The issue is calibrating these screens. If Samsung did a good job, then people wouldn't complain so much. Quite honestly I don't think the Galaxy phones are giving OLED a bad name. Google did that with its horribly calibrated Nexus One, Nexus S, and Galaxy Nexus. ALL of those phones looked ridiculously blue.

With that said if you just calibrate those phones on your own, they look a lot better. My Nexus S for example looks beautiful. More punchy than my SGS2 even despite the S2's better display and lack of pentile.

People like you are what's wrong with the world. Always satisfied with the status quo. You should encourage your employer, Samsung, to make better OLED screens to shut the "haters" up instead of defending them.

No, its anal idiots like you that are wrong with the world. All you do is biotch bitch bitch, whine whine whine. Get out of the basement and do something about it. Start a tech company and make a better product. Put up or shut up. You and your anal-anti-samsung friends are really pathetic. Make a better screen or jump off a roof.

People need to remember how young oled is as a technology. And people saying they dislike oled should remember that it's one of the possible futures of display technology. Lcd is basically at the end of its life(thought it's amazing what they're doing with the technology still) , that's why it has certain advantages. Oled has only really been around a few years in consumer technology now and it has a very bright future :)

And like any display oled can be calibrated to do anything really. The sgs3 and Note ii had a basically perfect professional calibration courtesy of a custom kernel developer and it's amazing :)

It's a phone. Why does it need to be calibrated in the first place? Are you guys running Photoshop/Lightroom on your 5" screen devices? If it looks good that's good enough.

I gotta admit I get a laugh out of these hate threads appearing basically weekly.

Seriously 90% of the discussion on the S4 seems to be hate threads, I hate plastic, or I hate OLED.

Just don't buy the phone if you hate it so much.

The screen in the gs4 is a new process and uses lazers and a new diamond array and fixes almost all the issues the gs3 had and yet Dari still needs to find links and videos to post about how bad older screens were.

He went out of his way to a mobile store to look at a gs4 but said a lesbian was using it and couldn't get a chance to check it out but needed to bring up in his thread on how crappy the note 2 looked.

Its funny how he talks about Sony's white pixel technology when the xpera uses it and every review says its washed out in colors from it and the gs4 with its latest gen amoled screens smokes the hell out of the Sony screen

Wow, just cause you don't like them, doesn't mean they are bad. Geez.

I prefer SAMOLED universally over LCDs. A lot of the time I prefer my old crappy pentile Gnex to my current Nexus 4. Which calibrated by the way. The blacks are just so bad on LCDs. You can fix the whites on SAMOLED display with some calibration. But you can't fix th blacks on an LCD. SGS4 has excellent white levels and perfect black levels. So what more could you ask for?

This is simple not true.

I actually really like my GS2's screen. After close to 2 years of use, the screen has gradually become less blue and looks more natural. It's a pleasure to have a phone screen that I can read in bed at night while my wife is sleeping and not ruin my night vision or wake her up - just apply a 90% screen filter.

LCD's just don't get dark enough.

This is the problem with Samsung's OLEDs. They overcompensate for the blue because it dies faster (the pixels are organic). So, in the beginning, there will be a bias (tint) towards blue or other colors) and, as the blue pixels die over time, things will start to even out. Then you will lose the blues before the other colors go. This is the problem.

For regular people it is easy to sway them either way based upon what you show them:

Show them a webpage with a white background on the AMOLED : "Oh you are right that white sucks the other one is better."

Show them a picture of flowers on the AMOLED : "Oh you are right the colors on the other screen are so dull compared to this, this one is better."

I'm sorry but I'm not buying this 'dull' image argument. The photos produced by the iPhone are vibrant and, most importantly, accurate. The only reason one would claim the photos are 'better' on the OLED screen is because they are seeing artificial colors.

The only thing I'll concede to OLED is blacks. Even then it really doesn't matter when comparing something like text on a website. I have no problems making out and reading black text on my iPhone 5.

Ahhh, if I respond to this post the way I want to, there is no doubt a moderator will be on my ass faster than Chris Christie finishes a pie. But I won't. The answer you're looking for is already in the OP.

It's funny you should say that, because reading on a full white background isn't that pleasant after a while. That's why many forums, like our own AnandTech's here, opt for a slightly darker tone.

The majority of websites are white or off white in color with respect to their background. It's a crucial element to reading text on websites in general.

I honestly should just give up. OLED will always have its defenders. LCD produces proper whites, accurate colors, and uses less power to produce whites in the first place. If others like OLED screens, so be it. Really doesn't matter what others use in the end as long as I have the choice to choose what I feel is superior for my needs. (IPS LCD.)

He's not (I think) talking about the photos, hes talking about the screen. OLED screens are a lot more vibrant. And all colours on a device are artificial. Do you go into galleries and start complaining that Van Goghs pictures look to vibrant and are therefore inferior?

The only thing I'll concede to OLED is blacks. Even then it really doesn't matter when comparing something like text on a website. I have no problems making out and reading black text on my iPhone 5.

So if just being to read black text on a white background is ok why does white balance matter then?

Those websites that are off white, do you email them and tell them to use true white?

I honestly should just give up. OLED will always have its defenders.

Maybe you should give up, why would you try and convince someone else that their preference is wrong?

LCD produces proper whites, accurate colors, and uses less power to produce whites in the first place.

They can do those things but what does power draw matter? Who cares as long as the devices total up time is OK? LCD can produce proper whites and accurate colours but we are talking about devices a few inches across that we use in a variety of locations. Its really not THAT important.

If others like OLED screens, so be it. Really doesn't matter what others use in the end as long as I have the choice to choose what I feel is superior for my needs. (IPS LCD.)

Now you're talking sense although I have a feeling LCD probably has a limited lifetime for use in mobile devices.

Plus in brighter lighting conditions, you need more saturated colours to compensate. The more accurate colours end up looking washed out.

Ideally, the auto-brightness would account for this and adjust saturation with brightness as well.

So everyone is attacking the messenger and not the message, I see. No one even bothered to comment on the video. People are equating OLEDs with subpar/garbage Samsung crap. SONY uses OLED screens for their high end applications where color accuracy is absolutely paramount. They also have the technology for white organic pixels. IMHO, they should license it out for others to use in the consumer space...

You are being attacked because your long-time hatred of all things samsung is just truly pathetic. You spend way too much of your life spewing such samsung hate. Its really childish and pathetic. You should be more constructive with your time. No one, except the few other pathetic souls who are on your side, gives a shit. Its just not that big a deal. you dont like samsung, dont buy samsung. You dont like oled screens, dont buy them. Really dude, move the fuck on.

Ahhh, I see that you're stuck on stupid. I have a phone with an OLED screen and I love it. When I see one of the high end Samsung AMOLED screens it looks like piss or sewer water. As others have mentioned here, OLED is the future and it's getting a bad rep because of the crap Samsung is putting out. If you don't like what I'm saying put me on ignore but you will never convince me to stop giving my opinion so either take it or ignore it.

I don't want to ignore you or change your opinion. I never even tried. Your anal hatred of samsung is most amusing. I can just see you turning red in the basement on your KB. It amuses me. So rant on please.
