You said you spent some time in Laos? When was it? I was (recently as last year) in numerous countries in Asia, from developed ones such as Japan, S. Korea, Taiwan, Singapore to developing ones such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and then Australia. Overwhelmingly people over there have positive attitude to US/American people. I did spend more than a few years over there so I do know what I am talking about.
I am heading back over there within a few months, I will ask them folks over there if they could move to a country to visit or live, which one will they pick, Nigeria or US? Hummmm, I wonder which one....
I've been to Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, Philippines extensively backpacking before I was forced to find a job in Singapore after the 2008 financial crisis. When I had time, I went out. I based on my experience have surmised one thing.. they only want 1 thing from us.. our money. When the money stops.. no money no honey and no fun.
It used to be when overseas you really had to be vigilant but now it's more of the same inside the USA. I found that it's far safer overseas that unless I needed to, I absolutely did not advertise the fact I was American. A stolen American Passport is worth more to criminals so they can smuggle people overseas under visa waiver than a person's life.
Also since I didn't flash money around, I was more or less ignored by the gold diggers. I wish I could put a number on how many western men happen to "commit suicide by stabbing themselves or throw themselves out of high rise condos". Common sense suggests they shared the room with hookers/ friends who made them drunk and then relieved them of their belongings or if they were too much trouble, killed them.
Also then there are nationalistic nativist protests:

As the US Embassy put it:
http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/120914securitymessage.html
SECURITY MESSAGE FOR U.S. CITIZENS
Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Release of U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence’s report on the CIA’s Rendition, Detention and Interrogation Program
U.S. citizens in Thailand should be aware that release of declassified versions of the executive summary, findings, and conclusions of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence’s report of the CIA’s Rendition, Detention and Interrogation program could prompt anti-U.S. protests and violence against U.S. interests, including private U.S. citizens. U.S. citizens should pay attention to their surroundings and take appropriate safety precautions, including avoiding demonstrations or confrontational situations.

I don't know about you but they certainly don't look like treating Americans as Kings. That may be different inside bars with bargirls who want your money but the tune changes when you are low on money and then you find out how they really feel about you.
Thankfully I enjoyed South East Asia and had a very good time there. But I didn't see anyone in SEA get beaten up or shot in the face or run over by a truck because they looked like a certain religion. That does happen in Nigeria under Boko Haram's xenophobic vision and it's happening now in the USA with xenophobic Islamophobia.
So the comparison is there.. faint maybe but there.
Also the third world reference is there because the GOP candidates all say our living wage demands are too high. Infact our current wages are too high. I don't know about you but I want a higher minimum wage, not a 3rd world low minimum wage.
