I tend to agree. I would prefer the new updated console to have it. I have a few Kinect games and apps and I would want to play them on the new console.

People need to voice their support for Kinect if they want it on the new console.
 
I'm interested in getting the xbox one S only for the 4K capabilities. But the wife uses Kinect so I really hope they include a usb adapter or something.

People have already voiced their support, or lack thereof, for Kinect. That's why they unbundled it. I have Kinect and have literally never plugged it in. My apartment doesn't work well with these cameras during the day with a window directly facing my TV.

I see a problem with this move. The late 360 gen and early One gen had some, including me and all of my gaming friends, resist the upgrade to the current gen (some still haven't bought in).

The problem wasn't the console but the games. Some developers have taken to kill our desire to buy from those publishers again, which leaves the marketplace sharply reduced and unjustified of the expense to upgrade.

For instance, when the jerks deliberately screwed over campers in BO3 we all went back to playing BO2--and surprised how many were still playing it. Since we are not going to buy from that publisher ever again any One, One S/Scorpio title for 'One' gen only is mute to us.

What good is a platform if the gaming experienced is ruined by the game publisher?
 
Here is a guestimation :

If microsoft really going to have that much compute units (56 - 60), it might become bottlenecked when it comes to memory accesses with current gddr5(x). The edram will likely be present again and will become either very large in combination with gddr5x, or microsoft might go for hbm2.

I do wonder if it is possible to replace the edram with hbm2. It seems to be, the current maximum theoretic speed for edram from the xbox one is 102 GB/s.
A single hbm2 stack theoretical limit is 256GB/s.

It could also be a machine with just two hbm2 stacks and gddr5(x) and no more edram. Would be like most pc's 8GB of system memory and 8GB of gpu memory.

Given the way this gen of consoles has been, I wasn't amazed at all because it's obvious all 3 console companies had to do something sooner rather than later and Sony and MS definitely don't want Nintendo in the same league either. That would be too much of a threat

The days of 5+yr hardware is gradually phasing out, some people don't even keep their TV's for 5 yrs. That's not to say they are no longer valid or out of date, but I mean that after 2 yrs, most all hardware is out of the spotlight. Back in the day, the NES was still in the spotlight 5 years after release, so was Snes, Gens, PS1,2...but not so much anymore.
 
Phil Spencer just said something kind of cool. Scorpio will run native 4k. If you plug it into a 1080p TV then it will downsample the 4k into 1080p effectively giving you true FSAA. Sounds like a big upgrade even for those without 4k TVs.
 
I think this whole situation is pretty amazing. While I think the XB1 is a decent machine, Microsoft's bad early decisions combined with an amazing PS4 PR campaign meant Microsoft has been struggling every since. They have done much to slow the bleed, but they knew they needed to take drastic measures.

We all sort of expected a hardware revision from both MS and Sony, which would likely buy 2-4 more years. MS said f*ck that, and announced not only the S model but also a full 4k 60fps capable console that is expected as soon as 2017. As icing on the cake, it will be 100% compatible will all XB1 games and peripherals. This is a huge deal because it means gamer won't be so hesitant to buy into current gen knowing that they can take it with them.

I honestly don't think Sony expected this. I bet they weren't preparing to field a new gen until 2018 at the earliest. It remains to be seen if MS will actually pull it off, but if they can do it it this will be huge for them. With keyboard/mouse support coming to XB1, the Xbox brand can quite literally be a windows PC, although the interface will be different.

I think Sony was shooting for 2017 with the neo as well.

Just how much benefit is 4k without better textures to match? Think I'd take 1080p 60fps over 4k 30fps. 30fps is what kills console gaming for me.

I have discussed how lackluster this current gen is in another thread.

Your second paragraph is bonkers wrong on history, though. Last gen was nearly a decade long. And all generations (going back to the NES) before that were approximately 5 years long. There is no history to indicate a gradual phasing out. We have one blip on the history of consoles. Whether it's a trend or not is yet to be determined.

And Project Scorpio is a bit of a different beast, since it will retain full compatibility with the Xbox One suite of games. Consoles are becoming Steamboxes. You get new hardware every few years while your library just grows. You're just replacing the whole box instead of parts.

Probably going to be looking at 4K 30fps like we get now with 1080p on many titles.

Rumors of the neo started before MS. I expect they were working on it first or at the same time but MS wanted to announce theirs officially before Sony because they need the sales and hype more than Sony. The only thing we didn't know was going to be announced was the S. While I understand MS' intent with the S I think it was a mistake to reveal Scorpio at the same conference.

The problem is that all of the games Ms was talking about will be on PC as well leaving very little to no exclusives to lock people into buying an Xbox. They didn't announce a new Halo which is really the only holdout and after halo 5 may not be enough to keep people interested who also have a PC.

I don't even see this as a problem. It sounds like Scorpio will go back to the previous setup, where the hardware doesn't make the companies money. The two previous consoles were pretty strong, relative to PCs of that time. That meant losing money on hardware sales (the PS3 was especially bad on that front), and the software and services made up for it. If this chases people to PC, then it stops MS from taking the hardware losses, instead cutting right to the software profits.

The problem, though, is Xbox LIVE. Microsoft's made a killing on subs to that. They seem to know they can't charge for it on PC, because everyone on PC will hop to Steam, even at the expense of MS exclusives. So, the worry is really that if folks migrate to PC, they lose XBL sales. Would they even THINK of dumping the XBL sub altogether to keep things smooth? With all the invested infrastructure, I don't see that happening. On the other hand, with the DLC price gouging of this generation and last, they might be able to actually afford that move. Renting servers like PCs have always allowed for players could also make that money up, if they wanted to allocate hardware for that.

I wonder how big of a gamble this is for Microsoft. I feel like they are just setting a trap for Sony where they force their hand to burn money and abandon their strong PS4 market share. With both camps abandoned form XBONE and PS4, Microsoft has nothing to lose and will try and beat Sony again, this time without weak console hardware.
 
How the hell is this going to manage 4k gaming when a 1080 can't quite manage it across all titles as it is? Nothing AMD has can match that. Maybe Vega, but that GPU alone would cost more than the Xbox itself.
 
4k gaming at 30fps fixed and medium/lower settings sure it's possible with 6tflops.
I'm much more worried by the CPU cores here than bandwidth or GPU power... if they keep those anemic Jaguar processors they'd better clock them at 3+GHz. Or just take 4 Zens with 8 threads and stop messing with little cores altogether. D:

How do you get that? Sony was working on a refresh first and Sony rules the market currently. Further Sony showed more games including exclusives you cannot get anywhere else including PC. MS is desperate to get market share and it shows.

It seems Sony were the ones that set the trap. There were rumors of an upgraded PS4 long before there was anything about an upgraded Xbox. Microsoft made the first movie so now Sony has time to see what Microsoft is offering and has time to one up them. Microsoft should have never announced their faster console this far in advance.
