A 13-year-old girl has been sentenced to 90 lashes and two months' prison in Saudi Arabia after she took a mobile phone to school.

A court ordered the girl to be flogged in front of her classmates following an assault on the school principal, according to the Saudi daily newspaper Al-Watan.

After the assault she was discovered to have concealed a mobile phone, breaking strict Saudi regulations banning the use of camera-equipped phones in girls' schools.

Al-Watan said a court in the northeastern Gulf port of Jubail had sentenced the girl to 90 lashes inside her school, followed by two months' detention.

The punishment is harsher than tha dished out to some robbers and looters.

Why is it that 200 years ago, We (as in "the west") used to think of Native Americans, Africans, Australians and just about everybody else with less technology than us as "savages" even though they were often very civilized, yet, in today's world, it's in bad taste to even suggest that savage barbarians like these uncivilized brutes need to fvcking change ASAP and adopt some human rights because their society is unjust, and simply wrong.

90 lashes is pretty much Torture. And I think it's self evident that some issues really are Black and White. Torture is malicious in intent. It is never good. It is always bad, and completely unacceptable behavior for humans to be commiting.

I subscribe to the theory that the USA should not EVER under any circumstances torture anybody.

I also think that in addition, NOBODY should ever be permitted to torture anybody. Just because their cultural history says that they like to torture women because they think they are "inferior" doesn't mean they are "right."


I really think we as a nation need to get the fvck off of foreign oil and stop contributing to these tyrannical dictatorships such as Saudi Arabia.

a) 250 years ago, Whitey and Red Man were clashing with each other, burning each other's settlements, and occasionally some trading would break out in the meanwhile. When you're living a hand to mouth existence as these early settlers were, there isn't a whole lot of Sociological studies going on.

b) There are many accounts of individual explorers such as Lewis and Clark admiring the consistency of the culture they found. It wasn't civilized by their values because there were no real roads, no infrastructure, and no real currency. To them, that was civilization (a value that had been codified for thousands of years).

c) "Savage," suggests primality, and to the Europeans, the Natives were very primal: the way they dressed, the way they hunted, the way they fought. Furthermore, "Savage" was the 18th century form of saying "Barbarian," which itself was an ancient Greek word at its base which referred merely to anyone who wasn't a member of the Hellenistic world (initially this would be a member of the Hellenes Polis, and then extended to the Macedonian overlords) It wasn't necessarily a pejorative, but a form of identification.

d) In regards to the Africans, well the same sort of logic goes. Considering the amount of communication that had flowed all over Europe, people associated slave trading with Africa, and they knew that Africans themselves would sell slaves to the Europeans who were their biggest market.
Before the Europeans, Muslims were the biggest slave traders in the Mediteranean. It is interesting to note that slave trading was carried on by Europeans from roughly 1500-1800, while the Muslims engaged in slave trading from 800-1700.

I think it's funny that people like "Muhammad Ali," called themselves that in the first place considering that Arab Muslims would consider blacks merely slaves or lesser Muslims.

Note that the Ancient Greeks (or Hellenes as they would have called themselves) called the Macedonians to their north, "barbarians," and essentially, the Macedonians were culturally identical to the ancient Greeks, excepting their style of government.

SA's culture is certainly disgusting in many aspects, such as that demonstrated in the OP, but you are seriously underestimating the barbarity of the Taliban. Taliban behavior actually makes SA look like a collection of harmless saints. I'm serious... the Taliban are barely human.
