RMA after OCing OK? No, says BFG Tech

For those that think "that's what the warranty is for".

Here's an ethics question for ya

If you overclock a vid card or cpu for benchmarking purpose and then run at stock speeds for the rest of your use, would you be comfortable RMAing if it crapped out on you after a couple months.

In other words would one or two OC attempts ethically prevent you from RMAing if it broke while running at stock.

I'm just curious what you folks think.

Yeah, I don't know what people are thinking. First it's geniuses cracking cores on their 9800 Pros trying to put VGA Silencers on them and now this fine example of human intelligence.

my favorite...

If it works within the preset parameters (370MHz on the core clock and 1000 effective on the ram) then congratulations on haivng a still working. card.

People with common sense will find this hard to believe, but some people are unfortunate enough to be born without common sense. Those that have this attribute will have trouble understanding how this is possible, because they themselves have lived their whole lives up to this point with common sense and have absolutely no clue what it would be like not to have it. I know I will never take the "gift" of common sense for granted ever again. This is the stuff that usually keeps us alive for cryin out loud. ;)

What a dumb@$$. It clearly says all over the documentation that BFG does not warrant overclocking. OMFG, I hope they put his name/e-mail onto an RMA blacklist.

yes, we (atleast most of us) know that OCing will void the warrenty. the only thing more obvious is that people will continue to OC/flash, then call upon the warrenty when need be

Good call. BFG can't warrant that or they'd go bankrupt. I think they should put some kind of internal alarm that notifies them on a chip on the board someplace whereby, after you send it in, if someone took thier card past say 5% of stock they are SOL. Then consumers with real issues would have a trouble free RMA process and prices may lower for the rest of us.

Uh, no. 5% is a fairly common overclock. Try 1%.

What is most amusing is how he posted this at nVNews, apparently mistaking it for Sharky Extreme, and thought everyone would start ranting about the evils of BFG along with him, and every single poster smacks him down.

"Dear BFG: My card is defective. It will not not let me OC it to 425/1390 like Turbo Timmy's over at Sharky Extreme. Please Send me ten new video cards I can try this on until I can beat Turbo Timmy's score at 3dmark. You owe me this, I have bought 2 of your overpriced cards and only RMAd three so far.
Sincerely,
Little Billy

For those with AIM and a reduced sense of right and wrong, his screen name's fastredponycar :p

Feel free to let him know how much he sucks.

What's funny is how stupid this knob really is (FastRedPonyCar). He has GT@420/1.13 written in his sig as well as a high 3dmark03 score; I don't think it's a stretch to assume he overclocked his card to this speed and now his chip is starting to die; his 'safe' o/c speed is getting less and less. And now, of course, he wants a RMA.

What the hell was he thinking? What a moron. Ugh... I really hope he doesn't get anything from BFG.

I wonder if someone is ever going to put an overclocking detector on their card or GPU or CPU? A little watchdog that they could check when you RMA.

I don't think he's having problems at all. Basicly he said he sent them this email just to get a response out of them. I think his orignal email is intentionally BS just yo get a rise out of BFG.

No, he was having "problems" (it wouldn't clock as high as he wanted it to), and has already exchanged the card at BestBuy after BFG politely told him to piss off.

There's another guy over there that bought a GT and right out of the box overclocked it to 450, then kept asking why he was seeing artifacts and purple lines. He then volt modded the poor core (shortening its life even more), but still saw artifacts, so he "backed it down" to 440. Now he only sees "some" artifacts here and there, so the card is "stable". No matter what the other posters tell him, he's convinced that since temps never rise above 72, he's not hurting the card.

On this same topic, this poster feels that:
Both of those people should attempt to "volt-mod" their cards when the cards are plugged in and running.
Furthermore, I suggest we have them play in some electrical outlets.

ha, Wait until we have black boxes on the video cards that record what frquencies they run at so when you go to RMA it they check the information and give you your busted card back.
