Ryse: Son of rome

I don't mind the QTEs because otherwise you get typical hack and slash animations, which are bad. The killing blows are a nice way to make the game actually look better, and rather than just sit and watch, you get to press a button or two.

Now, I want to see more!

i think ryse looks badass myself. if they can fix the framerate stuff i think it will be amazing.

and the "qte"s don't seem any more different than the "qte"s in assassins creed or uncharted. the entire combat isn't consisted of it, it's just certain moments.

and me personally i think it looks awesome. i love the "300" feel to the game. my favorite scene in 300 is the scene that is the side view where he just goes on a rampage, and the speed goes from fast, to slow, to normal, to fast, etc. that is exactly what the combat in ryse reminds me of.

Those were just interactive cinematic events....

Yes, also known as a QTE (quick time event).

I haven't played those games but a QTE was popping up for every single enemy they killed. I understand it was just a pre-recorded demo and the game may look very different on release, but from what they showed it sure looks like QTEs make up about half of the combat.

Very cool setting/theme though.

What was happening was similar to what happens in God of War. When an enemy gets low enough health, you can hit a button to perform a "killing move" that is cinematic. The thing is, I am pretty sure you can skip these altogether and just opt for a normal hack and slash kill.

well usually in god of war and uncharted too not sure bout assassins creed cause been years since i played it) if you don't press the button the enemy lives. and the next time you go to do a normal attack they will die, with the exception of a boss or sub-boss.

Yeah, that is what I meant by being able to skip the kill scenes. They become eligible for them at a certain health level, and generally a normal attack or two will kill them.

That was like everything bad and cliched about Hollywood blockbusters and AAA games bundled into a single short trailer.

Graphics aside, I really didn't see anything from the trailer that would make me want to play it. Maybe I'm old and jaded but looks very generic to me.

It looks like a generic platformer, much like God of War. I happen to like the setting and it looks great, so I am at least intrigued.

I thought the setting looked fine but to me the QTEs seemed excessive. I can understand using them as a way of doing something cool outside of normal game mechanics (boss fight or special event) but when each enemy you kill basically stops the action so you can play a quick game of Parappa the Rapper it's a little too much imo...

I don't mind QTEs for killing blows, but I didn't like how it went into slow motion/bullet time/whatever when they were being done.

this is exactly the same thing that happens in god of war, which is a very successful game. every single enemy you kill in the game has a QTE for a finishing blow. from the lowly peons to the final boss of the game.

i actually do like the slowdown because as i mentioned earlier, it reminds me of some badass scenes in 300. i can definitely see how people wouldn't like it though, and i'm sure it would get pretty old pretty quick.

Heh... So many games nowadays are more like interactive movies
I agree the QTE stuff is getting out of hand, you barely get to play anymore

Who came up with this stuff anyway? Like, what game started it?
The problem is its not even good... If Im watching a cutscene, Id rather watch it without worrying whether something will pop up telling me to press a button, and the whole thing isnt even fun

The first time I remember it being used extensively was Shenume on the Dreamcast. And they even had an arcade minigame to help train you. I must have done that for hours.

It was either this game or God of War that brought QTE to the mainstream:

I don't understand how gameplay (with a controller at least) translates between generations. How does a game play like a 360 game but not an Xbox One game exactly?

Eh, I can see the Kinect influence. But that might get ironed out as the game gets closer to finish. It wasn't slated for a launch title I believe, so they got plenty of time to take out the horrible spear throwing parts. =)

Ugh. QTE. Fucking QTE.

Unless it's SOLELY for kills, sparingly, or less than 5-10% of the gameplay/combat, it can die in a grease fire.

I mean, seriously, it's 2013. This shit is essentially what Sewer Shark on the Sega CD was.

"Quick! Hit left!"

--"Good, you hit left in time! Now hit right!"

"Oh, you didn't hit Right in time, time for a cinematic of you blowing up"

That was what, 1994? That's essentially what QTE devolves to: Give up freedom, give up gameplay, give up playing the game, to have something that "looks cool".

I just fail to see how anyone who has been playing games for more than 5 years can be impressed by this stuff. I get the cinematic immersion factor in a VERY few instances when it fits, but other than that, it needs to go away and go away soon.

How far into the game? To my understanding is has a pretty epic, long intro which is what I was gathering these scenes were from.

However, this makes sense, as CryTek has openly said they are going to be 'exploring' pushing the art of 'cinematic games'. There's actually a version of the Sandbox (editor for CryEngine) called CineBox, which is setup for making movies within CryEngine.

From the looks of it, it is in the God of War style and not forced unless you use a killing blow. You can kill without entering a QTE sequence. Now this might not be true for boss fights.

And QTEs, at least to me, aren't all that bad. They allow for a multitude of animations not available in normal gameplay and the limited controls games suffer from.
