My vista ultimate runs flawlessly. I don't get what people's deal is with it.

So does my x64 version. Bashing Vista is so last year.

Are you running it in a domain with group policy? If not, sure enjoy Vista. If so, good luck...

No, I'm running it at home. It takes forever for software to be approved at work. XP was almost 3 when we started using it.

I've had zero problems with vista.
I find 99% of those that do have problems, its their outdated hardware,
especially the MB.
I'd never upgrade vista onto an original xp machine.
Just build a vista friendly machine... You'll be happy you did.

I have had either equal or fewer problems with my new Vista rig than I ever did with XP. The abundance of hate for Vista is ridiculous.

Good. Hardware and software companies now have no excuse for incompatible Vista drivers and software (not like they really did before though).

there are some neat things in vista, but overall, it doesn't feel refined for something that's been in the works for so long (maybe my expectations were just higher for MS). We'll be using XP for at least another 2 years here, so hopefully SP2 will smooth things some.. or better yet, Windows 7 becomes what vista was suppose to be.

Ideally, they'd just pull what Apple did and rewrite it all from scratch, and just virtualize the older OS, and phase people out that way. But given the size and infrastructure in place, I doubt that would fly very well.. or would just take a good decade to phase out.

In other news, Microsoft has recently pledged to keep supporting XP, including the release of security updates, all the way through 2014.

Thats all I needed to know....Somewhere shortly after 2014 I will probably upgrade from XP home lol.

Don't know why there's so much hate on Vista, I'd be using it now if I could (got a free copy through my university's MSDN AA program). The only problem is I have quite a bit of random hardware that isn't compatible with Vista, so I'm just sticking with XP. Most of Vista's "problems" are due to lack of hardware and software support, and that's the developers' fault, not Microsoft's.

Fails to address the bloat, draconian drm, vpn issues (which are still touchy even after the 'fix' issued by microsoft), invasive uac, validation headaches, etc, etc. I still haven't seen a complete and acceptable explanation for the 'phone homes' either.

It is the second worst OS ever released by MS (after ME), in terms of bugs, incompatibilities, and just basic design flaws. It's unfixable without a total redesign which can't happen, so the only reasonable option is to just treat it like ME...it doesn't exist.
I've used both ME and Vista, and comparing the two is laughable. ME was a total piece of shit, I honestly have no idea how it made it out the door, the thing crashed on me all the time. At least Vista works, assuming your hardware is compatible (which, I mentioned before, is out of Microsoft's hands). Vista may not be able to match the level of polish that XP has, but then again, XP is leveraging over half a decade of hotfixes and updates. People seem to forget that when XP first came out, there was a lot of stuff wrong with it, and many people were just as resistant about switching to it from 98 or 2k for a lot of the reasons. Wait until Windows 7 comes out and doesn't live up to expectations, you'll probably love Vista, lol.

Yeah I guess it depends on what you use it for. For mission critical operations it obviously doesn't make sense to run out and buy Vista when XP is more stable and still working fine, just like it didn't make sense to run out and get XP as as soon as it came out to replace 98 or 2k installs. I can understand businesses' hesitation to go with Vista, but I think it's plenty stable for the general public (which, based on my experience, wasn't the case for ME). I definitely wouldn't shell out hundreds for a retail Vista license if my XP rig was working fine and did everything I needed it to, but if I was putting together a new system or buying from an OEM, I'd probably go with Vista.

I still ain't giving them money for Vista. Especially here a work.

I have 4 copies of vista, 2 32 bit, 2 64 bit, and I still ain't puttin it on my computer...not yet anyway. MAYBE the next upgrade.

Sony ACID Pro 6 acts up on Vista. I've seen it not be able to find any VST plugins just because it's Vista. Sony is lazy and hasn't updated ACID Pro to support Vista; while ACID Music Studio 7 is now out, supports Vista, and can find those same VST plugins.
Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 apparently does not work on Vista. I never upgraded to Premiere Pro CS* because of the unnecessary bloat and my extreme hatred for applications that unnecessarily bypass Windows' GUI for their own nasty bloated GUI.

I use Vista on my HTPC because it's solid there and does what it needs to. My desktop and laptop are on XP SP3 and will stay that way until Windows 7 is out. When I'm working with programs that are extremely resource intensive to begin with, I don't want more bloat on the OS end, just as much as I despise the bloat on the program end. Sticking with Premiere Pro 1.5 until Adobe releases a new version that doesn't suck, and I'm sticking with Windows XP until Microsoft releases a version that doesn't suck.

...because you don't upgrade until the OS is 13 years old? It'd be like finally upgrading from Windows 95. I know you're exaggerating, but still.

General consensus: It's not that Vista sucks. It's that what we have now works and Vista works to offer a negative ROI for many.

still haven't blown that whistle I see

I will guarantee that 99% of the people blasting Vista in this thread have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Not a clue

Read up on what all MS did in the back end of Vista and then try to argue that XP is better--- sorry no way. For a business, obviously it is much harder to integrate everything they use right now, but for the average user, there is no reason not to go to Vista (Ubuntu makes a nice second OS too 🙂 )

Man, they gave it to me for free and I gave up on it after a few months (and two OS not found errors)

Due to sucking ass on the part of many developers, it doesn't make any sense for me to use Vista on my laptop or desktop. Even though I only use them for hobby stuff, if I can't have ACID Pro and Premiere Pro work properly then I won't run Vista. Runs awesome on my HTPC though.

Honestly, I feel like many people are not switching to Vista for the same reason people are staying with DVD instead of switching to Bluray.
XP is a great OS. Most people and businesses are satisfied with its performance, and thus they feel no reason to "upgrade" to Vista. Until XP stops satisfying the needs of people, there is no reason to move on to a new product. Thoughts?

For the most part that is the case, Vista has some nice features but for the most part they aren't required.

There is one thing that absolutely mandates an update however, and that's security. Vista finally has a real sudo-style security system, it even sandboxes IE. People bitch and moan about how they got owned because XP is insecure, then they bitch and moan about Vista because it starts enforcing security. It can't be both ways, either there will be security or there will not; there's no such thing as transparent security in this case.

Computers capable of running Vista should be on it, it would be doing the rest of the internet a favor.
