Its amazing on how popular and how big Samsung has gotten. IIRC, about 10 years ago, Samsung was hardly known in the US. Today, it is one of the most reputable electronics companies in the US.

Look at their portfolio and they are into everything:
Electronics Industries
Financial Services
Chemical Industries
Machinery & Heavy Industries
Engineering & Construction
Retail & Entertainment
Apparel & Advertisement
Education & Medical Services
Trading & Resource development
Food supplier & security services
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung

Just amazing when compared to US multinational companies.

America is falling behind because of foolish changes to its culture. Once, Americans prided themselves on their innovation and creativity, now, they pride themselves on how much money they can make screwing other people over. American children surround themselves with stupidity and reject education. They are being coddled into a life of mediocrity and consumerism, and they don't even care. America is about to fall. Everyone knows this.

Their goal was to beat Sony. I read an article a few years ago about them and their ability to turn R&D into product is incredibly fast. They are certainly doing a very good job. They've always been big in the semi-conductor market.

Sony suffers from Japanese arrogance. There really is nothing worse. Well, I suppose it's great for everyone other than Sony.

When I saw Lady GaGa in her meat dress, I literally hugged my TV in tears. It was physically and emotionally exhausting for me to watch her win so many awards. She's so brilliant. So talented. So beautiful.

Wait, you did not watch her on a Macbook Pro using Apple TV?

They are doing very well but this is bad for S. Korea. Just like the financial industry in America, S. Korea cannot afford for Samsung to do bad, hence they are heavily protected in their home country. That means they need to grow fast in order to maintain the status quo. This cannot continue forever. One company representing 20% of S. Korea's GDP is not healthy (in fact, it is very dangerous) so the government needs to help foster other competition within the country or else Samsung may eat all of S. Korea.

It doesnt hurt that Sony has done a piss poor job of keeping up with the competition. Remember when have "Sony" on a product used to mean cutting edge technology with superior quality?

I think the saddest part about all this is the people of Korea will come to realize something that the people of Japan, America, and Western Europe have realized long ago. This is that a company exists for its shareholders, not its employees. Samsung will set up shop in China, India or wherever labor is cheap faster than you can say "bubi bubi". In fact, it was earlier this year that Samsung, a private company, had to get permission from the S. Korean government to open an LCD factory in China. The official reason was IP but the real reason was jobs. I don't think they will keep asking.

I agree, unfortunately. We live in a society where everyone is great, but nobody is. Where everyone is a victim of something. Where people will stand in line hours to get the latest Halo game but won't take five minutes to vote in elections. The west is sandwiched between Asian conglomerates on one side and knuckle dragging extremists on the other. It's too wimpy to confront either. People would rather hide scared, ignorant, and dependent.

Network's infamous mad as hell scene is still relevant today.

That's because everyone is chasing easy money. Look at all the brilliant engineers, mathematicians, statisticians, physicists and other scientists (or potential scientists) that have left their field and gone into finance? It's a fucking shame.

A lot of you are ignorant about Korean business, government, and society. Samsung represents everything that is wrong about how Korea operates. Do not be fooled by its shiny gadgets and hot models. Behind the facade is an ugly system that will be the reason for the downfall of its people.

But they're still making awesome products, right?

Samsung is a Chaebol, same with LG. The Japanese counterpart is the Keiretsu (Mitsui, Mitsubishi, Sumitomo).

These have been in existence for a long time and have become more integrated over time.

I'm not sure about Korea but in Japan, the companies are so large that they wield massive influence over the government, to the point that often, they are the government. That's what happens when you control double-digit portions of GDP as well as having a massive banking arm.

Dear Leader and The Better Korea will correct Samsung and the corrupt imposed capitalist society put in place by western imperialists.

Samsung is all about cheap asian labor costs. Keep in mind that they have some vision and that Korea is a great place to live and work. The USA and the UN gave them the freedom that they needed to thrive. As a Soldier I was always amazed that Korean people can make anything they put their minds to as long as someone is willing to pay for it. They are very good capitalists.

Lately I have been watching Korean Historical Movies. The videos are actually quite good. It is subtitled in English. They seem to have had a history with lots of devious people.

This series has over 70 1 hour episodes:

It is not bad for a story based on historical Events.

Could you post info on this? Samsung's position does seem pretty sinister, if the 20% of gdp figure is near accurate. But, I haven't read anything about it.

Not everyone knows but more true words have never been typed on this forum (imo).

Heck with designing and making it ourselves...just offshore it to China (or lowest bidder) and loan people enough money (here) to buy it. Profit.
