Something I would like to point out. The first time I saw Aliens, it was right after watching Predator. I thought Aliens, while a cool story, was really annoying, mainly the marines. These guys are suppose to be badass space marines but they spent the entire movie screaming, yelling, and acting like pussies (Bill Paxton anyone?). I guess coming from watching Predator, where the crew of soldiers lead by Arnold were just badasses--they acted like what special forces soldiers are suppose to act like. Anyway, this aspect of Aliens always bothered me, so I never thought that it was such a great sequel.

That's assuming Scott considers Cameron's Aliens as part of his Alien-Prometheus universe. I thought he was quoted in saying he didn't consider any of the sequels as part of his story. I could be totally wrong.

He said only Alien, not Aliens, that is correct.

That is very true, but it's an example , in my opinion, how direction can really affect a movie. I really did not care about any of the marines if they die or not because they were very annoying. People are complaining about underdeveloped or irrationally behaving characters in Prometheus, I think they just haven't seen Aliens in a very long time. It was a good movie, for its time.

Makes you wonder WTF Ridley Scott was thinking putting this scene in the movie as it was shown (one of many, of course).

Either Mister Scott has lost his edge (ala George Lucas) or he has faithfully let that Lindelof writer monkey loose to run the asylum with his silly high school writing.


Note to Scott and Lindelof:
It's OK to write characters that do stupid shit in a movie, but at least contextualize why they make the dumb decisions they make and stick to character background (even if assumed).

You don't take super intelligent elite astronaut scientists (who've presumably been educated in every scenario ad-infinitum on Earth on how to deal with potential alien life forms for mission success) and have them play around in a manner with a hostile environment menacing looking/acting alien creature that even an 6 year old would have more sense not to do.

Not all movies are neatly tied up at the end. This isn't some new thing taken from "Lost", it's been around for decades. Many leave unanswered questions, sometimes to allow for sequels and sometimes because the writer or director preferred it that way.

Some examples from movies which are personal favorites of mine and generally considered great movies:

Memento
Inception
Moon
Total Recall
Mulholland Dr
Cube
The Matrix (As it stands alone, pre-sequels)
American Psycho
Zodiac

Many don't have sequels, yet leave the ending open-ended and with some questions unanswered. It's intended, and many people apparently enjoy these sorts of movies.

You're comparing Total Recall to Prometheus? (I could pick several of the ones you mentioned but I'll pick TR because it was made to be a Summer popcorn flick)

What scenes or segments of Total Recall aren't connnected by that movies' strong narrative thrust? When does it venture out into left field?

What important sequences of TR are featured and then simply forgotten about the second after they're done?

I haven't seen TR in a few years so I could be not remembering it properly.

...and what about Moon? There were no un-answered questions in Moon as far as I'm concerned.

I think he does consider Aliens to be canon. The viral marketing kept the "Building Better Worlds(tm)" line, introduced in the second movie.
