I have a National SR-GE10N rice cooker that is similar to the Zojirushi. It makes perfect rice but I use it mostly for seaming food. The digital timer doesn't start the countdown until steam starts coming out so results are consistent every time regardless of the amount of water used.

If you want to spend some money, take a look at this 5 Cup Induction Heating Fuzzy Logic Rice Cooker for a mere $270

We don't have Costco's here. Does either Sam's Club or BJ's have any good sacks of rice to use in a fancy rice cooker if I order one?

Thanks for all the interesting info. 🙂

not all rice cookers are good. the rice turns to crap sooner in some.

i had a small cooker with fuzzy logic (national) and my rice turned into crispy crap way too soon. avoid smaller ones from what i've heard if u're a true rice eater.

if u're not, save ur money & get whatever the heck u want.

hans007 it seems like what you are describing is a pressure cooker. That is what I use to cook rice and it is perfect. It will also make a $3 hunk of cheap beef turn into butter. Bahhh! rice cooker!

Anybody ever try mixing rice types? My roommate told me to try mixing 3 parts Nishiki to 1 part Jasmine and it was actually pretty good! Sorta gets a different texture...

Oh and how long does it take to cook rice in a steamer. It takes me 10 minutes tops for yummy sticky rice and less for more stiff rice.

mmmmm im hungry now...
well my fam uses a national and my mom makes really good rice lol wait let me go check the model and ill tell you guys brb...ermm it doesnt nay all it says is .... "National" my mom said its from hong kong (aunt got it for us) we've been useing it for more than 4 or 5 years now mmmmm it makes GOOD rice.. yummy 🙂 so just get one thats used by asians lol they (we) know how to cook rice!

<< I didn't see you say that you wash your rice before you cook it. This is a must for asians >>

That's the truth...........My mom's Japanese...........wash\rinse rice until water runs clear, avoids powdery taste.....also soak it for about a hour before you cook it.........That's for oriental sticky style anyways.........hehe.........I remember her telling me this many times while I was growing up.....never thought I'd post that on AnandTech.............

BTW:someof my favorite rice sides happa style.........prepared cucumber (kyuri Jiman), prepared seseme seed and sea weed (you sprinkle it on ), this dark purple stuff that I only know by sight , spam, and scambled eggs with soy sauce and ketch-up on top...

now I'm hungry

I've been meaning to buy a rice cooker for a long time. The fuzzy logic ones look awesome. I've been meaning to buy a cheapie but after reading about the fuzzy logic ones... I'm tempted to go for it at sams club with the 5% surcharge for non members.

But I'll probably get the cheaper one unless someone can convince me that fuzzy logic makes it much more worth it.

Heck yeah, zsir! Well, I agreed with you up until the spam and eggs part 🙂 Funny you mention the sprinkle stuff w/ sesame seed/seaweed/etc, I was just at the market and bought two of them today. I am vegan, so I avoid the ones with shaved bonito. (What, fish have to shave?!) And I know the purple stuff too, don't know its name either.

One of my favorite quick meals with a bowl of rice is these curry vegetables in a can by "patak's" i think. Really good, has good flavor and texture you wouldn't expect from a can. I also make soybeans with other vegetables in a chili sauce with rice. When I'm really lazy, I just throw everything in the rice cooker and let it go, then add sauce afterward.

Mmm, I'm hungry again.

Anyway, my Aroma cooker pissed me off today by spattering the counter, so I went ahead with this Zojirushi. Don't forget there's an Amazon $10 off $75 coupon floating around... So $89 shipped.

MisfitsFiend, no you don't have to go to Chinatown to find the types of rice posted here (at least not in CA). You can usually find them in the "oriental food" aisle of your local grocery store. And no, you don't have to make it in rice cooker. If you don't have one and don't want to fork out the $ for one, you can cook it on the stove in a reg pan. Can't help you with the sticky rice.

phreakyzen, I'm still not convinced hans007 is talking about a pressure cooker. I have an old Toshiba rice cooker that you have to put water in the bottom of as well as in the pan with the rice in order to cook it and it's definitely not a pressure cooker.

How long do you guys leave leftover rice in the cooker before it goes bad? I'm assuming the tighter the seal/lid, the longer it can keep? I've never left rice in my cooker. I've seen my friends do it, for days even, and they are sometimes afraid whether or not the rice is still good.

My mom always put leftover rice in the frig so that's the only way I know how to keep rice.

If your rice cooker has the warming feature, I know it will be fine the next day sometimes 2. It does start to dry out alittle though. I usually just put mine in the fridge too. Day old rice = fresh fried rice 🙂

Rice gets a sour smell when it starts to go bad. If your rice smells funny, don't eat it.

Most things will start smelling sour when they go bad! 🙂

Still not too sure why rice needs to be washed. Sounds to me like y'all are mostly eating sticky Jap-style rice. I personally prefer a nice basmati or jasmine long-grain rice.

Rice used to be shipped in talcum powder to keep it dry, and thats really the only reason it was washed. With modern rice rinsing is just throwing away rice water (anybody else drink Horchata?)

Rice we don't eat right away I put in plastic bags in the fridge, then zap in the microwave later. I heat it up with milk and sugar for breakfast, drop a clump in my ramen, or put just about anything you would on a potatoe on it (chili, gravy, etc.).

One major point buying rice, get the biggest bag you can handle, it is WAY cheaper by the pound that way. (look on the bottom shelves).

OK, I want to buy one.
The best price I found is from Yahoo shopping. $130 with free shipping. Anybody found better price than Yahoo? Anybody knows any coupon for the Yahoo shopping?
Thanks.

OK, maybe I am the only white guy here who knows something about rice (I had 3 asian roomates in college, all chinese, one from Hawaii). There is a huge difference between those cheap-a** $20 rice cookers (which will leave your rice soupy or overcook it and burn it) and one of the higher end models.

Zojirushi is widely regarded as one of the best rice cooker brands on the market, anywhere, at any price. It makes perfect rice, even the sticky glucose coated rice like Nishiki. It also keeps the rice steamy and moist for up to 24 hrs.

It is in-correct that you can't have a steam vent on a good rice cooker... the Zojirushi does... also, to those who think that 5 cups is not a lot... that's 5 cups UN-COOKED... go ahead and cook 5 cups of rice and see if you and your entire family can eat it in a single sitting.

couple more quick things...

you can buy Nishiki in the oriental foods section of most grocery stores, at least those in the western part of the US (King Soopers and Safeway out here in Colorado carry it in 1, 5 and 10 lb bags).

those of you who pop instant rice in the microwave or that god-awful bag and boil rice, you don't know what the heck you are missing.

ok...first thing..

Zojirushi is very high end Japanese rice cooker, household stuff...
Tiger is the other brand.
I have a National microchip fuzzy-logic rice cooker, also above $100. If u want cheaper substitutions, get Taiwanese brands.
Sharp is another good brand to go with. American rice cookers are crap.

Second, sorry, but KokuhoRose and Nishiki is also crappy...
if u wanna go Japanese, get TamakiGold rice...yes, it will cost more.

If u are Chinese, well, you can't go wrong with crystal Thai jasmine rice.
