Rodgers to Rodgers hail mary miracle finish

But it is (sadly) a penalty. There have been many calls this season (and prior) where if a defensive lineman comes in to block a pass and hits the QB in the head with his hands/arms (doesn't need to knock him down or anything) it is roughing the passer call.

In this case, in full speed, it looked like Rodgers got clocked in the head. It's non-reviewable and nonnegotiable.

It's your modern day NFL.

There is a discernible difference between a QB as a "defenseless" passer in the pocket and a QB as a runner - Rodgers was the latter. This was simply a blown call by the official(s), who saw the defender's hand near the facemask, the body being jerked down looking like a facemask grab (though it was by the shoulder pad), and Rodgers' head jerking sideways all at the same time. It should not have been a penalty, there was no unsportsmanlike conduct or personal foul, it was just a blown call. It's not reviewable because it is just a non-reviewable penalty.

There was no conspiracy, it wasn't an egregiously bad call, it was simply an optical illusion of sorts that led to an incorrect call. Sucks for the Lions but they weren't going anywhere anyway and maybe it'll help them get a slightly better draft pick.

Lions ALWAYS find a way. They have no killer instinct. You put the game away with points after the first quarter. Kick em when they are down is something they never do. They win some, lose most but it is never over. Window of opportunity is always open for opponent.

you know what else totally altered the game?

the 20-0 lead that the lions lost in the span of about 3 minutes.

but no, let's not talk about that.

Sure, but in this case time had run out and the game was already over, but for the call. The call restarts the game.

Yes, I'm talking about the call, not the game.

I don't care about the Packers or the Lions at all.

He was meaning me, not you. Sooooooooo....

As the rule is written (emphasis mine)

Rule 12, Section 2, Article 14
“No player shall grasp and control, twist, turn, push, or pull the facemask of an opponent in any direction,”

“If a player grasps an opponent’s facemask, he must immediately release it. If he does not immediately release it and controls his opponent, it is a foul.”

The fact that he grazed it isn't in dispute, but he never grasped it, so it shouldn't have been a penalty. If it weren't a QB, or even if it were a bottom-tier QB, it wouldn't have been called.

he went to the trouble of manually typing my name out, so I doubt that. 😀

as to the rest: exactly.

This is why "it was," and "it wasn't" a facemask. it is 100% the proper call in this game, based on the precedence of nearly all identical situations since the rule was established.

1) It was a facemask because the defender grazed it.
2) It would have also been a personal foul for defender's thumb jamming into Rodgers' lower lip/chin. Anytime a defender hits any part of a QBs FACE, it's a personal foul. Rewatch the link above.

Can't confirm, but I read this morning that the two flags that were thrown were thrown by officials that couldn't actually see the front of Rodger's head, and the 3rd official that could didn't throw a flag.

Not quite sure how exactly you can call a facemask penalty without having a clear view of, you know, the facemask.

It's probably for the best anyway ... a win for the Lions at this point in the season is just a waste of good draft position, and it might make it look like Caldwell is actually worth keeping around.

Edit: Here's a better view of the play. He did graze the facemask, but didn't hook it, and it appears Rodgers' head jerked before it was even hit. Good acting job, I guess.

Great video - watch how the helmet twists on his head. "Grazes" or "brushed" seems to make the contact sound a lot softer than it actually was. I don't see how anyone wouldn't call that a facemask penalty in real time.

I don't care about either of the teams but you're obstinately ignorant.

So what point did you disagree with? The defender touched/grazed the facemask, or his thumb slams into Arod's lower lip/chin which is a personal foul. Rodgers knew that he was hit in the face which is why he had that immediate reaction as soon as he got up.

I will agree with you that it was a personal foul (for hitting Arod's face). But faulting the refs for a facemask when the defender's hand actually touched Arod's facemask is being way too nitpicky.

I'm not faulting the refs for anything. I've been saying all along that the facemask call was the correct call.

No idea what you are on about.

The replay shows that, technically, it really wasn't a facemask--certainly not a 15 yard facemask.

And if you apply the actual rule, as Xonim posted, to what actually happened (using slow motion video, so not all that relevant for a call that is never made on review), then it really isn't a facemask, by the letter of the rule. Grazing the facemask or simply letting go immediately, not hooking--is not a facemask penalty. You seem to be quite certain about that not being the case, despite what the rule actually says.

Regardless of any of that, I think most people would agree that it was the correct call based on the 2 seconds of information available to the ref--and I still think it could have easily been called a personal foul whether or not a facemask was invoked. The refs almost always make a facemask call based on player reaction--the head quickly snapping down or to the side, or all the way around in the worst penalties. There's only 3 of them on the field, so it's not like they have the luxury of always being in the right place at the right time to see exactly what happens.

Honestly, when it happened, it did not look like a facemask to me--I didn't see his head snap. I did see him get flung to the ground by his shoulders and instantly thought: LOL DETROIT! When they said facemask, I was like...huh? First replay I saw his head snap, so I thought, OK I missed that. The second close up replay showed that the defender never really grabbed or tugged his facemask. His fingers grazed it, but really grabbed him just under the neck. I don't think Rodgers was trying to sell a call so much as reacting to a hand coming across his face. Sure, there was probably some of that going on and good for him to take advantage, tbh. Either way, you don't fling a QB to the ground like that. Certainly not on that play, at that time of the game. lol.

like or not, Rodgers is highly scrutinized by the refs and he is going to get the benefit of calls. Defenders certainly know that. It doesn't generally bother me that certain players get more benefit towards calls in this way (well, more in terms of their position than the individual), and Rodgers isn't known to bitch and whine on the field--cough. Brady. cough.--so all the more reason for me to not be bothered by what was, really...a non-controversial call.

guys, let's all watch a zoomed in slow motion replay and decide if it was a penalty, because you know, that is exactly how penalties are called in football. they aren't called in real time from where the refs are standing.

some of you morons sound like the people crying about the differences in graphics between ps4 and xbox1 where you have to look at a still picture of both games, zoomed in 10x, just to see a 1 pixel difference in details.

Man if only all football games were slowed down to such speed to get the correct call everytime...sadly the real world is full speed penalty calling.

There should have been no penalty on the play. Not only was it not a facemask but Rodgers wasn't even a QB. he was the 3rd person to touch that ball on that bullshit fleaflicker play. He is strictly a runner and should not be afford any QB protections.

regardless, no penalty. The NFL need to get this officiating right. The absolute worst I have seen in years.

Bullshit call for the Packer. Still Detroit should never had let the pass happen... but it wouldn't have it not for the refs.

Bingo. Can't blame the refs for a loss because it should never hinge on a single play.

Tell that to Duke.

Rodgers is a baby. That's all I have to say, and that has nothing to do with this particular game.
