So fingerprint reader stuck on the back, and it doesn't fit in the standard VR Gear? Well that sealed the deal for me, not getting. Dunno what Samsung was thinking there... 🙁

They usually don't offer the free VR headset until after the launch window.

The Note5 had a free VR headset in october or november just ~2-3 months after it released if I remember correctly.
 
So what advantage (other than water proof) does the note 8 have over the note 4 (one disadvantage is you can't easily change batteries).

So. All I have to do is use my email address I registered the N7 with and I get 425 off and apparently keep the N7 (they'll assume I sent it in long ago)?

If you registered the N7 with samsung, then they have the serial # and should know if you've returned it or not, so honestly I don't know.

It might ask you to return it when your Note8 arrives like a trade in.

Uh, ridiculous speed? I sold my N4 this spring because it became so laggy. Figured I would sell it while it was still worth something. The MM really slowed it down and battery life seemed to take a hit too. The camera should be much better too if the S8 is any indication. I really like the N4 but just feel the software really did it in. Maybe a factory reset would have helped but the economics of selling at the time made more sense to me.

Ordered. I entered the email I used with the N7, says I am good, ordered the N8 with a trade-in of an iphone 5s (have tons laying about) and did the sammy financing through TD bank. Total cost is 504. 21 bucks a month for 24 months which i'll pay off faster once I sell my S7 edge and possibly my S8+. Got the 360 camera.

Mine did as well, i keep it around at home for using while my S7E is charging. Its almost like they bloat the new software on purpose to slow down old devices to force people to upgrade. Rooting it and installing cyanogen sped it up back to what it was like new, hasnt slowed down since.
 
Yeah, agreed on the boat. As if they made no effort to optimize it at all....kinda like iOS!

I'm done with rooting and ROMs...I just want a phone that works as intended. Besides, with a locked bootloader it's kinda pointless anyway.
 
just hope there are no issues this time around....I think the ones who ordered directly from Samsung got screwed the hardest during the Note 7 recalls....

Hmm, not a bad deal there. I wonder, how does the thing work? Do they charge you the full price and issue a refund later, or do they charge you the price minus the trade in?
Edit: Are you looking at a used 5s? I'm not finding one for anything less than $100.

You can't compare those numbers. That was probably done 3+ years ago, possibly with a pre-production phone, with a brand spanking new fresh battery. Not only has battery life testing changed in those years, every Note 4 battery currently in use on the planet has aged at least two years and it will not get anywhere near 90 hours.

I'm upgrading from a Note5 and already bought a case for the Note8 that I preordered.
Whenever i've got both in hand i can let you know how the difference feels coming from a Note5.

I must live under a rock I did not know about Samsung's trade in program. I have a perfectly fine LG G4 I don't need, however I don't need a new phone right now. I will wait for full reviews of the Note 8 camera especially to see if it's worth me shelling out the spare cash for it. I was considering the S8+ but I really want the dual cameras.

The idea that there's actually a requirement to toddler wrap a phone and cover the screen with sheets of garbage as the only way to 'guard against damage' is ludicrous.

Edge screen phones (along with non-edge) are fine as-is. The problem as I see it is some people think that just because they wrap a sleek device in plastic crap that it's then okay to toss around, put in the same pocket with sharp car keys, dunk in water, get it in the sand, drop etc. No. Guarding against damage is really just taking care of the thing in the first place.
 
I've yet to break a screen in over a decade of smart phone ownership so I would hardly call myself abusive. But facts are facts and phones need to stand up to much more abuse then most any other device, period. Accidents happen...maybe I've just been a bit lucky too but you cannot deny the edge screen is harder to protect. There's a reason why Otterboxes are popular.....
 
Sounds to me like you're just careful with your stuff, which is the best protection there is.

No, I don't agree that an edge screen is "harder to protect".

To me this is like saying the bumper of my current car is harder to protect than my last car. Well, no, not really. No matter what I'm driving- I'm NOT prone to wreck it! I don't drive any car any differently based on some notion of what car is more or less crash-able than another.

Likewise, I wouldn't look at a non-edge phone and think, "Oh, this is easier to protect from damage." No it isn't. Don't be careless with it, PERIOD.

I kinda saddens me to know that people will take an awesome phone like the Note 8- and stick it inside some cheap plasti-crap ToddlerBox thing. Such a waste of a sleek device, IMO.

Save whatever amount a ToddlerBox costs and put that into INSURING the phone.

In two years when you sell the phone I almost guarantee someone who takes care of their device won't have to reduce the price for minor wear that's anywhere close to paying x amount for ToddlerBox/ screen protector nonsense. AND the added bonus that the whole time you had the phone, it didn't look like crap.
