*RUMOR* New Xbox will be '5 times more powerful' than PS4 Neo

In other news MS has teased the supposed performance of the new Xbox One chips (Project Scorpio)and I think they are being too optimistic. Their claim of 6teraflops of peak shader throughput and 320GB/s memory bandwidth is more than the coming AMD RX480 GPU and even rivals the 390x in shader throughput.

If they do it great, but I expect the actual numbers to be somewhat lower at launch.

That's because it will be different. I'm guessing it will have the mythical 40+ CU version of the RX480, with GDDR5X (the bandwidth is too low to be HBM). Could potentially be smaller Vega too, since it should be out by then, and it might be going with a larger memory bus. But I'm guessing its just a bit larger version of the RX480 chip paired with GDDR5X.

Because marketing. When these things shipped the Sony crowd was all like "Smaller, cheaper, more powerful".
Now all they got left is powerful. And Microsoft is addressing that in 2017 with an Xbone that is shaping up to be mildly better than Neo.

We really have no idea what either upgraded console is going to be, just rumors.

IMO Microsoft made the wrong move to talk about their upgraded console. They should have waited until Sony made the first move or at least until next year's E3 since it could make people wait to purchase a current Xbone until the faster one comes out.

They are solid-enough tumors that we DO have some "idea"

Rumors floating around that the Xbone S has netted some gains from the die shrink.

Gears of War 4 employs a dynamic resolution system that tweaks the game's rendering resolution in both single-player and multiplayer to maintain its target frame rate in each mode (30 frames per second and 60 fps, respectively). According to Fergusson, the Xbox One S has additional raw GPU and CPU power compared to the Xbox One, and The Coalition's engineers have been able to take advantage of that to reduce the frequency of frame rate or resolution penalties in more demanding sections of the game.

Just caught that the "S" model scraps the Kinect port. I wouldn't want an Xbox without Kinect! So I guess I know my what my choice is not.

Wow, somewhat shocking although sadly not really. I guess it just sucks for those that bought it to have a nail in the coffin for support.

That dynamic resolution thing isn't new and it just means that when it starts to get slow it will drop the resolution.

The only real reason anyone would want the S is because of the UHD capabilities and HDR. Supposedly gears of war and scalebound will both use HDR. Scalebound looks really dumb to me though.

They are going to offer free USB adapters to those who have a Kinect and buy the S model.

Looking at the library of games coming I don't even need my xbox one anymore. All the games can be had on Windows and since I can do cross play with friends I do t need the actual console. It's both a good idea and a bad one for MS to do this IMO. Now I have no reason to keep my xbox and will probably sell it and just go with ps4 from now on. With no new halo game coming any time soon there is really nothing holding me to the system.

He's not saying that the dynamic resolution is new. He's saying that the dynamic resolution in existing and upcoming games allows the higher-performing S model to benefit existing and future games without any model-specific development/fragmentation, which is really damned cool to know.

My Xbox one hasn't been touched except to watch Netflix. Last game I played was quantom break and I haven't finished it yet.

I don't see myself getting the upgraded model either unless the games improve.

I would be interested in the upgraded model next year, but not this slim. I use my Xb1 daily for streaming, and games on occasion... played a bunch of Rocket League this weekend while it was free. Pretty good game that I will pick up at some point.

No wonder they were discounting the old model like crazy these past couple of weeks. They knew it was shit. They knew it was about to be invalidated. They wanted to get it into as many homes as possible right before announcing it pales in comparison to what they're going to be offering now.

The 4K BD support is huge. Let's not forget that the DVD adoption rate became huge because of the PS2. The xbox one S at $299 might do the same thing for 4K BD since it will be the cheapest player in town.

Xbox One S will be $299. I may finally pick one up. I like the size.
Thats how i buy my consoles too, size 🙂

sorry should not give crap i bought the useless console when it was big and cost almost $200 more and included kinetic, which wil have almost zero support from here on..

I really think this gen is a JOKE, selling the hardware not the games, because they have no system sellers. At this point i have used this gen for game playing way less then any other gen in the same time frame. OH look we are better now, we made the console we should have, all you loyal people who bought at release, guess what, subpare game play now, unless you want to pony up twice. All this with MS saying this gen would last longer then last gen, hell they tried a price war months in.. if that doesn't say something nothing does.

let the new one come out with no more new must have games and it will $199 in 6 months with no games.. Nintendo may be the also ran, but they know they can sell even crappy systems with games people want, SONY and MS forgot that.

Lame as MS is right now, SONY playing "me too" is pretty sad too. But i guess even when you are in command to stay there you have to offer what the competition is offering too. I cant wait, people bought this last gen in pretty good amounts, they find can do the APPLE deal, sell new consoles every year we are going to pay for that.

rant off.

Unfortunately it won't do the same for 4k BD as the PS2 did for DVD. People would first need a 4K TV and unfortunately the Xbox One isn't all of a sudden going to come out of no where to become a huge success like the PS2 was. Also physical media purchases have been going down year by year as more people want to stream because it's more convenient. If you want a 4K BD player it will be the best deal in town though. PS2 helped DVD not only because it was the cheapest DVD player around but because of the great games. It was a HUGE success compared to its competition at the time.

So not 5 but 1.5x the performance? Well looks like the situation reversed from last gen 😉

You're confused. This isn't the one rumored to be 5x the performance. They said all along that there would be a smaller/cheaper/cooler version and later (next year) a 5x performance version. That this smaller/cooler/cheaper version also comes with a small performance boost is just a bonus. So far, everything is happening exactly as rumored.

Look at the thread title. 5x more powerful than the PS4 Neo. The current PS4 maxes at 1.84 TFLOPS. At 6 TFLOPS, the new Xbone wouldn't come close to 5x the original PS4, let alone the Neo, which will probably end up being nearly identical in performance.

Did anyone establish that the thread title was referring exclusively to TFLOPS as the performance metric? Sure, they said 5-6 times with 10 TFLOPS and obviously it isn't honing to be that, but I didn't read that as "Neo will be 1/5th the future XBONE's 10 (or 6) TFLOPS."

Now, can anyone link me to the confirmed info about how many TFLOPS the 2017 XBOX ONE revision will have? Not the S model.

Didn't Microsoft themselves say at least 6? I think they're being fairly coy, while still taking the thunder out of the Neo.

That could be due to not having silicon so they might not know what clock speeds they'll actually go with, but know for sure that they'll easily be able to get the 6, while possibly being able to push higher.

I just read 6 Tflops but I don't consider that useful info. The games will be what I consider useful info.
I sense a hype machine in the works that smells like BS.

There is no link for confirmation on any specs. Nothing has been announced, it's all only speculation. Anyone saying how powerful it will be is just citing rumors. I'm betting we won't get specs until early next year or E3 next year since it's not even coming until Holiday 2017
