Maybe...

He is not Tarkin. The white suit means he is a Grand Admiral for the Empire. They are part of an elite section within the Empire called the Imperial Security Bureau. Similar to Hydra like in the Marvel Universe back in the WW2 Cap days. Special Operations group.

Rogue Squadron was an elite pilot group organized by Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles. There's overlap.

How can that be? They get the plans to Leia before Luke even leaves Tatooine.

Yes it's set between ep3 and 4.

If Luke hasn't even left Tatooine yet, he can't have formed Rogue Squadron. Unless this is a precursor to the formal founding later on. Also, Wedge at that time was just another rebel pilot.

Finally, all of the people bitching about the death star... It's going to be more of a back drop than an active threat. This will be a gritty (for star wars) character story, obviously set in multiple locales. It looks absolutely amazing. I cannot wait.

They finally make a spin off from the main series, an opportunity where they can do literally ANYTHING with the universe. They somehow decide to go with a 4th Death Star story line, after just releasing one the year before, itself a missed opportunity to do something new.

Is it a stupid question to ask if Star Wars fans are at all disappointed with these choices?

Why would that even be necessary when they can nail the look of other characters so well like with Mon Mothma?

No idea. Sort of disappointed to be honest. Maybe it's just a small part? Maybe it's even a holographic display so technically it'd be "digital" anyways? I just hope it is not a prominent role or even a longer scene as no matter how good the CGI is, it is going to stick out.

Mon looked great, like she just stepped out of Jedi and just shed some years.

The guy with her also looks like the images I recall from the warship captain I believe he is supposed to be representing even though I forget the name at the moment.

oh yeah can't wait. loving the donnie yen action too!

Yeah, I noticed that too. Hopefully they integrate his skillz well, and it's not just a cameo like those guys from The Raid were in TFA.

Overall, this movie looks potentially much more interesting than TFA was.

Well, you have to understand the scopes of the two movies drastically different. One movie was set to launch several new trilogies while the other is just puree entertainment, money making opportunity.

Our speculation is that it's supposed to be gritty but the trailer is all in your face action so it doesn't look gritty at all. I don't understand how it looks amazing at all from the small footage we've seen.

The person they cast as Mon looks pretty damn close to the original. They did a good job on that.

Forest Whitaker is playing a kidnapped cricket hurler who is eventually killed by his kidnapper; the kidnapper who in turn then meets and develops an amorous relationship with Whitaker's doted-upon surprise tranny girlfriend.

Ah that makes sense. Thank you.

Yeah agreed, I think an Obi-Wan movie with McGregor would be way better than a Boba Fett movie. I feel odd in that I was never obsessed with Boba Fett (AND HOW COOL HE IS) like everyone else seems to be.

I feel the same way about the Fetts. I don't get it...

Which is which?

Which is which?

Rogue is part of at least 3 currently planned star wars "themed" movies that don't advance the main plot line. FA picks up the plot line (over 30 years dormant by now) of the main series and looks to be the first of several planned additional trilogies. So FA had by necessity a lot of foundation building while RO is allowed to go forward as existing in a known time allowing the 'development' process to be much more intrinsic.

Damn that Mon Mothma look alike nailed it!

She does indeed, and it is the same actress who played Mon Mothma in Revenge of the Sith but whose scenes were deleted.

Rumor is that Ben Mendelsohn plays Tarkin and if you google "Tarkin rogue one" and compare him to Peter Cushing, he is a good match too.

Are you talking about the guy in white? I dont think thats him. I thought they were going to digitally add Peter Cushing.

I've heard both - that Ben Mendelsohn plays him but another article said Tarkin would be recreated from archive footage and CGI. I suppose both could be true - maybe Mendelsohn is "enhanced" with CGI or something.

Edit: read the rest of the thread. Yeah, that guy had too much hair to be Tarkin. 🙂. Though regarding the comments about white uniforms being for Grand Admirals, I will say two things: 1) that is no longer canon 2) even if it does carry over to canon, remember that it is canon that Tarkin was an admiral during the Clone Wars and could very well be a Grand Admiral by this time period and before being a Moff. I don't think this is him, though.
