The Associated Press:

TUNOSHNA, Russia (AP) — Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry says at least 43 people have died in the crash of a Russian jet carrying a top ice hockey team.
...

Lokomotiv Yaroslavl is a leading force in Russian hockey and came third in the KHL last year. It's coached by Canadian Brad McCrimmon and includes several international stars in its ranks, such as Stefan Liv of Sweden and Czech Republic players Josef Vaicek and Jan Marek.
Sad sad news. This has been one of the worst hockey off seasons in a long time.

Also Demitra was on that team along with former Red Wing Salie who just had a baby. McCrimmon was an assistant coach last year for the Wings and part of the recent SC winning team. Another Wings prospect was on that team as well. :'(

Wow, I was just talking to a friend last week about how we never see planes carrying whole sports teams crash.

there is actually a movie based on this exact thing happening. was some college football team i believe.

sad story about the hockey team though.

It will be a great day when the last of the communist era made airliners are gone from service. The YAK-42, the plane involved in this incident, does not have the best safety record. On the plus side, the modern Sukhoi airliners appear to be doing quite well.

Apparently it crashed shortly after take-off in sunny skies. I am intrigued to know why.

I think an initial report cited that the plane was over flight weight? Even though it was far below passenger capacity?

This is just shitty, and has been an awful off season for hockey fans.

well if they have all of their gear in addition to luggage i can see why.

Someone accidentally hit the "wings fall off" button.

I was thinking these two things. This is just sad. 🙁

I'm one to take potshots at the soviet system whenever possible, but this is simply tragic. RIP.

Alex Vasyunov was killed on this flight. He was fighting for a roster spot on the Devils for years and finally gave up this summer and signed with the KHL. Unbelieveable. Karl Rachunek was also killed, I watched him play many times. :'(

Considering the plane had been banned from flying to any EU nation due to being drastically below safety standards it could be a number of things.

Didn't know that. Guess I'll wait for the episode of Mayday.
