A Michigan store clerk is recovering after being shot in the face and called a "terrorist" by an armed robber who may have perpetrated a hate crime.

An armed robber entered a party store in Grand Rapids, Michigan, early Sunday morning, according to a statement from the Grand Rapids Police Department. The robber pointed a gun at the 34-year-old clerk, who reportedly goes by "Tony," and demanded money.

After Tony handed over a bag of cash, the store manager says, the robber stuck the gun in Tony's mouth and said something to the effect of “I shot people like you overseas in the Middle East." The manager also said the robber called Tony a "terrorist" and a member of ISIS, according to WOOD-TV. Grand Rapids police Sgt. Terry Dixon confirmed the manager's statements to the station.

The clerk fought back and grabbed the gun, according to reports. The gun went off and the bullet went through Tony's cheek, police said.

"We're very proud of how [the clerk] responded in light of this incident. This could've been much, much worse given the apparent intent of the suspect," Dixon told MLive. "If the victim had not fought off the suspect, then this could've been a much more serious incident."

Dixon told WOOD-TV that police are currently treating the case as an armed robbery and a shooting. He said they will need to investigate further to determine if the incident was indeed a hate crime.

The clerk is Punjabi, not Middle Eastern, and is not Muslim, WOOD-TV reports.

“We shouldn’t be targeted for it because we have nothing to do with it. We are just trying to live our normal lives," the store manager told the TV station. "I grew up here and a lot of my Punjabi friends did. Whether we’re Indian or whether we’re (not), it doesn’t matter. You shouldn’t specifically be going for one race."

"We’re not involved in any of it and so it’s just really sad that people are thinking like that,” she added.

Since the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris, there have been at least 71 Islamophobic incidents in North America, several of which have been perpetrated against people of the Sikh faith or people of Indian descent who have been mistaken for Middle Eastern Muslims. All of these acts, of course, are equally inexcusable.

Seriously what is going on?

What can be done to stop things like these?

When you rob people you announce to the world that you are incapable of making it on your own. This is a product of and an admission to self loathing. In order to help the ego of the thief deny his worthlessness, he blames the victim for being the real one who is worthless. Once you confess to being a piece of shit, why not be an even bigger one....

I agree but even more than that.. how ironic of the terrorist to call the store clerk a terrorist?

As I said, it easy to say to yourself the guy deserved to get robbed in you can use your CBD to demonize other people. Naturally, there are those here who will say I demonize demonizers just by identifying them for what they are. But that's because they can't reason and are thus idiots.

I remember a time, when I was a little boy, when everything that had to with "America" was awe inspiring.

We could do anything, we had the greatest cars, we could send a man to the moon, we were top-of-the crop in almost everything!

Now we are creationists, who argue that dinosaurs pooped on Adams lawn, the Earth is 6000 years old, sperm is "life", the "government " is coming for their guns, Obama is a Muslim- maoist- terrorist who wants to kill grandmas with the affordable care act and we have no idea of the difference between Sikhs or Muslims, as they are all "them brown peoples"! We even argue our spelling bee champions and Miss America winners are not Americans.

Sad, really!

Mass media made it possible a race to the bottom by ambulance chasing to draw eyes to advertisements to make money by playing up the competative side of our natures by constantly playing on how worthless we feel. The slow a accumulation of community values made possible by liberal publiceducation and the opportunities of freedom were destroyed by fear of the other and greed.

America had more creationists, more anti-abortionists, and more discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities in the days we had the greatest cars or were sending a man to the moon.

But this is what you get when politicians use terrorist to spin their political agenda of hate and bigotry. America was once a great country where neighbor helped neighbor and live and let live. Now America is becoming a Third World Nation like Nigeria and this nativist sentiment violence is pretty much the exact same as Boko Haram.

When are we going to stop it?

You can find stupid shit on both sides.

But don't let the truth stop you from terrorizing the right with claims of "Islamaphobia".
Well, that was certainly a stupid duhversion attempt. Are we to understand you think two wrongs make a right? Are you so damaged you're incapable of condemning such blatant bigotry, or at least keeping your hateful trap shut and moving to another thread? Seek help. Seriously.

If you follow all the links you will see he has a mental disorder and isn't representative of the Muslim community. Guy went off his meds like you tend to do here.
And the soldier probably has ptsd.

But op would you have you name him a conservative terrorist.

The perp is clearly a crook and a thug and a bigot, but the OP never called him a terrorist or a conservative. It's interesting how you jumped to that conclusion, however.

Where's that excuse when a (mentally ill) white man does it? You rush so fast to vilify white men, Christians, conservatives and 'gun nuts', that you trip all over yourselves, all the while chastising everyone else for doing the same. Pathetic. Your not even aware of your own hypocrisy and bigotry.

That America is still here, it's just now you constantly hear from the extremes, due to the constant news cycle, and the internet. Those people were here before. And the normal people are still here, just not news worthy most of the time.

This man specifically called the victim a terrorist and part of ISIS. LK's example perp didn't declare jihad on the white devil. See the difference here? By the way, I don't rush to vilify white men or any of those other groups. You don't see me on here saying things like "all white conservative Christian men are terrorists" the way you see MANY people claim that all Muslims are terrorists, or hypocrites because they don't follow their terrorist Quran.

Title 22, Chapter 38 of the United States Code (regarding the Department of State) contains a definition of terrorism. It reads:

The term 'terrorism' means premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents.

I agree. The news is maddening these days. Right now they are talking about terrorists on social media. 14 people died in a shooting and our candidates are lubing up the war machine, some are talking about executing families, banning religions, and the news is digging at every terror angle they can construct. When did we get so weak? And I don't mean militarily...

Meanwhile, I talk to my neighbors almost daily. When I walk into local stores I know a lot of people by name. I helped a buddy put in kitchen cabinets over the weekend. We are going to have a low country boil with friends and family this weekend. Terror is no part of my life.

I'm sure Donald Trump's rhetoric had nothing to do with this at all.

Probably had more to do with him being overseas killing the enemy. You need a certain level of hate to do such a thing. He couldn't turn the hate off when he came back to the states.

My great uncle fought the Japanese in WWII, as a result of his experiences over there he hated all Japanese people until the day he died.

Yea, but this would be like .. hating all people from Hawaii because you fought the Japanese in WWII.

well, if a veteran criminal that actually fought brown muslims in the middle east can't tell the difference between a terrorist and a non-violent brown-skinned person, I'd say the GOP's calls to screen muslims at the boarder is on the right track!
