Samsung 830 series new firmware release today

Not to be outdone by Crucial, Samsung have today released a firmware update to their 830 series.

Drives shipped with CXM01B1Q. Today CXM02B1Q was released via bootable .ISO.

The firmware wouldn't work though Magician 3.1 and kept saying the drive already had the latest firmware. Oddly they've released an ISO before updating Magician.

I couldn't be bothered to type the release notes so I've linked them below. I have just completed the process using a CD-RW and it worked fine. Took about 10 seconds to actually flash the firmware.

It did not mention anything about powering off between rebooting but as Intel and SF drives requre it, I didn't think it would hurt and powered down for 30 seconds before switching back on.

Is this firmware release before or after the reported bug????

What reported bug?

Evidently there is an issue in installing the firmware...sometimes doesn't work, causes BSOD and more...all part of the thread in overclock.net...

Just wondering if this a reposted firmware update?

The issue seems to be with the windows flashing version. Perhaps your bootable cd .iso works best...not sure

I was not aware of these issues to be honest.

With something as serious as a BIOS or SSD firmware update, I will always strip it down into as simple as possible. This is why I never even considered Windows flashing and burned the firmware iso to a CD. I also power cycled the drive for 30 seconds before powering back up.

Granted Windows flashing is supported by their Magician software but I guess thats +1 for experience.

CD? Oh well its better than some things that STILL need a DOS floppy boot disk to update (eg ST9160421AS in HP DC7900)

The firmware on my drive is updated but i couldnt get it to work in windows(its my os disk) I did the bootable cd method and even then if you look at the link it show a photo of my screen. I could see what the words were. I just kept hitting yes and rebooted. Other than that no problem

You have a real beef with anything that isn't 100% electronic.

Samsung offer an ISO which can obv be used by CD, DVD or USB and Windows flashing. I just took the old school safest route. Good job I did really.

So what does that leave us with in regards to SSDs/controllers that do not and have never needed a firmware update? Samsung 470?

I'd weigh both sides of the pendulum equally. The ones with tons of updates, and the ones that don't have any update are probably the ones that need a quality update most.

There was a dearth of updates for the old early Jmicron OCZ drives that I used.

Not to nitpick..but this is totally different than the Crucial firmware. The Crucial actually increased performance a ton. This is just compatibility.

I don't get your post.

Crucial firmware 0009 increased performance a ton. The one released the other day, 0309, fixes a specific issue. It doesn't do anything for performance.

The Samsung as you said is a general compatibility and reliability update. Are you implying 830 users should not update because there is no performance increase? 😕

What are you talking about?

Crucial released a new firmware for their m4 on 13 Jan. Samsung also released a new firmware on 13 Jan. That's all I was getting at above.

Firmware upgrade was pretty painless.

1. Extracted the files from Samsung's .iso
2. Made 1024MB fat16 syslinux bootable usb stick with http://www.rmprepusb.com/
3. Copied Samsung's files to stick and renamed isolinux -> syslinux.
4. Booted from usb stick, firmware upgrade software ran and updated fw without issues.

That Rmprepusb is pretty handy software. Used it to make a windows 7 installation usb stick and updated from vista with it 🙂

Totally weird problem, this is what I got when I booted into the ISO. I had to randomly guess the keys to upgrade it. Took me a couple tries but I did it.

me too. except that the same usb drive works correctly in my laptop (amd) but is garbled in my desktop (nvidia) since an asus bios update. recreating the bootable usb drive does'nt help.

I have an nvidia card also, I wonder if that's the issue. I have another machine with intel 3000 HD graphics that I need to upgrade as well. I bet that one will be fine.

[update]
Yeah, intel card was fine.

I just sent Samsung and email with my specs. Anyone with the same problem might want to do the same. My video card is and evga 460, mobo is Asus p8p67 deluxe. Funy thing is i stuck the bootable cd in an older pc(evga 9800 and the mobo is a p35) and the words were clear
