He's had to deploy the military to protect the rail system because it keeps getting sabotaged to gum up Russian movements. The domestic situation in Belarus is a lot more unstable than most people realize and sending troops, who would likely mutiny, to Ukraine is increasingly unrealistic.

That's some good news. I've been hoping that would be happening in Russia as well. When the Russian rail system was hacked early on I was hoping they'd stay quiet and send weapons off to remote sidings and scrub numbers, send Walmart crap to the front etc.

I guess it's also good to keep that all state secret, as part of the drag your enemy in and strand them, like they did with the convoy. Seems like if RU had known about the flood weeks ago, they would not have advanced so aggressively, knowing that they would have trouble moving into that area. ....or again is it that they are just that stupid and no one is telling Putin the reality of the situation, so just poor planning all around
It was reported/known weeks ago, got little coverage since then I think since everyone kinda 'knew' the tanks and trucks were stuck taking the roads. Pretty sure they knocked that one out before the actual invasion even started. Released a dam iirc?

Ukrainians opened the gates on the dam from the Dnieper River flooding the Irpin and whole area around Hostomel. The dramatically reduced the corridor for the Russians to advance through.

No, it was reported in the first week, they broke the dams as soon as the invasion started to flood the northern aproaches and make them take the one road south (hence the 40 mile convoy)

I still read a lot of posts and reports at the time about it being mud season. So like, I got the feeling it was generally understood to be after the thaw. "Mud Season" is not the same as...intentionally blasting your own dam for military defense purposes, lol.
Anyway, I see that it was reported, but I think the general sense at the time that it may not be all that effective, because it was just at the thaw, which had seemed to make the difference with that Olympics delay by Putin's boss, Xi.
I wonder if people are now recalling the damn as the chief factor...which certainly makes sense. Or, I just totally missed it and took all the "mud season" comments as literal, heh.

It's both, I think. The thaw brings widespread mud, the dam breach dumps so much water, it guarantees that a) that thaw water won't just evaporate over a few days, or b) won't evaporate enough that future freezes can still seal the ground enough to drive over. If you just turn 100 sq miles into swamp, it don't matter how wintery it gets overnight.
Yep. The last city the Russians “let” the civilians all leave with similar ultimatum was Grozny in Chechnya. As at Mariupol, “safe” corridors were routinely shelled, the entire city was basically leveled by bombs and artillery, a real count of civilians murdered was never verified.

In 1999, Putin ordered the airstrikes and bombing that razed the Chechen capital of Grozny. Could he do it again, in Ukraine?
