So, Rift again refused to refund the year after less than a month later going free to play, claiming the 'bonuses' justify just being a change like the contract says can happen.

That's crappy customer service.

But I called American Express and surprisingly, they just refunded the charge on the call.

That's pretty amazing service. Apparently they eat the charge. I told them that's not fair to them but they said it's a service they do.

I may just give this game another go. I got turned off by the constant "events" with differing currencies to buy the next trinket that you had to have in order to raid effectively.

While I'm sure that will still be the case, I'll feel less compelled to worry about it if I'm not paying a subscription fee.

That is awesome of American Express to cover that. Really shady of Rift, especially if you just renewed in April. They could at least refund the prorated cost. Be warned though, if American Express does a charge back to Rift, your account is likely to get banned.

Ya, I asked them and they said they actually cover it, pretty amazing. I'd consider the other even with a ban, just in terms of it seeming sleazy for them to do to people.

I haven't really played in over a year and am not sure about playing it again anyway. I like some things, but not others, and my inventory is terribly full.

I've already been doing the use an alt for more storage approach.

You have to make a new account to get this Raptr thing going to get it for free. I'm not gonna do that.

Wrong, unless you plan on not playing at all until it goes f2p. Can't you do "Rift Lite" with your existing account?

I'll give it a try. I know someone who has played it before and I'll just roll a character or two on his server and be like "Hey bro, run me through so and so instance."

i bet you this is all defiance's fault.

they realized that F2P makes money from defiance.
Only they realize defiance is a shitty MMO.

RIFT is so much better then defiance... its like night and day.
RIFT however is so much more mature then defiance so partially has to do with it i guess.
But Defiance is completely barf'd up game play wise, that i bet u trion see's it not lasting, hence why they moving the model over to there main cash cow.

I have 2 lvl60's in rift... rift kept me busy for about a few months...
Defiance only held me for 1 week tops.
After i found out the story on the game has almost 0 impact to the failing TV show.

I think (anybody can correct me) LOTR Online was the first to decide that Pay2Play was not working and went F2Play and was successful, AD&D Online (same company as LOTR Online) followed with success also. After that many still scoffed that it was not the way to go, but as more and more F2Play showed up and kept going it was (and right now is) deemed the only way to launch a MMORPG game. Defiance is just one of a long list of those who have followed suit.. its only "new" kick is the TV show, you mention the "failing" tv show.. last i heard it was the biggest premiere ever for SciFy.. I haven't looked since it premiered, so maybe the viewers have trailed off bigtime? But it was SciFy's biggest show ever.. not sure thats a fail? (i have not played game or watched show so have no comment on quality, if you just mean it fails because its no good, that is different).

You have it mixed up a tiny bit. Turbine (LOTRO/D&DO dev) first put Dungeons & Dragons Online as F2P because it was dead basically. The F2P did so well that even though LOTRO was doing fine they were able to figure out that they could make a lot more money if they went F2P with it as well after the data and what they learned with D&DO

I don't know much about Defiance's show, I have heard the ratings are average but it did get picked up for a second season. SyFy isn't the only calling the shots with that though either. I think it is Universal as well who has a big stake in it. As for the game, I played the beta at 2 different times. The first time I played for around an hour and found the game to be completely average. The second time, while much didn't change I found it to be kind of fun but average still. All the other parts of the game were average as well to mediocre (graphics). If it does go F2P I will play it some but I doubt it will since it is buy to play which is fine, I'd just wait till a sub $20 price depending on when it does get to that price point.

They have some benefits for those prepaid subscribers, there's a list of them online, I was underwhelmed but they're probably reasonable for a heavy player.

Yeah, especially because so many of their subscribers had payed for a lifetime subscription, and so they weren't making any more money for those people. They figured that they could cash in again. Most of the people I knew that had the lifetime subscription just got pissed off about it, and left, though.

I would had been extremely pissed off if I bought a lifetime sub and they pulled that too. I can't blame those people at all.

Being a lifetime subscriber is awesome in LOTRO though. Look up the benefits; I knew people AFTER the f2p conversion buying up lifetime subs on eBay.

I played all weekend!

I bought the original collectors edition @ launch, and played for about 5 months, very casually. I got too busy to justify paying, and stopped completely after that.

I started fresh saturday morning, and leveled through 22. I logged in using my original account, and still had my old toons there. It didn't say anything about being a trial, and just 'let me play'.

My experience was good. Game ran great, server was 'just busy enough', and between the quests, rifts, etc. I was rather entertained. Game seems to be tuned rather well now, and still looks pretty damn good.

My 'f2p' experience was great. I think I'll keep playing for a while.

Anyone look up to see what you'd want to do/acivate in the game prior to it going f2p?

I haven't seen a decent list anywhere. They claim that you'll get to keep everything you already have. I filled up my character slots with alts to make sure I got the bag slots and pre-f2p status on them.

"It’s time to take first step into the game you’ve been waiting for and experience the first 20 levels of RIFT for free."

So can you only get to level 20 without playing, or is that just for prior to June 12th, tomorrow?

Logged in last night, was able to access my >l20 chars, and then created a set of defiant ones on another server. Even was able to log into my account and add the code for the latest expansion and then got the items in the mail. (Which was nice as they now had mailboxes as the new char start area)

Also noticed it looks like they've redone the graphics a bit, looks somewhat smoother and a little better than what I recall.

Yep. I've been playing a lot over the past week. They let me lvl past 20 this weekend so I guess they did a quiet transition before today and today was only the 'official' start date.

It runs great, smooth, no bugs yet. Graphics are nice too.
