more likely to have SCA than any other race although this likelyhood decreases with each generation outside of Africa.
Africa has more problems than HUNGER.
Also, right now, the average American uses 8.8 Global Hecares of land. The Average African? .33 hectares.
Trying to bring Africans' standard of living up to ours - even in terms of the food they consume is futile since the world cannot support it.
If everyone lived with North America's standard of living, we'd need about 4 Earths.
So...if you REALLY want to help people in Africa, you need to push for social reform and social/environmental education AT HOME and reduce your own ecological footprint.
