RollingStone- 100 Greatest Guitarists *huge update*

also missing:
Adrian Belew
James Mankey (of Concrete Blonde)
Chris Whitley

At least 10-20 people on the list are less worthy.

And the person who placed Kurt Cobain above David Gilmour and Richard Thompson deserves the Jimi Hendrex guitar treatment.

This is a friggin' popularity contest, what a joke.
No adrian smith, dave murray, janick gers, steve vai gary hoey, yngwie malmsteen, that rush dude mentioned earlier (don't remember his name).

no kidding, at least one of the Maiden guys should be on there if not all 3
Mmmm....maybe the bassist, but the two guitarists are really pretty vanilla for the most part. I've been a big IM fan since I was a kid, but don't consider them to be guitar gods at all.

Yes, but apparently being a god was not required to be on this list 😉

No, I'm talking about the Fausto-Approved List. They wouldn't be on that one either. Good stuff, but not top-100 in the big picture.

If they weren't specifying a genre (although one could assume with it being Rolling Stone that it would be Rock/Blues oriented) that they'd have included classical/Spanish guitarists (John Williams, Ottmar Liebert, Antonia Banderas) or some Latino guitarists (Cesar Rosas from Los Lobos, Paca Baliardo from Gypsy Kings).

Heck, I'd even take Neil Diamond over a good 25% of that list!

And, leaving Chet Atkins off is completely inexcusable.

STFU...Kurt Cobain created a whole new genre with his guitar and justly deserves to be on the top of the list.

No he didn't. He watered down punk and played stoned off his ass. I have been playing for just over a year and I am 10x better than Kurt ever was. He should not be above Carlos Santana, George Harrison, etc. He sucked so bad Nirvana had to hire Pat Smear to back him up towards the end.

That's what I was pointing out earlier. They had BB King (who isn't really a rock guiatarist but obviously had a big influence on rock with his electric blues.) By that logic they could've included Chet too. I was listening to some of his duet album with Mark Knopfler earlier this morning actually. 😀

If you knew anything about Nirvana's music you would realize that the second guitarist was added because they were incorporating a different sound.

Have you ever even picked up a guitar? Do you realize you can play 90% of Nirvana's stuff with only two fingers on your left hand?

No doubt. It's gotta be good stuff.

<- saw Nirvana at the old Satyricon in Portland back in '89 -- thought they sucked then

Ahem - I know I did, and it is still ridiculous to put Cobain that high on the list. I love Nirvana, and I think Cobain was incredibly talented as a songwriter, but his proficiency as a guitarist was nothing to write home about. Indeed, the genre that he contributed to so heavily was really oriented toward emotion, rather than pure musicianship IMO. The guitar parts on those songs are very simple and often played rather sloppily.
