Saw in IMAX 3D. Definitely worth watching, but the story needed a lot more work. I'll agree that I felt a bit of a let-down due to the weak story. Someone asked if I thought it was worth seeing in IMAX 3D over RealD. I believe it was definitely worth it. It's the first 3D IMAX movie I've watched, and it looked much better than any other 3D movie I've seen.
Something else confuses me: I know that director Ridley Scott was simultaneously-developing both a PG-13 cut and an R-rated cut until the studio approved releasing the R-rated cut. However, they clearly censored an F-bomb by interrupting it with static noise. What the f[kssh]?!
[/edit]
Mandatory assignment:
Get the first Alien on Blu-ray and re-watch it before you watch Prometheus.
[edit]
I re-watched Alien: Director's Cut on Blu-Ray. Then I watched Aliens: Director's Cut on Blu-Ray. Both movies are great in their own ways.
I also re-watched the theatrical trailer for Alien (1979) and noticed more similarities to the Prometheus trailer. I knew the title appears in a similar way, but it also has the same escalating mechanical scream/shriek sound...and it's very effective. It's impressive that, back then, Ridley and crew made something that is still just as effective 33 years later. Also impressive that they had the idea to go back to the old trailer and reference it in this way. Brilliant.
I'm conflicted about recommending that anyone watch the Prometheus trailers. They are amazing, but they all contain what I believe to be MASSIVE spoilers for anyone that watched Alien. I'm also slightly concerned that they seem to have a bit of Avatar style mixed in there (not a fan of James Cameron's Avatar). Still, I think Ridley knows what he's doing. [edit] I was wrong! I was so wrong! [/edit]
If you're going to watch them, I recommend watching these back-to-back:

If you're excited about this movie, I suggest you install / tolerate QuickTime and watch all of the content here:

It's probably the only place to find most of the content in high-quality.

Kick ass deal! You can think of this deal as 1) a free Blu-Ray, or 2) save $10 on your ticket to Prometheus! I hope my friends can get-in on this. Too bad I didn't see this before I purchased my tickets

You got it.
After many posts later in the thread without spoiler tags, it's pointless to continue using them...annoying too.

Ichinisan - As the OP, would you mind putting a "spoilers" warning in the title - and maybe we can just stop using the tag for the rest of the thread? Huge swaths of black text is kinda cool, but a little annoying too. :\
