Welp, looks like my upgrade to a 6s+ is a foregone conclusion now. ^_^

I was planning on finally retiring my Galaxy S4 and getting a Note.
I've gone from "I'll wait until the Note 5" to "I wonder what kinda deals they'll have on Note 4's when the Note 5 hits the shelves"

Maybe I'll just keep rocking the S4 and continue my tradition of scowling at all these damn new phones

I actually like it.. times are changing.. who knows they'll make a variation that will include SD card and removable battery or maybe a bigger battery.. I'm hopeful.. but if it doesn't happen,I think I'd be fine.

Still hyperbolic imo
No, Samsung had an opportunity to have a difference between a consumer oriented phone and a phablet meant for productivity, business, and/or enthusiasts.

Maybe the oen is a gimmick the way most use it but it does look like a way to more easily pick parts of documents to edit and the SD card option and ability to swap in a spare battery when your away from your desk and continue working is great for people who need to squeeze in work while on the road.

Now, that the Note 5 will be more like a 6+ more people will just go for the iPhone.

It doesn't make sense because of the S6 Edge+. I (and many others) figured the non-removable battery, no mSD, glass back and all that was going to the Edge+ while the Note kept its power user feature set. Now there are two completely different phones for only two reasons: One has a pen, one has curved edge displays.

This I don't understand. It's not like the 6S+ is going to have anything the Note line is/was known for (save for size).

the thought is "Samsung cannot offer me anything over Apple". No microsd + no remove able battery = why bother with a note

Apple should surprise the world by including a digitizer+stylus in the iPhone 6s+. We'll then see the Note 5 go on fire sale in a few weeks after that

^so much this.

^Samsung would deserve that.

My Note 2 has a busted screen and nothing really interests me besides the Note 5. Wonder if they will heavily discount the Note 4 which may be an option.

On the S4 myself, and I had the same idea.

Nope nope nope.

There is literally no reason to buy this over the S6 phones. It's the same damn thing...but bigger. Complete and utter fail.

Hope they fire whomever came up with this Note 5 and S6 plus scheme.

Huh, I'm in the same boat too. I really feel Samsung has lost a huge opportunity this round. It might be the "2011 HTC" moment for their smartphones if they acquire the reputation for shitty battery life with the GS6 and potentially the Note 5

Just read Ars review.

Samsung made an iPhone 6+.

Everybody wants to be like Apple.

Yeah somewhat disappointing, although I will say after playing around with my gf's S6 edge some I'm kind of tempted to upgrade for the new camera and the smoother experience. The note 4 isn't bad performance-wise but the few weird areas where it slows down (like the delay when hitting the multitasking button) are not a porblem on the S6 edge. The camera is flat out awesome on the S6 though, it's probably the fastest phone camera I've used (even over the iphone 6) and the pictures it takes look really good.

I went ahead and preordered the 64GB Note 5. I am replacing an LG G2 with a cracked screen, it still functions but the top middle section of the screen has stopped responding to my finger presses so it's time to get a new phone.

It was LG G4 or the Note 5 and the Note 5 looks to have a slight edge in specs and the s-pen looks decent.

To be fair it's bigger and has a spec bump. 7422 SOC vs 7420 and 4GB RAM instead of 3GB. That should help any performance hiccups the S6 may have had.

Where do you see 7422? It's the same 7420 mentioned everywhere.

7422 and a 4100 battery would have made it a worthy model.

Shrinking battery is the biggest WTF to me. I just don't understand how you get rid of all the extra hardware needed to make the battery removable but not put a larger one in its place.

*sigh* I should be taking much better care of my Note 4

So after some thought - if there is a promotion like last year where I can get $200 back trading in any phone, I'll do the normal thing I do and pickup a Tmobile version off-contract to use on AT&T.

Unfortunately it looks like only Best Buy and Sprint are offering a $200 promo right now (BB doesn't carry TMO) and TMO is offering a year of Netflix.

While it was a bit underwhelming, after some thought I don't know if there is a better phone out there.

- At $700 for the 32GB version and $780 for the 64GB version, it's not far off from last year's 32GB Note 4 price of $750.
- What other Android phone has a camera and fingerprint scanner that can match it. Even the 6S Plus likely won't have a materially better camera. I really like the double home button click to take quick photos.
- It'll have the best screen you can buy and the best Android SOC in 2015
- At 153.2 x 76.1 x 7.6 mm with a 5.7" screen it's substantially more compact than the 6 Plus (which will have the same dimensions in the S update) at 158.1 x 77.8 x 7.1 mm with a 5.5" screen. I'm a fan of the thin bezels and 76.6% screen to body ratio
- Fast charging + fast wireless charging is useful
- I don't use S-pen a lot but I do. The note taking while the screen is off seems actually useful to quickly scribble stuff down (vs. turning on phone, unlocking it, opening a note app, etc).
- The T-mo version will let me continue to root and load a debloated ROM

I don't think anything in the Android world will touch it this year - though clearly there are better values - mostly b/c there isn't anything else compelling at the high end. The 6S Plus will probably have a slightly better camera, Force Touch, and iOS - but those aren't compelling for me to switch.
