You could say the same for their personnel. Lost a lot of experienced folk. The smart guys that have become civilian, probably don't want to get anywhere near the front.

If they were smart enough to retire they were smart enough to immigrate to a better country. I wouldn't be surprised if we've got tons of former Russian officers as intelligence assets providing us with info to help the Ukrainians. I don't think the actual old guard cares for putin much.

Of course. It's easy to get into the sway of it and wish the deaths of Russians but it's not like those kids want to be there. It hit home for us here where I am. We've had people just in a 30 mile radius gone to Ukraine to fight for them in the last few years. There was news of a local guy having gone and dying in action but there's no confirmation on that. Didn't have anyone else here and frankly most of us barely knew the guy.

I briefly considered going myself a few years ago and helping with technical matters but I figured there were much smarter people than me helping the Ukrainians.

Some background info on what that podcast is would be nice.

That may prove extremely valuable next year, or later this year, after Fox's pro-Russia propaganda convinces enough of the voting base that we need to invade Ukraine for WMDs, and for dirt on Joe Biden. Or whatever insanity they make up. Point being, if it is in Russia's interests.... Fox will push it, voters will believe it, and sooner or later Republican creatures in Congress will obey it.

It won't be many more months before Biden needs to skip Congress to support Europe against invasion.
I don't watch fox to preserve my brain health, but are they still pushing a Pro-Russia anti-Ukraine agenda? Before the war there was only one clip I'd seen of this by none other than Tucker Carlson, but I would have thought Fox got the message with the GOP being so open to helping Ukraine out in Congress that they would have dropped their pro-Russian stance.

If Tucker speaks for Fox, and he does, then the US needs to help Russia restore peace to the world by staying out of it. Oh... and maybe telling other nations to play nice. Cause you know, it's bad to bully nations with Nukes. Just give uncle Putty Europe and all will be well. Or something like that.

It's worse than you could imagine. But it is... so far... limited in who is preaching it so overtly. Probably waiting for their poison to sink in deep enough that they could march in Soviet parades and no Republican would bat an eye. Then you'll see how they really feel.

Trying to figure out when “prepared positions” won vs. infantry. Closest I can think of was Okinawa in WW2…and prepared lost, as typical.

Try to think of somewhere where infantry attacked essentially unsupported by any indirect fire, armour or air support.

That's what a Russian conscript army would be essentially trying to do by the time they muster.

"Literally thousands of aircraft overhead continuously supporting the effort"

That would have been good news for the allied infantry, if only it were true.

11,590Number of allied aircraft (hunters, bombers, transport, reconnaissance and glide
9,500Number of allied attack and support aircraft on D-Day
2,218Number of Allied bombers engaged during the night of June 5-6, 1944

I look forward to your rapid relocation of goalposts to try and "prove" the above wasn't true.

This doesn't sound good ....

(Reuters) - Russia’s defence ministry said on Sunday it had destroyed a Ukrainian navy ship near Odesa with a missile strike overnight.

The ministry said its missiles had hit a ‘Project 1241’ corvette, a class of Soviet missile corvettes with a NATO reporting name of Tarantul.

Russia’s air defences also shot down two Ukrainian SU-24 bombers and a Mi-24 helicopter over the Snake island in the Black Sea at night, the ministry said in a statement.

It said a total of four Ukrainian warplanes, four helicopters and an assault boat had been destroyed over the past 24 hours.

Reuters could not independently verify the report and there was no immediate comment from Ukraine.

Possibly Russian May 9th propaganda. Ukraine is having a lot of successes in the Black Sea atm. Two more reports just a few hours old;

And the reason why the Russians are keen to keep Snake Island? Apparently Neptune missiles have a decent range and can hit Sevastopol from Snake Island.

Doesn't matter the MIC will get its money one way or anoter.

Funny how the Pope says something consistent with being anti-war and all of a sudden he has a Steele Dossier on him....

Bla bla bla bla

Bla.

Putin is a war criminal but I have few sympathies for a country whose military would recognize a neoNazi group either.

How many autonomous militias does the US have with god knows WHAT philosophies....
If the US was invaded by a superior force, how fast would you adopt those militias in the war effort?

And besides that, in terms of azov... What Nazis?

So in short, fuck your high horse.

That was Okinawa…direct and indirect artillery fire was useless against the Japanese dug/tunneled into the mountains. Too craggy for much tank access, only solution was infantry. Just infantry “charges”. Little bit of mortar support…and flamethrowers.

For instance, the US assaulted Chocolate Drop Hill 3 times in 5 days only to be repulsed each time. That hill was a 130 ft tall hill guarding entrances to Shuri.

In one six hour period during these assaults, it was hit with over 30,000 land-and-sea based artillery shells. The artillery barrage accomplished almost nothing substantive.

The Allies used planes, artillery…damned near everything in their arsenal and all fairly worthless except for infantry.

The bulk of the air operation occurred the night before the infantry landings--bombing the beach to make cover, dropping paratroopers within German positions, and basically all aircraft was dedicated to protecting those gliders and paratroopers. Not that I was there or anything, but I don't recall a lot of air support during the landings?

This is one crazy ass mother !@##$.

Putin: just like in 1945 victory will be ours
“Today, our soldiers, as their ancestors, are fighting side by side to liberate their native land from the Nazi filth with the confidence that, as in 1945, victory will be ours,” said Putin
“Our sacred duty is to hold back the ideological successors of those who were defeated” in World War II, which Moscow dubs “the great patriotic war,” said Putin, as he urged Russians to “take revenge.”
He also said he wished “all Ukraine’s inhabitants a peaceful and just future”.

You know, cause the ethnic cleansing he brings to 44 36 million people is peaceful and just.
PSA, Ukraine's population is down by about 7-8 million already. Europe has had to absorb a lot of refugees very suddenly.

Interesting way of viewing the front line in the East -- by satellite FIRMS fire map data over 24-hour period. Can clearly see the Russian heavy push is reaching the outskirts of Severodonetsk on the right side, while can see the Ukrainian hard counter-attack is now pushing back close to Izium on the left side of map. With the active front lines roughly outlined by all of the fires. Note have to actually blow something up or set it on fire to get it on the map... that is a very active warfront.
Time lapse of that data for the entire war would be epic.
