My boss pulls me aside today and says that he has been hearing rumors that I am leaving soon.

As much as I wish this was true, it's not. I tell him "I don't know where these rumors are coming from, but it's not true." and he says "ok, thanks for letting me know."

It's not secret that I want to leave, but I'm not sure where these rumors that I am leaving soon are coming from.

There is 1 or 2 people that act friendly around me, but I suspect are talking about me behind my back, etc., but I have no proof.

Would I be out of line asking where/who he heard the rumors from or should I just let it go or let him deal with it? It's not really that big of a deal, but if one or several of my co-workers is talking shit about me or whatever to my boss, I don't like it.

It's your fault for telling anyone you work with that you want to leave. If you work with people then you can guarantee anything you tell anyone is going to be told to others at the workplace. Rumors always get twisted so it's best not to tell anyone anything personal.

As zerocool said, I'd never mention anything about wanting to leave unless I had a new job lined up already.,

Put out something bogus to the people you suspect is spread them. Then you'll know who the source is.

^^^

People don't have anything going in their lives, so to feel important they spread "confidential" news. That gives them some small feeling of power, and they like being "the man" by spreading it around. Stupid fucks....

1. I'm so glad I don't work in an office that has this puerile, pathetic culture of rumour milling to it. People come to work, do their job and enjoy each others' company without the need for childish bullshit like this.

2. Why is it not a secret you want to leave? Do you loathe your job and grumble around the office lugubriously like an angry child? If so, why don't you quit? If I were your boss you would have been fired by now anyway.

FYI you are #1 on the list if the need to let someone go.

Dont ever talk about personal feelings at work. My dad told me something as a kid I will never forget:

"Keep work at work, and home at home, or you will lose both"

Hey Ponti, I would suggest you have another meeting with your boss. Assure him you will not leave and that you like your job. :)

I'm by no means an expert in the workings of the corporate world either but there are a few things I've learned so far through experience:

1) Never put COMPLETE trust in anyone but yourself.
2) Never tell anyone (esp. a co-worker you consider a "friend") something you don't want others or the boss to know.

The bolded bit is so true. I always try to tell people if they say "don't tell this to anyone but..." that they shouldn't tell me but sometimes I won't cause its awkward.

Personally, I can't imagine myself to be bad to others at work - we didn't grow up to spread rumours and sabotage others...live with ethics and hold ya head up high.

The office rumour mill can kill ya...

Hang in there bro.

Remember, the only relationships that really matter at work are the ones between you and your boss and immediate co-workers.

I am pretty much 99% outcast from the "social scene" at my office now, and it really is the ONLY way to go. It's so pathetic, it's like highschool in a lot of ways with the cliques and favouratism. Work is for work!

as a managing director for a fortune 50 company with extensive experiences in labor management, i would fire you on the spot. rumors like this don't just appear out of thin air.

but since im not a director and have no idea what i say half the time, just listen to one of the other posters instead

I'm not sure why I should be fired because I don't want to work there. I come in every day, on time, bust my ass to do my work, and never cause problems. I just don't like the job.

I would quit if I didn't have any bills or could find a new job, but I do have bills and I've been looking for a new job for over a year now.

it happens.

I'm more loyal to some coworkers than others... if I thought that a coworker was going to be quitting soon, I might mention it offhand to my boss just to give him time to start thinking about a replacement.

well, probably not my current boss because he's 4000 miles away and we're not that tight, but I'd have done it for my old boss.
