Seems the Coalition of the Willing lit a fire under Putin's arse.... he gave a speech at 2am local time. Must have been urgent :D

  • Putin proposes direct talks with Ukraine
  • Putin proposes talks on May 15 in Istanbul
  • Putin says talks to seek durable peace
From https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/putin-proposes-direct-talks-with-ukraine-may-15-2025-05-10/

Some of the main players have responded...

Seems Putin's usual playbook may not be relevant anymore since the Ukrainians and the Europeans sees through Putin's tactic. Trump's language is hopeful, but also neutral. There is no added pressure on Ukraine.

"We’ll judge Russia by actions, not words," says State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce.

Ukrainians and Euros aren’t going to negotiate without a ceasefire in place. Putin is just going to try to roll the Ukrainians again with his usual nuts demands. Lot of talk going nowhere so far.

If you are Ukraine what would it take for you to give up the Russian occupied territory? I assume that's the starting point for Putin's negotiations.

I doubt a formal recognition would happen. Recognizing de facto control more likely. Ukraine would want a halt at the LOC, reparations, no limitation on military or armaments, EU membership, and the return or transfer to a 3rd neutral party of the ZNPP.

Interesting - A NATO member spying on Ukraine, for what purpose, exactly?

Hungary is an asset of Russia and is doing the spy work in other countries too. At the end, Hungary will be branded as traitor.

With Hungary being a member of NATO, I'm wondering how this game of playing both sides is an operational advantage, especially where Trump's dirty fingers come into play in all of this. Seems to be a pretty messy convoluted situation where Trump and Orbán are seeing eye to eye as fellow authoritarians and both of these tyrants are adversarial members of NATO.

Weird, though, that despite that, it's in NATO. NATO is looking like a very wobbly organisation - IMO Turkey has always been a facing-different-ways kind of member, and now Hungary, (and probably Slovakia) and even the US itself are looking more than a bit ambiguous as to what side they are on. Makes one wonder to what extent 'intelligence security' is a lost cause with respect to NATO.

Turkey is tired of being treated like a toy. There is a 40 year history of NATO members supporting the Kurdish Terrorists openly or covertly, which caused the death of 45.000 Turkish citizens. No NATO company has been subject to this kind of treatment -please quote me wrong with other examples-. (If you believe that Kurds should have their own nation, including some parts of Turkey, is that the same logic for IRA, ETA and many other local nations/ethnicities in Europe which even took up arms for independence) Turkey applied for a EU membership the same time as Greece, has been kept out the whole time (with excuses or conditions that many new members did not fit in either).

To be honest the West always tried to oust Turkey as "They are not like us, they may be a competitor/ threat in the future so let us keep them weak". This feedback finally cause Turkey to start an independent Foreign Policy which causes "facing-different-ways kind of member". If all promises to Turkey had been kept in the 90'ies 00'ies, Turkey would have been a strong ally of the West, well integrated both economically and politically.

This might be true but i do believe Turkey has no love for Russia.

I see an alliance between Hungary, Slovakia and Serbia in order to break the neighbours and stabilish a way to get access to the sea and also access to Russia.

The issue? The neighbours has a lot to do with them...
- Hungary and Romania are not in good terms since always. So, if Hungary goes in the other side... Romania will use it as excuse to cleanse them.
- Croatia, Slovenia and even North Macedonia are not in good terms with Serbia, specially Croatia since would want to wise Serbia once at all.
- Slovakia and Czech Republic is a more traggic case. If somehow Slovakia sides with Russia, the latter would doubt first, and then traggically would need to defend against them.

Looks like Putin has pulled out of his own meeting in Turkey. Calling it "Political theater".

There may be a Russian delegation of underlings available for a meeting in Turkey just to keep the door of peace seeming open.

Don't be surprised if Turkey sees Zelenski and supports him since Russia is fully poised to help Iran, their enemies.

Hungary is screwed, Slovakia and Serbia are next. Seems that a war might likely spark at the end because of desperation and ask for help to Russia.

Next for what? Serbs want to join the EU. "Fully committed" was the phrase I believe. Seems legit, Vucic keeps talking about it despite continually meeting with Putin.

Not all Serbs wants to join the EU, the issue? a good percentage are pro Russian or Russian descendants.

Probably the most pro Russian country other than Russia, it's true. They're like close cousins. Not a particularly young population either, median age was mid 40s last I looked. But people old enough to remember the glory days of the Cold War are dying off, and the younger people want a European standard of living rather than high unemployment, no rights but plenty of poverty. The invasion of Ukraine put a big dent in Putin's popularity, even in Belgrade. No sanctions, but Serbia condemned the invasion and I'll admit I was surprised they even went that far.

Says murderer.

Vucic understands. It's why he ditched the ultranationalist gig and is the EU promoter in chief now. This process of joining started more than 10 years ago mind you. The pro Russians haven't been able to derail it yet. I just hope the EU doesn't fold on the requirement of real elections, free press, independent judiciary, etc. If Serbs want their country to look more like Germany than Belgorod they have to do the work. I hope for their sake they can.

Yea we dont need another Hungary episode

I'm speaking of EU membership, where a Putin fan's presence is less of a pain in the balls. Let Hungary's broke ass stay in the EU, maybe they will pull up somehow. But they don't belong in NATO, or anything that takes over for it.

It took a while, but finally Hungary is feeling the consequences of it's actions where it hurts. They were really smart at first and attracted a lot of money to rebuild quickly their country and were miles ahead of Romania, but Orban managed to stop all that with their visions of making a "Grand Hungary". Stupid dreams of XIX century. And now all that economic advance is lost and people are really feeling the pinch. Infrastructure decays in time and things that were once great, are not in tip top shape.

I also hope my low iq compatriots are fewer than expected and we manage to keep Romania on a European trajectory.
