It is what it is. My family over there are prepared and won't freeze to death. Everyone is expecting the worst and helping out their neighbors as well as anyone could.

Water is more a concern than electricity. If you can heat up a room even for an hour, you can partially seal it and keep warm through the night. I have been out camping in the ice and snow often enough to know that staying warm enough is not that hard.
Water to drink and for toilets / sanitation is harder. Especially if pipes are freezing.

Lots of countries and aid orgs have been sending generators to Ukraine for awhile now, hundreds at a time. Probably still need more though, in addition to better sources of heat like fuel oil and NG. They might have to burn some wood and coal to supplement but they'll make it. Trees aren't in abundance like in the States or Canada maybe, but they do have their own coal mines.
Use whatever is available, anything goes this winter. It will suck. If things get really bad we get the USAF involved, ship direct. Constant fuel oil and gas deliveries from Poland and Romania shouldn't be too hard to pull off though.

Endless doom and gloom from you. My family is excited about their future away from russias orbit. They have suffered more than you can imagine but their expectations of their future are bright.
That is a grade A war crime. Any soldier caught intentionally not wearing his uniform can legally be summarily executed.
Ukrainian civilian population might have problems.
Ukrainian military? They are already getting NATO goretek gear. It is good stuff.

Who could've known in the first few weeks of Putin's three day war that the Ukrainians would/could have retaken so much of their territory back from his grasp. Thinking about all of the natural resources and strategic land mass that Putin and his cabal of subservient oligarchs salivated over as his war was launched, it makes me feel proud of the Ukrainians and the western allies for denying Putin and his henchmen all of that treasure that he and they thought was so easy to seize.
Reclaiming Crimea seems so farfetched, yet given what Zelenskyy and his people have accomplished so far, there is that glimmer of hope shining away in the distance that seems more and more a possibility that it could happen.

Reaching the Sea of Azov would pretty much condemn Crimea, should the war continue.
The question becomes, can Ukraine push the south?
It is clearly not an easy task and depends on Ukraine grinding the Russians down enough. Progress on the East would help convince me that Russia is ready to cede solid ground instead of the impossible position Kherson City put them in. I believe it would take a LOT of HIMAR shots to soften Russian positions enough. I remain skeptical on if we have armed Ukraine enough for the task ahead.

I'd put a tenner on the purpose of this being to remind Americans/westerners with an exceedingly short attention span exactly why negotiations with Russia don't work. Blab a bit about diplomacy, Russia makes absurd demands, back to business as usual.

This may be super stupid (so right on queue..) BUT, in terms of long play geopolitics, what is Milley's credentials? Is he privy to all the psyops security briefings that the president is? Just thought that the generals partake was more on the kinetic side of things and less on the "grand design" on the chess board.
Maybe he has backchannel comms to rival peers that warns that "stupid" is getting danger close? (stupid being chemical and/or tactical).

Ukraine concentrating their M142/M270 capability and limited (but growing) number of 155/L52 guns to the southern front is going to make life extremely uncomfortable for the Russians.

There is no room for diplomacy until Putin makes some. Even the Germans understand this now.
I don't think the situation is going static when it gets colder like Milley suggests. The Russians are probably hoping for this. When the ground firms up Ukraine is likely to press on with their campaign. Make Russia transfer undersupplied weary troops and equipment to another front as soon as possible to attrit them again but this time in the freezing cold.

Gotta remember that Russia also ordered 100 Armata tanks that were supposed to be delivered by 2020 and new aircraft carriers in 2005 that are still just plans. They’re getting as bad for wunderwaffen as the Nazis were.

There’s no such war crime as not wearing your uniform. Wearing the opposing sides uniform is what sometimes leads to summary execution.
Ditching your uniform to disappear or defect is an ancient gambit and held to not be a war crime. Ditching it to evade capture is generally held to not be a war crime. Ditching it to spy or conduct some kind of operation is questionable, some Germans that did this in the Battle of the Bulge were acquitted later, but some were also summarily executed.
Feigning civilian status to conduct an ambush or whatever tho is a war crime and you very well might get summarily executed or later convicted.
Also goretec is not winter gear, it’s rain gear that breathes. Doesn’t do much in extreme cold because you don’t sweat in that weather. Ukrainian winter is more about heavy insulation.
