I certainly hadn't heard of them before. Let's hope their newly found wad of cash equates to Clear sky being a kick ass game :).

agreed ... it was my GotY for 07

i am quite sure the expansion will run really well unless they decide to tweak it too much

Good stuff.

Clear Sky is a standalone prequel, not an expansion. It also has a new engine that includes a DX10 renderer.

Well it's not a "new engine" per se, it still uses the X-Ray engine, but they modified it to a considerable extent (better models, more overall polygons count, better lightning effects, DX10 support, more parallax mapping, performance improvements, multi-threaded out of the box... and a few others I might forget).

Yikes, 1.65 million people had to put up with all the bugs? That says as much about the tolerance of PC gamers as the quality of the game.

It's buggy, but the game is so good that it is worth putting up with them.

STALKER is a really great game and I'm glad that the game sold well. It was a really original game and I can't wait for Clear Sky.

I don't know that this means much for PC gaming in the West, though. It looks like 900,000 of those 1.65 million sales came from the former Soviet states and only 700,000 copies were sold in the US/West Europe. The reason this game sold so well is probably that it appealed to a different audience.

700k is still a good number

Glad to see a game that mostly deserved to sell well sell well.

As for CoD4....probably would've sold better if the multiplayer maps hadn't all been designed with low-pop servers in mind. When you design a large portion of the game under the console assumptions, it's no ones fault but your own when the PC version doesn't sell as well as the console one.

Glad to see I am not the only one who mixes words like that while writing. And here I was worried of a tumor. :p

i wish i spoke Russian well enough to understand it completely ... a lot of it is lost in translation

"car park" = "junkyard" :p

I think the game would be much more interesting if I was able to understand what all the Stalkers are talking about while crowding around the fire.

It's good that they don't have an English translation though; everyone speaking in Russian really sets the mood and makes the world seem authentic.

I loved this game until cnpp. Then it became a run and gun shooter on rails.
Only other thing I would change is put in English subtitles for Russian speaking stalkers.

No wonder GSC Game World said 'good by' to THQ and are releasing the Clear Sky by themselves. I personally doubted the fact that the game would be very popular due to a different (and more realistic) combat system and the heavy use of Russian language (the jokes the soldiers tell each other are hilarious if you know the meaning or read a translation). I am glad that the game became so popular and people have been reminded of the Chernobyl problem again.

I totally agree and I hope the Clear Sky would remain true to the original in that respect.

I'll try to find the article but I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere (I believe it was at Oblivion-Lost.de's news section concerning the Q&A with the developers about Clear Sky) that the dialog in Clear Sky will be either 1) all in English or 2) will have English (and in other languages) sub-titles to help understand the NPCs and the side-quests, and their jokes, and so on.

I thought the premise seemed really cool, but the game was rather craptacular.

I hope they keep the NPC's speaking Russian in Clear Sky, adds to the atmosphere of the whole place IMO, although I think subtitles would keep alot of people happy.

I love how when the game was first released people came on here saying how the ending sucked when in reality they lost the game and didn't even realize that they lost the game. How often does that happen?

Well the real ending sucked too. Game designers, like film makers have no idea how to end movies these days.

Yeah, the real drawback is the ending... but they mentioned a quite interesting idea about the Earth's noosphere.

Oblivion was great in that sense - you didn't even have to start the main quest and the game was just endless. Statistical leveling is too tedious, though and it is good it was not present in STALKER.

The gameplay design was poor in this fashion.... In order to get the real ending, you have to go through some missions before you get to the certain place. The problem is that ....

SPOILER...

You find out that you're Strelok to late. They need to bring this out before you go visit Chernobyl NPP.
