He's a Mississippi boy. Correction, Louisiana.

James Michael Johnson (born January 30, 1972) is an American lawyer and politician serving as the 56th speaker of the United States House of Representatives since 2023. A member of the Republican Party, he is in his fifth House term, having represented Louisiana's 4th congressional district since 2017.

Johnson is a graduate of the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University. Before entering politics, he worked as an attorney in private practice and for the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a conservative Christian legal advocacy group. Johnson sat on the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention between 2004 and 2012.
I didn't look it up, I figured the odds would be 50/50, same letters. Hey, that's a line from a Zappa song.

OK, gotta check on this. To end it today they would need to

(1) Fund ACA
(2) Fund Medicaid

SNAP too, I suppose. Then they'd get the Democrats voting yay. Am I right?
I think the only thing the Senate Dems have been holding out for is #1. Medicaid is designed to drop people by introducing new paperwork requirements that will cause millions to wash out of the program despite being eligible otherwise. #3 should happen once the budget or a CR is approved.

That's the preferred avenue to reopening. The other avenue is that the Republicans could, you know, just pass their own bill and reopen the government. There was never any reason to shut it down. The Republicans could have gotten everything they claim to want without shutting it down in the first place by simply voting for their own bill.

Doesn't the Senate have to pass any funding bill by 60%? So, need ~7 Democratic votes?

The GOP controls the Senate which also means they control the Senate rules. They could changes the rules to eliminate the fili-buster but they don't want to do this because they know they will not always be in power.
Which doesn’t make sense to me. After 51 vote to remove the filibuster and 51 vote for the “clean” CR is there a reason 51 can’t vote to require the filibuster again?

Technically yes however all but assures the Democrats instantly smoke the filibuster next time they are in the majority.
I still struggle with that logic. If Schumer is still in charge of the dems in the senate and listening to his imaginary friends (John Oliver link ) then no way he removes the filibuster.

Otherwise it’s about a 100% chance the next Dem senate will nuke it wherever it needs to be nuked regardless of this “excuse”.

Filibuster relief for me but not for thee is simply not a tenable argument I think. Anyway I'm not even sure Schumer runs again in 28.

I don’t think that’s the case. Republicans turning it off for themselves and then right back on when they lose is brazen enough even Schumer is unlikely to put up with it.

Evidently filibuster now you see it now you don't simply means it vanishes completely. Trump's post is just another of his every accusation is a confession hyperbole on steroids.

I'm trying to figure out why Mike Johnson decided to become the face of the Republican shutdown. The ball has been in John Thune's court for over a month now. My only speculation is that Mikey wants to primary Vance in 2028 and any publicity is good publicity. Either that or he's afraid Thune would fold if public anger over the Republican shutdown were directed against him.
It's the Epstein files. He doesn't want to swear in the Arizona rep. I saw a reaction video on youtube(shprt) where some guy said he'd release Grinder profile and IP address if Johnson didn't bring back the reps by yesterday. Haven't come across anything yet.
