14" monitor

Then I built an AMD Athlon 650 which I later sold.

Then I bought a Dell Dimension 4100 P3/866 which I later sold.

Then I bought a Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop which I sold after I realized I'd never use it.

Then I bought a Dell Dimension 4400/1.6 which I later sold.

Then I bought a vpr Matrix P4/1.6 from BB which I returned to BB.

Bought my wife a Dell Dimension 4300/1.4 which we recently sold.

Then I bought a Dell Dimension 4500/2.0 which I intended to be my main rig for at least 6 months BUT ended up giving it to the wife.

Then I bought a Dell Dimension 4550/2.4 with the FREE 15" LCD (which I sold) and this is currently my main rig for hopefully at least 1 year.

Last but not least I bought a Compaq Presario 1500T laptop loaded for $837 which I am using right now.

Damn.

lol! :D

I bought my first modern computer in 1998; prior to that, I did not know much about them. However, when I was a kid, we had an Apple 2+, and a Mac 128K. That "modern" PC was the following:

Asus P2B-F w/350Mhz PII
Matrox Millenium G200
Viewsonic G790 19" (still using this)
128MB PC100
8GB Maxtor HDD

I had this machine until recently.

notice how everybody's pc from 5 years ago are brand names. I bet in another 10 years. brand name computers will have a very small market compared to self built ones. Espically with newer os, don't even have to install drivers, just plug the cards in and turn it on, everything is such a breeze now.

Don't think so. In fact, I think the trend might be going in reverse. I know plenty of folks who used to only buy mom & pop barebones clones, and now they ONLY buy Dell, HP, etc. Enthusiasts will always build their own (I've been building my own since the early 90s) and case mods/colors added a new dimension to building your own, but the mainstream consumer likes getting a complete system for $699 from Dell.

I didn't have my own computer then, I don't think. If I did, it was my dad's old 166 MHz (I don't think it was a Pentium, might have been Cyrix). I think it had 64MB of memory (don't know what speed) and 1.6 GB hard drive. My dad's machine at the time was a 333 MHz (I think?) Cyrix with like 64 MB memory and about an 8 GB hard drive.

The first rig I got was about 4 and 1/2 years ago it was-

AMD 133
16 MB RAM
600 MB Samsung HD
8X CD ROM
2MB Trident video
Sound Blaster COMPATIBLE ISA Sound card.

NO MODEM:Q
NO Network:Q

Later I added a 56K FLEX modem @ $150
I also got a SB LIVE Value $99
and a Creative labs graphics XTREEM 4MB which died six months later and was replaced by the Stealth (?) 4 MB PCI Video. (rendition Chipset.) I also added a 2.5 GB Maxtor HDD to which I told my wife "I'll never fill this up"

I sold the Mother board CPU, 600 MB HDD and Memory and bought a Pentium 166MMX / MB combo and 32MB of EDO. Later upgraded that to 64MB. My sister is still using that rig.

166MMX
2.5 GB Maxtor drive
64 MB EDO Ram
16X CD (I kept my 8X)
SOme cheap sound card (I kept that)
Diamond stelth II (I think) 4MB Video.
CHEAPO 56K modem.
Linksys 10/100 Net card (she was on my network)
and a 14" monitor that my wifes work was going to toss.;)

My sister also has a packard bell 233 but that 166 is WAY faster;)

My dad still works with a Pentium 266 w/ Windows 98. His PS fan seized up so now whenever I touch the case it burns my hands!

Tyan S1668D Dual Socket 8
(2) Pentium Pro 200 w/ 512KB Cache
Adaptec 2940 UW SCSI controller
2 IBM 4.5GB Ultrastar SCSI drives (they were $800 EACH then!)
512MB ECC EDO RAM (don't even ask what that cost!)
8 MB Matrox Millennium II PCI
Plextor Ultra Plex (32x)
Plextor 4 Plex caddy external (that's a READER not a writer!)
(2) Syquest Syjet 1.5GB removable cart HDD
HP TR4 4/8GB Travan tape drive
AVM Apex ISA Sound Card (Kurweil Synth)
Hitachi SuperScan 803 21" CRT
Windows NT 4.0 Worksatan, Windows 95 dual boot.
Calcomp 12x18 digitizer with 8 button puck.
Logitech Three button mouse.
Altra Felix digitizer.
3COM 3C905TX 10/100 NIC

That was a pretty good system in its day. Both Syquest drives died a long time ago. (1999) I still have the box but with Windows 2000 Server installed. It's a backup RADIUS server.

Cheers!

My wife is still using the old awe 64. I'm still using the floppy. I still have the monitor as a spare. The HDD died. The cdrom is still working. I still have the mobo, video card, and cpu, but am not currently using them.

In late 97?
P200MMX
Asus 430VX mobo
96MB EDO
4GB WD
Diamond Monster Voodoo2 12MB (may have gotten this in early 98, whenever they first came out, it wasn't part if the original build)
SB Awe32
USR 56k
Toshiba 24x
17" Viewsonic
Win95B

Very fast rig at the time. I built it myself and had about $3k invested.
edit: played a lot of Diablo, Carmageddon (ah the memories), and Q2 on this rig.

BTW, to those saying they had P2-400's or Win98SE in 1997, kindly STFU. ;)
