Hmm, details from that era are foggy at best. I don't know when I got my Voodoo2, or my ATI Rage something-or-other, but I will assume that only the modem was upgraded at the time:

CPU: Pentium MMX 120
RAM: 16 MB (dunno type, guessing EDO)
Mobo: Some ASUS Baby AT Socket7 board. I still have some docs for it somewhere
Video: Cirrus Logic PCI (wild guess: 2 MB)
Sound: ESS AudioDrive 1688 ISA (see my FS/FT thread ;))
Modem: USR Sportster 56K ISA (Thankfully, not a winmodem)
Hard Drive: 1.2 GB IDE :)Q)
Optical Drive: 4x IDE CD-ROM (still have it, and it still works!)
Tape Drive: Colorado 1400 (The ~4 GB tapes it took seemed like an unfillable expanse at the time)
Case: Beige yet somewhat badass AT mid-tower
OS: Windows 95 (the fact that it was a year-old upgrade from an already year-old install of Windows 3.11 for Workgroups makes it seem all the more miraculous that it was as stable as it was)

Inwin Full Tower (Had this until I replaced it with a chieftec this summer)
64mb of ram?!? no clue
Voodoo Rush 3D/2D card.

RETRO! What was your Rig 5 years ago?

Pentium 150 non-MMX
16MB RAM
1.6GB HD
1MB PCI VGA (S3 Trio)
ISA ESS soundcard
self assembled
15" Panasonic monitor

Strange, this was a programmable calculator compared to my present rig, that's how much slower it was.

Then I bought a Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop which I sold after I realized I'd never use it.

Then I bought a Dell Dimension 4400/1.6 which I later sold.

Then I bought a vpr Matrix P4/1.6 from BB which I returned to BB.

Bought my wife a Dell Dimension 4300/1.4 which we recently sold.

Then I bought a Dell Dimension 4500/2.0 which I intended to be my main rig for at least 6 months BUT ended up giving it to the wife.

Then I bought a Dell Dimension 4550/2.4 with the FREE 15" LCD (which I sold) and this is currently my main rig for hopefully at least 1 year.

Last but not least I bought a Compaq Presario 1500T laptop loaded for $837 which I am using right now.

Damn.

First off, AWESOME TOPIC IDEA!!!!!!!!!!

Motherboard: Shuttle HOT-603 .... the AMD chipset that isn't advertised on shuttles web site because of pressure(threats) by intel. I had to actually e-mail them to get the link for the online manual for it. All other manuals wer on the web site though in the same spot??? Coincidence???
Processor: Cyrix PR166MX
mem: 64 meg at 66 MHz
3d video card: 3dFX Voodoo card. Forgot who made it, but it was the 6 meg version, not hte 4!!!! YEahhh
2d Video card: a 4 meg Matrox card. Forget which one.
sound: geomot Game Theater 64.
HD: 5.2 gig or so
Cd player: forget who. Had a good seek time athte time though.
keyboard: generic
mouse: mouse systems: scroll with 5 buttons!!! SWEET
Case: Enlight, forget modle

I still have everything here as my current rig with the following upgrades:
128 meg of memmmory, one stick.
another hard drive, 8 gig for a total of about 13 gig.
AMD k6-2 400
video card is now a voodoo 3.
CD burner

That's about it.

Some Asus board ??
a crappy sound and 8 MB video I can't remember...

It was my first rig... I bought a book on building your own and built my own..
No one I knew had any experience with computers at all... so I was kind of on my own... didn't have access to the internet so that book was it...

Phew I've come a long way :)

Probably close to the top of the line CPU
Some kind of Asus Motherboard (only bought Asus back then)
128 meg SDram
18 gig 7200RPM IBM SCSI Drive
Who knows what kind of Video Card
Probably a VooDoo 2
Floppy
Antec Sever Case
Sound Blaster
17" Monitor
Plextor or Toshiba SCSI CD-ROM

I've had dozens of computers since then (or upgrades) so I can't begin to remember exactly what it was that I had 5 years ago. I started building my own computers back in the 386 days and building them for sale around the time the 486 came out. I stopped doing that when it was impossible to make any decent money at it (around 2 years ago) Back then it was a challenge to build a good system but these days a trained Monkey can do it. Hell back then it was a daunting task just to find the drivers.

That would be Nov. 97..

It's either

My very first brand new PC I got during 8th grade:

Pentium 100Mhz (I was jealous of my cousin Casey's 200Mhz Pentium Pro LOL)
8mb EDO RAM (later spent $150~ & upgraded to 64mb.. A true geek upgrades his PC with his birthday money)
2x CDRom
1.2 gb of HDD (I remember Win95 taking up 200mb already)
Some Sierra POS 1mb videocard (ISA)
Some old old PC16 Soundblaster soundcard (Your soundcard works perfectly! -Warcraft 2)
Mitsubishi 15" monitor
28.8K modem

Junior year in high school:

AMD K6-2 333Mhz with 3DNow! (man remember the hype of 3DNow! & Pentium's MMX)
64mb SDRAM (Did I upgrade to 128mb? not sure)
Intergrated Onboard sound/video (sharing 4-8mbs of RAM)
