You need to take a good long look at whether Computer Science is what you really want to do. It's not so much the fact that you're having a hard time with Calculus 1 (though that is something of a red flag), but that you're willing to give it up so easily. Engineering will kick your butt up and down, and if you give up at the first sign of failure you're in for a rough six years or so.

Also, Starting Strength is pretty solid, and it'll make you hungry. 3000 calories isn't that hard anyway, a Chipotle burrito by itself is over 1k. Reading this thread makes it seem like you doom your efforts before you even begin.

For me it is. I down a Winco chocolate chip muffin every freaking morning for breakfast and that fills me quite easily. Some days I can't even eat the whole thing because I get sick from it. If I have trouble downing a 350 calorie muffin, then I probably am going to have way more trouble with a 1k+ burrito...

It's just the truth... If I try to stuff my face then I get diarrhea every time. (And I mean, every time...)

Dude you would make the cutest pet, but I'd need you to promise to let me house train you.

Then you fucking stay in school. Work any sidejob you can if you have too.

DO NOT come out on a downswing. You will set your life's income based on that first real salary almost all of the time.

Edit: When I said meet ladies I meant meet ladies and actually go out on dates and possibly get laid once in a while even. So far, I meet them and then they run away screaming froot loops. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I think it's just how I look.

No, it's not how you look. It's the fruit loops, bro. And you're probably just acting all weird around them.

Plenty of dudes that look way worse than you get trim all the time.
You just need a personality.

It's really not all that bad right now (especially CS...). I just graduated with a Business IT degree (think Systems Engineering), and talking to the people in my graduating class, it sounds like salaries range anywhere from 58-65k+ (D.C. area). Plus, it sounds like he won't be graduating for another 6-7 years anyway.

WOW!!!!!!

you actually gave up on the first damn day????

If you are going to give up that easy you might as well just drop out of school completely.

Not to sounds too pessimistic, but unless you have some actual work experience and/or certifications landing a Systems Engineering job right out of school is going to be tough, especially in this job market. I'm not saying you can't, and I'm not sure how good/bad the DC market is, but that's not where most Business IT Degree people start. Most start in Helpdesk, desktop support, etc. then move into system and network engineering/administration. In DC these entry level jobs might pay close to the pay range you listed though, I'm not sure.

I just graduated. Degree in engineering. Took me 6 years from start to finish (with ~15 major changes in the first 3 years before settling).

Got a C+, B-, C, C-, C, and C+ in the six required calculus classes. More C- scores in courses that followed. Finished with a 2.4 GPA.

Now I have ~$90k in loans. Job prospects are meek since construction industry sucks. Likely to take a $30k-$40k job and work my way up.

But, after all that, I still don't look at life like you do.

Time to forget how you used to be and put all your effort into what you want to be. It sounds easy but it's hard.

Better start soon or you'll wake up at 40 and realized you're REALLY fucked.

It also depends on the school. In my area even B school grads are getting good paying jobs. My friend graduated as a ME at an ok school and got a 62k/year job with benefits. The guy is wicked smart, but he also got awful grades. That being said, he got laid off 6 months later with half the staff. I'm hearing that across the river Harvard MBA's are have a low secure rate 1st year out.

Americans have access to everything, yet there are still those who are too pathetic for it to make any difference.

Yeah but what do you expect with a 2.4GPA with that many major changes and that much time? I'm not ragging on you, I've also taken the road less traveled, and that's why I know that you set yourself up for disaster by taking extra years and having major changes without an impressive, cohesive "winner's tale" story behind it.

Oh, you misunderstood. I graduated in May, so I have a job in that range already (my major had a 90%+ job placement rate...). If you talk to most CS/BIT majors actually about their post-graduation plans it's like there isn't even a recession on. Kind of bizarre really. I was just trying to say the job market for these majors isn't as bad as all that.

Edit: I didn't have too much previous job experience (it was there though), but I did have a rockin' GPA.

Maybe it is. I don't understand why they wouldn't want the sugary deliciousness...

Yeah, but a lot of them also are with unattractive girls. I'm a pretty visual person. :\

I wasn't ready for the class. I'm going to talk to some tutors over the summer to help me prep for the class during fall term. Seriously guys, if I don't understand almost any of the review on the first day... I'm going to get raped. I'm not going to set myself up for failure.

This pretty much sums up (re)TardenT's life.

He didn't explain. I gave an equivalent response.

Clearly, the only solution to your problems is to slash your wrists.

Me wonders when these guys get banned.

Retake algebra and ace it!
Retake trigonometry and ace it!
Your self-confidence will return.
Then take calculus with your newfound self-confidence.

Studying always involves reviewing previous material. It takes 2-3 exposures to material for it to sink in.

I was always fuzzy on the first day of class. That first week was a review period for me, the second week was catchup from the first week.

School is not easy for anybody. Quit thinking you are worse off than everyone else. Everyone else in your class is just as scared of calculus as you are.

I took algebra, trig, and calculus in high school and took them again at the community college. The refresher allowed me to ace those classes, the second time through. I still went to the math lab and professor for help at least 3 times per week.

You need to focus hard and get that work done each day. Get with some people in class and compare your homework each morning. Being afraid to tell the guys that I was unable to finish my homework last night was a great motivator for me to push through that difficult calculus homework.

You mention six years for a bachelors degree, that is nothing. It took me nine years to get mine.
  • 4 years at a community college for an A.A. and an A.S.
  • 1 year working full time as a research assistant at a national laboratory while taking accounting classes at night for a minor.
  • 4 years at a top 5 engineering school, before I finally received my B.S. in computer science. This included three semesters of academic probation where I went to an easier engineering school and aced the classes there as a way to convince my adviser at the top 5 school that I could finish the program.

It is not easy for anyone! It is hard work!

Regarding exercise, stay away from the gym and do the following each day:
10 pushups
10 situps
20 lunges (for the legs)

When you pick something off the floor, bend your knees and keep your back straight. Use your muscles, feel them as you move. Use your body. Go running to build your heart and lungs. Physical activity takes hard work for everybody, you are not special in the difficulty you experience.

Quit your crying and toughen up. This is your life, live it and stop being afraid of it.

Additionally, it is almost 2am here in Chicago. No telling where you are located but why the hell are you awake right now trolling a discussion forum when there is homework to do? Eat, sleep, and study. Get off the damn internet! Focus yourself.

anyone who has read trident threads will understand that he will be negative no matter what and just prefers sitting in his dark little hole feeling sorry for himself. nothing you tell him will have any impact. he just likes the attention or something, I'm not quite sure.. so don't bother wasting your positive intentions on him.

Computer Science isn't the best career path in this day and age.
India and China are willing to do everything for much cheaper.
The only jobs left to Americans are hardware people (desktop/server admins), and there are only so many of those jobs to go around.

There is always the military. They can find something for you to do.
