Flex Seal!

No no no!! You're missing the point here, if fixing leaks was an option OP would not need the buckets in the first place. This is an exercise in theoretical redneck engineering to come up with a bucket-based solution.

Okay, you have your small bucket packed with sponges and Bounty inside a larger bucket also packed with sponges and Bounty and the larger bucket springs a leak. You put a beer bong (everyone already owns one of those I hope) under the leaky bucket and collect the water from that leak into a sump where you have a pump waiting which will pump the water into the front seat of the 1984 Camaro owned by your ex-wifes boyfriend. Easy-peasy.

Maybe he could point a space heater at the bucket, thus causing the water to evaporate at a rate approximately equivalent to how quickly it fills.

OK hotshots, you think you're slick? Answer me this...

A madman has rigged OP's house with explosives. OP must empty out exactly 1 quart of water or his house will explode. He has been given a 2 quart and a 2 gallon bucket, as well as a leaking pipe.

assuming he has a clock, time the amount of time it takes to fill the 2 qt bucket. dump it out, and fill it for half the time.

You forgot the part about walking around in Harlem with a sign that says I hate "N------"

No clock. As I said, OP only has a 2 quart bucket, a 2 gallon bucket, and a leaking pipe.

Fill the bucket halfway? Assuming the 2 quart bucket is shaped like most liquid-containing-objects and is symmetrical, it's very simple to fill halfway. Doesn't require a cylinder, just horizontal symmetry (vertical line split). Examples below.

Well, it was a madman who rigged it all up. I assume he used some weirdly-shaped buckets.

Sounds like some asshat that's just trying too hard to kill people.

I'd do the clock method but count in my head, or count the number of drops.

BTW, this leak is not a constant, in terms of frequency nor volume. It only leaks a random amount of water depending on the water tank's call for heat (causing the relief valve to pop), all of which hinges on the inhabitants' use of hot water.

It wasn't clear whether the madman started this when it was exactly at 2 gallons filled.

Bottom line, this leaking pipe needs to be fixed or we're dead!

its a GD relief valve? thats a 5 to 10 min fix with a part from home depot or lowes or a hardware store.

The way it's rigged on top of the tank, with long soldered pipes out and downward makes it not as easy as simply turning it to remove and replace.

I did buy all the parts, then I returned them seeing hardly any water for 2 days (not worth the effort if no water). And now... the water returns... I will have to grab the parts again.

I have a small drip leak in the basement (relief valve). I put a 2-gallon bucket under it. If I put another smaller 2-qt bucket within that bucket, does it allow me more volume before I have to clear it?

Why don't you just connect a hose to the relief valve, and then run the hose to a drain pipe like the one for your washer. Problem solved!
