There is also a lot of interlinked airspace monitoring and probably a number of routes that may cross aerial borders, even if they don't land internationally.

Not so stupid. I once took the train from here to Santa Barbara. I'll look into that cruise. I suppose it would be less strain (and cheaper) than taking a several day drive through CA, another possibility.

It occurs to me that the longer this goes the less likely the FAA will be able to restore normal functioning as controllers simply leave the industry and don't return. Staffing was an issue before this and could be a catastrophe after.

I have to imagine the handful of Dems needed are more likely to surrender.

I don't get why dems are even backing off their initial negotiating point. I suppose the logic is a 1-year extension will bring this issue up again at midterms

Ask those folks to explain how it is that the Dems could have possibly caused the impasse when the Republicans can re-open the government without a single Democratic vote. The Republicans could have simply passed their own bill and prevented the shutdown in the first place. The Democrats have zero leverage here. The Republicans just suck at governing.

Edit: Today's Senate action clearly shows that the Democrats have no power here. The Republicans shot down the Democrats’ proposal without any debate. As the majority party, the Republicans need to put on their big kid underwear and pass a budget.
