HA! the actual quote is even worse than I thought. This has nothing to do with any type of misquote. The actual quote is far worse than "Fight Me or I'll Own the U.S." At least the OPs thread title implies that Rush is fighting for "owning the US." In Rush's actual quote, he implies that he already OWNS the US!!!
The implication above is that Rush is the only thing standing between Obama and "owning" the United States of America.
You don't think that is a little bit pompous? a little bit condescending? delusions of grandeur? on the part of Rush? What do you think GOP party leaders would have to say (under their breath of course) about that comment? do you think THEY have anything to do with being the opposition party?

Here is a great read by a conservative writer/blogger (I don't know who the hell he is to be honest) But I think he nails the issue on the nose. Also, his equating Rush of the 00s to Jesse Jackson of the 80s raised my eyebrows.
But what about the rest of the party? Here?s the duel that Obama and Limbaugh are jointly arranging:
On the one side, the president of the United States: soft-spoken and conciliatory, never angry, always invoking the recession and its victims. Limbaugh, the entertainer, you know one of the "rich" hollywood elites that he and his base despise, is heard aloud as a leader of the conservatives. Key speaker for them at CPAC. John Boehner got out of his tanning booth for this?. Who cares what Boehner says? It's not a official Republican message until Limbaugh approves it. If the GOP is so eager to take the emphasis off of Limbaugh, someone is going to need to state that he is an incendiary entertainer and stand behind their statement. Anyone that dare even criticize him for even his most radical statements will be shamed and have their careers with the republicans ruined. (Hello Micheal Steele)
It seems the Conservatives are searching for their footing from the history of Reagan. They have forgotten about his dotage, his cue cards, his guileless Nancy, his California experience. He was outrageously cruel to students, to the aged, to the educated. He built his politics with fear mongering about communism. He nearly created the cold war with the folks of Orange County, the John Birch Society, Walter Knott, and Richard Nixon.
They are hanging on, looking for a familiar place to stand. They are searching history, they are seeking the old, the former, the John Wayne time. The conservatives crave, desperately, to return to the time of happy parades, when the high school team was the talk of the town, to the time when they felt innocent. It is in the past.
Don't look for President Obama's vision in the past. These times require creativity, innovation, drive, and hope. Look to the philosophers, the thinkers, the visionaries. Trust that our science can improve. Limbaugh, Colter, Palin, are messengers of fear and protest.
These people are actually powerless. There is no way that they can take the country back into this fictional history. Circumstances propel the country into now and the only way we can deal with any of it is to be present. We wondered where Bush's ignorance could take us. Now we know. He brought us right to now, and now is the only place any of us can be. We need to work to stay present and to support those who are willing to lead towards the future, out of the now.
It was Nixon who got the Klan and the religious fanatics to board the Republican bus to nowhere 40 years ago. The upstanding cloth coat Republicans, with their gay friends (and kids) and their staid, respectable churches made a deal with the devil, and let the stinking, drooling, third of the American population onboard the bus in return for broad electoral dominance and low taxes on their - by this point - almost entirely unearned riches. Inheritance and position were freely handed down from one generation of out-of-touch kleptocrats to another, until finally even obvious Ponzi schemes like the dot com and real estate bubbles were embraced, defended and promoted at the highest levels. Bush crowing about his beloved "Ownership Society" before Congress af ew years ago.
I can usually avoid the obscure radio stations that carry the contemptuous, negativity of Limbaugh. If conservatives or others cling to his beliefs, they will sink with him, in his bloated ship. A ship that carries only old false fronts. A fiction from the movies of a pretend yesterday. Impersonator, Limbaugh sells a counterfeit world.
Rush thinks he's the leader of these people now, but when the mob gets hungry and restless they're as likely to skin him alive as sing hosannas. You could make a lot of lard from that tub. It should be interesting to watch the Republicans devour one another. They should rename themselves the Donner Party.

Of come off it PJ, the current crop of republicans is not conservative in anything but name. The idea of a multi trillion dollar bailout was being floated around when Bush was in office, before the election people were already calling for it, and Bush had already stated he would push anything through that stimulated the economy.

And what kind of person goes on radio and/or television BY THEMSELVES and preaches to people? He and Doc Savage and the other mindless preachers of the right wing gospel are megalomaniacs. If you enjoy nuanced conversation, and maybe some intelligent debate, why would you turn on Rush? What you want is either to hear your viewpoint substantiated, or you are wanting political entertainment. As political entertainment it's very weak stuff, IMHO.

I don't see them ignoring him until they feel they've wrung out all the usefullness they expect from the situation. I'm not sure what exactly they're aiming for (diversion? or identifying the Repub party closely with Rush?, or he's just the only convenient conservative-type target ATM).

I've heard his ratings are exploding.
I don't understand why so many of you Dems/libs take him so seriously.
He's just an entertainer.
