I find I am more careful and mindful of my devices when they do not have a protective case on them.

While I know this is anecdotal and not a universal truth, I have noticed that the people who do heavily cover up their phones/laptops/whatnot are also more lackadaisical with how they protect/treat those devices.

It is trivial to change the note 4's battery so you don't need to treat every note 4 as having a 2 year old battery. However, on the note 8 battery upgrade in 2 years is going to be a pia.

You can't compare those numbers. That was probably done 3+ years ago, possibly with a pre-production phone, with a brand spanking new fresh battery. Not only has battery life testing changed in those years, every Note 4 battery currently in use on the planet has aged at least two years and it will not get anywhere near 90 hours.

Oh no, I take it to the mall and pay someone $30-50 and it might take a whole hour or two of waiting. Once, every 2 years.

While it DOES require someone to have a few tools, battery replacements for these phones are one of the most common repairs outside screen replacements.

Or if you've got a backup phone you can send it in to Samsung directly and they'll do it for $20. Or know someone in the industry willing to do it at cost of materials or similar.

Charge you price minus trade-in. You have 15 days to send in your trade-in after receiving the N8 (don't know if that's postmark or receive-by date), after which they'll charge the remainder to whatever form of payment you used on the initial purchase.

About 2 weeks ago Wally World was selling refurb StraightTalk 5S's for $50. Out of stock now, but it seems to come back on a fairly frequent basis. Check Slickdeals on a regular basis and it's bound to come back

Ugh, iono what to do at this point other than wait for the LG V30 or Mi Mix 2 to come out and see where they goes. I somehow got mouthwash into the bottom of my Note 5 (yeah, yeah) about 2 weeks ago and have been using an iphone 5s to tide me over while I dry out the thing and fix it myself. Figured it's been two years and I might as well get something newer and relegate the N5 to backup status, but I just... can't get onboard with anything released this year so far.

- I have an S8+ for work. The thing is too tall for me to use one-handed (without one-handed mode), which I could do just fine on my N5. The phone is a great piece of kit, don't get me wrong - most of my complaints are over relatively trivial things like Bixby (can't customize since it's a work phone). I just prefer something with a bit more bezel (so I can grip it better), physical nav buttons, and front-facing FPR, but I guess those are going the way of the dinosaur. edit: and yes i know the S8 exists
- If the Note FE (the Note 7 refurb version) was closer to its target price of $610 then I would've bought one already. Ticks all the boxes I have and still has the physical buttons and front-mounted FPR. I just can't bring myself to pay $750-800 for a year-old device, even if I would be happy with it and the negative performance delta from current flagships would be unnoticeable to me.
- $930 is just too steep for a friggin' phone to me
- I need a headphone jack, so that rules out the Essential, U11, and upcoming Pixel 2s
- I'm beginning to take more vacations (yay disposable income) and now leave my DSLR at home in favour of my phone when traveling, so I want a better-than-average camera. I admittedly haven't paid much attention to any Chinese flagships coming out largely due to this point alone

Which seems to leave... only the LG G6 and upcoming V30 for consideration. I'm fairly distrustful of LG right now given my crap experiences with some of their other (non-phone) products, though.

No, not at all. These things aren't cheap, even in the $600-$700 range. Anything nearing $1000 and beyond you should get pretty much EXACTLY what you want (within reason of course.)

I had to give up on removable batteries years ago unfortunately, but so far at least I'm getting 98% of everything else I've wanted with the Note 8. Sammy didn't stupidly remove the headphone jack or other needed features.

Save your money for the company that makes what you want. If these companies had their way and everyone cowed to it, they'd still be selling us S5-era phones (MINUS key features like headphone jacks, SD expansion, etc) for $1000+.

Well, thanks to you I just pulled the trigger on a Note FE. Call me stupid for shelling out for year-old hardware, but I realized I was more interested in the form factor than I was the hardware performance, and since that form factor likely isn't coming back any time soon...

I'm far from being a power user; I don't recall ever using the stylus, and my phones were more or less just glorified mp3 player/wikipedia/google machines. That said, I hate change if I don't see a benefit, and I've just gotten way too used to the way previous Notes felt when I was holding and using them. Since 2011 I've owned an N1, N2, N3, and N5 and... I guess nothing else compares. The S8+ is just too skinny for its height for me, and I don't see or wouldn't notice anything better on the S8 either. Except price, anyway.

In the end I lose wifi calling and possibly carrier aggregation, AWS support, and VoLTE, but those are fair tradeoffs for me since I only very rarely make calls. I'll just wait until the S9/N9 show up and see where the market goes from there.

We have an s7 on VZW that's paid $448 of $672. So we can just trade this in for the note 8 and just owe $480 total (still monthly payments). That simple? Hate the S7 battery life.

VZW is giving $480 off when trading in S7 and S8 for the Note8 as far as I am aware.

I am quite careful with my phone but I still prefer a waterproof device and will get something shockproof if its available.

I went by the VZ store today to look at the note 8 (they have them on display). Didn't particularly like it. It is pretty much identical to the S7+ so if you like the S7+ (or S7+ design) i guess you will like the note 8.

1) speakers had good clarity (better than S7) but were not particularly loud.
2) I really don't like the edge design (too easy to disrupt the phone by having your hand touch the screen when holding one handed).
edge design increase likeliness of cracks if dropped.
3) The phone is narrower and longer than my note 4. On the surface this isn't a bad thing because by being narrower one handed operations should be easier ('cept for the issue with the edge design mucking things up) but it would take a while to get use to the new form factor.

I'm thinking i'll wait for the LG G7 and then decide. Samsung makes good screens and decent cameras but the rest is really turning me off.

Well you only owe ~$230 from your previous post so pay the $230 out of pocket, trade it in for $480 then finance the other $480.
It's still $250 savings. And you're financing the other $480 over 24 months interest free from VZW so it's only $12.75/month which might be less than your current monthly payments for your S7. Meaning you'll get a lower monthly bill.

Obviously if you can't swing the out of pocket expense you're not gonna be able to take advantage.

I'd probably own one of these myself by now if Samsung had made them work fully for the US. It seems clear to me they purposefully didn't to make all us former Note 7 owners have to wait for the Note 8.

It's strange to me Samsung doesn't allow Note 4's for trade-in, that's a better phone than an S5, and newer.

I'll sell my S7E for whatever I can get for it as well.

Gotcha, a friend of mine also did, he asked a samsung chat rep today who said his would be shipping out tomorrow but others had already started shipping today for delivery in the next 2-3 business days. He ordered an unlocked black model around noon on the 24th of august (they're shipping out in order according to the rep).

So depending WHEN you ordered it, it should be shipping in the next day or two if it hasn't already.

I believe they're also requesting it be signature required. So you may need to pick it up at a local hub or make arrangements etc.
