SPOILER:

That area is hard as hell. I don't know if there was a spawing issue for me, but same exact thing happened. I stormed the fortess after killing the sniper and all 7 guys on my side are dead. I must have killed 50 Mercs there. They kept coming and coming in waves. I had to leave because no one would ever stay dead. They just kept sending waves and waves. And after 5 waves I got sick of it and left. I went back for my reward but the guy from whom I'm supposed to get it, is dead :p so all for nothing. He does have a cool weapon though . Man there are like 5 new weapons there (for me anyway). 2 sniper rifles, silenced sub machine gun, combat shotgun...

How are you guys joining Duty exactly? I've already had missions w/ them, but then when I get back to town (with the bar), I can't get into the Duty headquarters so I feel I've missed something...

*****SPOILER******

i left the bar and found some DUTY guys. I follow them and the leader wants me to help kill a sniper at the Freedom group's base. he says if i help i can take all the supplies i want from the base. I accept and go over and inside the base and talk to the dudes. i have the option to continue the DUTY mission or tell the guys at the Freedom base that DUTY is planning to attack them. I continue with my mission and kill the sniper. the DUTY squad, all 6 or 7 of them attack a fortified base with at least 20 freedom troops in it. they all die within 2 minutes of blowing the wall. at 1st i was just running around watching then decided i wanted some action and started to attack them. found some nice guns but i died. i doubt i could take them all on myself. so much for the supplies.

so what do i do? what did you guys do? is aligning yourself with DUTY or the freedom group the best? i know i can do whatever i want but, you know...lol

will i have problems when i go back to the Bar area if i join the freedom guys?

i *postponed* my decision and went off to finish SQs....

i think Duty Sucks ... and will ultimately align against them ... i am *guessing* this is one of the Big Choices ... so i will put it off and replay it when i run out of other things to do ...

i just walked away from Skull ... i checked and i can walk back up and take the Quest whenever i want ... Duty goes down
[i guess] :p

got some nice weapons from the [dead

I give up, I can't deal with this. I won't pretend to understand why it's happening to me (well, of course it would, the game would just be too enjoyable if it actually worked), but I can't go more than two minutes at this particular point of the game without it crashing... I try to access the inventory, try to save the game, sometimes just move around... CRASH...

*****************SPOILER WARNING AGAIN***************************

OH MY FVCKING GOD!! you guys are not gonna believe me!

I decided to try the DUTY mission to kill the Freedom sniper again. I'm about to kill him when the whole base goes on alert. they all start running to where the DUTY guys breach the wall. So i'm like wtf? all of a sudden i hear an explosion and the wall is breached but there is not DUTY squad there. again, WTF?

anyway, all the dudes are running to the breach area and i have an idea. i wonder if i can stab a few from behind to help my DUTY friends out and even the odd a little bit.

well, here's the unbelievable part: I killed 90% of the Freedom guys in the base with my knife without a single one of the noticing! Some of them were even standing next to each other! they were so focused on the breached wall they didn't notice me! bahahaha!

so then i go kill the sniper at the top of the tower and finish the quest. i go back and they're like we're heading, you do the rest, blah blah blah. I go back and there's a few guys left. now they are attacking me. i ended up dying but i did a quick save half way through my knifing spree so hopefully i can do it again and save again after i'm done so i don't have to do it again. lol

Yeah, I found the knife to be surprisingly effective when I ran out of ammo. I finished the game and I'm trying to backtrack from a save point...

The Gauss Rifle is cool... I hope some good console commands come out in the near future...

Im not sure bro. I could read that as saying: "Make sure you save your saved games before applying the patch, then copy them over after."

But I could read it as, "There were so many jacked up things with our game, we wernt able to patch it without killing all saved positions. So you have to all start over."

So I dunno man, I already beat the game and uninstalled it so.... You guys are on your own. :)

I think I'll try to get past the part of the game I'm at a little more... Maybe I'll get lucky and it WON'T crash for a few minutes, and it'll allow me to save without crashing...

This is a disgrace at this point.

I would just get the patch anyways. Save the save game files, then apply the patch. See if it allows you to copy the save game files back after. Youll have to decide how far you are into the game if its worth starting over. It sounds like you(NYHoustonman) cant currently play anyways so... :p

Ok This is from their release notes.

Saved Games

Please note that Saved games from previous versions will NOT work with the patch.
After installing this patch, please go to "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\STALKER-SHOC\savedgames" and make sure any saves that were created prior to installing the patch are deleted.
You will need to make sure that hidden folders are visible on the view tab of the folder options menu.

A patch huh... just when I was having fun ;) I'll wait and hear if it's worth it or not. Or wait till I beat it.

I'm definitely having more fun now than when I started. Got some decent guns, found some artifacts that aren't entirely useless, and got to the bar.

Just started, maybe played a good 15 minutes. So far, im lovin it. Really like how its setup, and you cant just go around all cowboy like.

Debating on whether i should start over with the patch, or call it good. No problems so far.

Weird thing is, the FPS count in the upper right displays 20-25 constantly, which must be wrong, because its playable without any hiccups.

That's where I'm stuck at now. I killed all the snipers, the dude guarded by the guys with shotguns, and was on my way back out to collect my booty and I got mowed down by some guys hiding behind that big area of boxes and containers. I started it over the second time and all my guys get killed within a minute of breaching the wall.

Despite all the negative things people are saying about this game, I'm really liking it! It's ran trouble free on my "ancient" rig.

If you were to have looked a little futher up in this thread you would have seen a post by me that links to a fix for the Vista crash. I haven't tried out the new patch yet, but the fix I posted works for the initial release. I was able to play for 3 hours on Vista x64 without a single crash.
