is this game still on sale at target?

Edit: I guess today is the last day. I'll be picking it up after work.

To add to your questions with mine. Can other NPC's steal my stuff? Say instead of stashing it, I just drop the stuff on the ground near a dealer, will they just come by and take what they want?

Any way to advance 'time' in the game. I've hit some night times that are really dark and would prefer to wait it out instead of just standing there. Or one mission said it was better to go at night instead of day since there were more guards, of course it was day time when I reached the site. :([/quote]
I saw this on another forum but haven't confirmed it yet:
"the * key is for speeding up time and the / key is for slowing down time .."

Here's the link, along with a WS "fix" for FOV

FOV "fix"

Yes ... i got mine last night ... Target's new sale usually starts Sun ... so ... probably last day of the STALKER 'sale' is tonight

and what is wrong with the FOV in the 14x9 WS choice in the STALKER menu?

There's a quick save option in this game? Can someone enlighten me?

I just made it to "level 2," and here are my initial thoughts:

pros:
Great price point for this game! ($33.99 at Fry's on release day)
Is it worth it? You betchya
Great atmosphere in game (sweet "gritty" graphics and good use of ambient sounds)
So far I feel that the FPS/RPG hybrid style of gameplay works!
full dynamic lighting rocks + the flashlight effect is the best I've seen in a game (it beats the Doom 3 flashlight)

cons:
dialogue is sometimes wacky due to Russian to English translation and detracts from the atmosphere, but this is easily overlooked.
I picked "STALKER" mode, and it's too hard! I die too easily (and I consider myself a very competent multiplayer FPSer). I'm thinking about restarting in NOVICE mode. God only knows how hard vet or master modes would be.
I keep picking up PDAs from corpses, and my PDA lights up indicating a new entry, but when I look in my PDA Diary page, I don't see any new entries... what's up with this?
No quick save? (see above) This really sucks.
the non-silenced pistol and machine gun sounds are too wimpy (the shotgun and silenced weapons sound ok).

After reaching level 2, I've decided to shelve this game in favor of playing Titan Quest (just picked up both the original and expansion pack recently) until they release a patch for STALKER. But I still feel the game is worth playing without a patch if that's the only game you've got at this time.

I'll probably wait for the 1st patch as well to see if they can fix the AI and performance. Unlikely though - it took them 5 years to get it in this shape, and I'm sure they're well aware of all these issues.

The ballistics seem to be causing you guys some problems - try playing Op Flash or ArmA and you'll become more skilled at it. In ArmA most of the firefights take place at 200-400 meters, against enemies that are either prone or running. There are no zero time bullets, they all have different velocities and trajectories, so if an enemy is moving you'll have to lead him.

the aiming is a little tricky, single to 2-3 shot bursts work the best unless they're right in your face.

the undocumented quick save is f6 and f7 is to load but note this only works with profile names without spaces in them so if you have a space in yours, gl cause it won't quickload for you.

also i have not found out how to change your profile name with anything other than a reinstall, any enlightenment on this would be appreciated.

so far i dont think facing off against the AI is too hard. most of the time i find that as long as you take it slowly and save after major firefights, you should be okay.

performance is no problem if your rig meets the recommended
-did you see they suggest Core2Duo or A64 4000x2 with 1.5GB RAM and a 7900GTX? ... pretty 'steep' ... mine is "in there" :)

what AI problems? i sneak up on NPCs and one shotgun blast [or even a silenced pistol shot] in the face drops 'em
:Q

like i imagine in 'real life' ... some of them are pretty drunk anyway ...

READ the "readme" .... it updates much ;)

i found that that using the crosshair and only ffiring when it turns red is pretty good at hitting the enemies. iron sights seem worthless.

as for the PDA entries, i think it just adds stash locations on your map. that seems to be what i noticed.

ok, how do you do the mission to help defend the garbage yard with Bes? holy crap that is hard!

one thing that would be nice would be to allow you to rearrange your inventory and drag more than 1 unit of something to different windows. if you double click on stuff it goes faster but still not quite perfect.

Yeah Apop - I saw that just yesterday andwas shocked. I have the game installed but didnt launch it yet but can you say the level of detail in this game would require such hardware? Seems steep for a game that is compared in most reviews to HL2.

it isn't *at all* like HL2 :p

shadows and lighting are really exceptional

your flashlight really *works* ... better 'n anything so far

UNFORTUNATELY for STALKER, their *artists* aren't as talented as the guys at Valve ...

so "overall" it is sorta equal
[IF you don't really look]

i *expect* when it is patched and texture mods and pack are available it will look even "nicer"
[i you can call 'hell', nice]

it is very gritty ... Ap0calypt0 russkie-style

while on the exterior it might look like HL2, the level of technology used is completely different with the dynamic lighting and all the AI processes going on.

I've read this whole thread. While I'm REALLY interested in playing this game (been reading about it for years!), all the bugs/problems/weird issues are turning me away from purchasing it.

It sounds to me like the game wasn't fully tested before they sent it to market. We all know it sure WASN'T RUSHED!

Sounds like I'll be waiting for the first patch to come out...it'll probably be 200MB+. :p

GAMEPLAY HINTS, TIPS, AND OTHER INFORMATION

?Check your map constantly for clues and locations of other S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s stashes.
?NPCs often have useful information. Don't forget to speak with them.
?Keep an extra weapon on hand in case the durability of your main weapon affects its condition.
?Low crouch will imporve your aim.
?Don't forget to explore the environment for better positions or hidden locations.
?If you are in a hostile area and are approaching a corner, it is wise to lean/peek around the corner before proceeding.
?In multiplayer, remember to spend your money frugally. Money is a limited resource, so budget wisely for longer games.

Ok, it appears to be an NVIDIA/driver issue in XP. When I apply certain AA settings in the driver, it BSOD's. It's running fine now in XP now. Haven't really bothered with Vista again because even during the brief moments that it did work, it didn't preform as well as XP. Yay, dual boot.n :)

Pretty decent game though so far.

I started the game at 1280x1024, medium default settings, and I literally was only moving once every 4 seconds after I left the trader's room.

I turned EAX and shadows off, and now I'm playing at 1280x1024, high settings, with no hiccups.

It seems like every game that I play, shadows are the defining factor between unplayable and smooth.

I didn't play it for a day because I thought it was ugly and buggy, but now that the settings are ok for me, the game is a blast.

Just wondering if anyone's having trouble getting this in Canada (ok, Toronto). Been too lazy to actually go shopping for it, but my preorder still hasn't shipped since Futureshop is and has been out of stock for the whole week. BB isn't doing any better. I've lost faith in EB, so that leaves Compusmart...ugh...

If your willing to make the trip, there's an EB in Whitby that has 35 copies of STALKER. Its on Thickson, across form the mall.

there is a trader in the bar and I found one in the science station. I think all traders have --- for available money so they can buy unlimited from you. I stopped grabbing every gun to much work to take them back to the traders for money. I think with the lower difficulty settings you get more good stuff just by finding it. I think at higher settings you would need to actually buy them if you want them earlier.

wow, 35 copies of one game? or is that a typo? around here, i'd be lucky if an EB had 35 PC games altogether.

Not that desperate:p. Anywho, just hope it comes this week so I can try it out on my new 2407 that should also be coming this week. Otherwise, I'll just suck it up and walk down to the damn mall... Or does someone want to carry me?

Initially I wanted to like this game, and I hard a tough time with it, the open-endedness of it was too much for me. I don't like 100% linear, but free roaming on a FPS? yikes!

now that I've played it a bit more, it's really growing on me, and as the IGN review said (I almost never agree with them...) at first the graphics do seem kind of m3h when you consider how long the game has been in development. But, after playing for awhile, the scale of things and the detail is pretty astonishing. I'll go as far as to say for a game of this size, and by size I mean size of the world you're in, the graphics are very well done. Could they have been better? Of course, but I think for how ambitious this game is they did a fantastic job creating the atmosphere of it. The graphics are pretty damn good!
